Walking down from the summit of Mt Hotham on a day, I’d been watching this break in the cloud open and close as it moved across the horizon, some what a chance image. It existed for maybe 20 or 30 seconds before closing up again.

Taken some years after the major fires through the victorian alps in 2003 dead and decaying snowgums like this can still be seen in all directions from the tops of most peaks. The fire burned so hot that in many areas these slow growing gums have not started to recover at all. I had a an image in mind like this before I went up to the Hight Country on this trip with a big storm and the white gums, I got my wish! A simple, yet magical astronomical phenomina. When there is a very thin crecent moon, the earth reflecets enough light to illuminate the dark part of the moon just a little. This earth shine makes the grey disc of the moon visible along size the sliver of light. Add a deep purple sky and a bit of prom ridge line and I reckon you have a pretty amazing sight.
