Lil Formers is a parody comic strip created, written, drawn, inked and coloured by me, Matt Moylan. It started off poking fun at all aspects of Hasbro’s Transformers mega-property (hence the ‘Formers’ in the title). Strips #1 to 100 are all TF-centric, but now with Strip #101 onward, I’m expanding the scope of things to cover all geeky, pop culture properties. The Lil Formers web comic can be found at http://www.lilformers.com

Rhiannon is a Welsh goddess known by many names and in many manifestations, associated with light, summer, warmth, abundance, white horses, and birds to name a few. She has many faces and turns up again and again in the great mythic cycles for she is the primal force of nature and life itself. One of her better known manifestations left the realm of Fairie and her marriage celebration with a god in order to elope and wed a mortal. For this she was banished from the fairie dimension, lost immortality, and most of her powers. Still, Rhiannon maintained some relationships with the Fae,small birds, and wild creatures. If you’ve read the Mabinogion, you know she kept herself focused and centered during the many dark years that followed, never abandoning hope. The shadows in the painting are included because as we live, we acquire knowledge of what dwells within those shadows. Like the fairies, shadows may appear to be one thing and later prove quite another. Passing through dark forests in life sometimes leaves us bitter or unteathered spiritually, we might feel aimless, frustrated, or angry. Holding sacred the inner heart light enables us to take both the bitter and sweet of our existance and expand inner vision by seeing beyond our immidiate needs and sensations. Life can and will still hurt, very much so at times, but rather than destroy us the experience can prove transformative. The white dove is sacred in many spiritual traditions, and is included because she’s also associated with Rhiannon (and Aphrodite). Behind it burns the inner fire of Rhiannon’s being. The symbolism of this piece is quite rich, and in further researches I found out that I ended up making relations between all the representations without consciously being aware of it. The Chemistry is about inner alchemy and how the power of transformation manifests itself through Will. That’s basically my version of the ancient illustrations on alchemy in which we see a dragon-serpent “wrapping” a maiden. In my version, for artistical reasons, I decided not to draw the serpent involving the maiden’s body, but putting her closer to the background, and showing her body changing according to the colors of the environment – which are the colors of the four elements. The serpent is a representation of the unconscious forces of Will. The maiden raises from a pond (the beginning of all things, regeneration, new birth) that has been formerly muddy and still (the dark green color at the edges), and now is made clear by the power of fire (strength, courage, will, passion), or the dragon. A bunch of monarch butterflies come out the pond. The butterfly is one of the symbols of the Gemini sign (Mercury) and the classical representation of regeneration and rebirth. The maiden’s hair turns first into green grass from which 3 lotus flowers (another symbol of rebirth) arise, and then into fire. The dragon’s head show itself among the profusion of hair. The four elements are clearly present, in images and colors: Fire (dragon’s head, the top of the picture, the color red), Earth (grass and leaves, the color green), Air (butterflies, the color yellow) and Water (the pond, the color blue). It’s part of our journey as human beings to face muddy waters throughout our life. But to remain stagnant in them is our choice. We all have the inner strength to being born again, to rebuild ourselves – we just need to accept the changes and look toward the future. We are the alchemists. colored pencil on bristol board / 17×8.5

This painting represents the transformation of the goddess Boann into the River Boyne. Boann’s husband was Nechtan, who was keeper of the sacred well Segais (the Well of Wisdom). Around the well grew nine magical hazel trees, from which grew magical crimson hazelnuts. The nuts fell into the well feeding the five colorful salmon that lived inside the well. Each salmon represented wisdom obtained through the five senses and had distinctive crimson spots on their bellies from eating the hazelnuts. All, but Nectan and his assistants, were forbidden to approach the well. This restriction irked Boann, and she decided one day to approach the well. To spite her husband, whom she believed greedily coveted the well, Boann approached the well counter clockwise. But what she didn’t know is that the well itself had specific conditions in which one could gaze into it. One must approach clockwise three times before looking straight and steadily into the well or one’s eyes would burst from the power of the wisdom contained within. Boann peered cautiously into the well, which caused the water to rise angrily and it took one of her eyes. Because she approached the well counter clockwise, she had further angered the waters and so the well erupted with a torrent. Boann fled from the rushing waters losing an arm and a leg before the angry waters reached the sea, leaving behind a 70 mile long river, now called the Boyne River. Having lost one eye, one arm, and one leg, Boann was transformed. She existed from that point on somewhere half in and half out of the physical world. She became the soul of the river, but also something much more powerful. For when she released the waters of Segais, she freed the salmon of knowledge into the world. Now humans had access to the wisdom reserved only for the gods. Anyone who ate the flesh of the salmon, instantly possessed the knowledge they contained. Boann then became the patron goddess of poetic and spiritual inspiration. Her influence bridges the gap in the wisdom of mind to allow the feminine nature in each of us to stream into our being. Her sacrifice represents the transformation of the self that is required for wisdom to enter. Her essence is present in all rivers. To call upon her, one must simply invoke her name while sitting next to a river and listen with a clear mind and an open soul. Her gift of wisdom will transform you. Oil Pastel and Acrylic on old wood with slight digital enhancements Ophelia, puzzled by the radical transformation that had taken place overnight to this butterfly friend of hers, thought to herself, “She was in a white thread-like casing yesterday, how did all that happen so fast? There must be something magical about that case!” This is inspired by a book Hope For The Flowers by Trina Paulus. This is a cute and yet thought provoking story about two caterpillars who because they mistake the meaning of their urge to get high, get entangled climbing a horrible “caterpillar pillar”. And for two caterpillars, we all know, surrendering to the cocoon is the only way to finally fly. Hope For the Flowers is a book that celebrates HOPE. My fave lines from the book is “How does one become a butterfly?” She asked pensively. “You must want to fly so much that you are willing to give up being a caterpillar.” We are all meant to be as beautiful and free like the butterflies, that’s our destiny…as we free ourselves to be who we really are…and together with our innate talents,we bring hope to the world around us, bringing change inevitably around us :D / You can view and buy my other “Metamorphosis” creations from my Zazzle Gallery:
