Taken on the trail to “The Basin” on Friday October 3/08. Nikon D40, Nikkor 18-55mm lens. / The Basin is a naturally occuring granite bowl in the White Mountains range and is part of the Franconia Notch State Park, located in the heart of the popular White Mountain National Forest, New Hampshire USA / On this trail are cascades and waterfalls leading to The Basin, which is believed to have been eroded 15,000 years ago while the North American ice sheet was melting. The Basin has been smoothed by small stones and sand, whirled around by the Pemigewasset River. / I didn’t make it as far as The Basin this time (have been there in the past), because I was caught by surprise in an unexpected downpour. I quickly shoved my camera into the case and wrapped my sweater around it. Then looked for my friend Wanda who was nowhere to be found. She had made it all the way to The Basin ahead of me. I was lucky to find cover under the roof of an outhouse at the beginning of the trail. It rained and hailed for about 20 minutes. When my friend Wanda made it back, she was soaking wet. This is one of two shots I managed to get. ! A hike through Watkins Glen State Park in New York was interrupted by a quick moving thunderstorm. The temporary additional waterfall (known as “Rainbow Falls”) along the trail caught my eye within this magically majestic scene. This photograph was captured with a Canon EF 17-40mm f/4L lens on a Canon EOS DSLR body. The aperture was f/22, shutter speed 1.5 sec at 40mm focal length. The camera & Lens were mounted on a Manfrotto tripod with a Manfrotto “joystick” ball head. A remote shutter release was used to minimize movement. The image was cropped for width to accommodate printing as an 8 X 10 aspect ratio print. Some contrast correction was applied. #1 Winner “Pretty Park Pathway’s” Challenge in “All Parks” Featured in: “All parks” “Stream Crossings” © 2009 Gene Walls All copyright and reproduction rights are retained by the artist. Went up to Lancelin yesterday to test out my new 5D Mark II . Got up there fairly early in the afternoon as we though we would have to try and find a location to set up . When we arrived it was blowing a gale and sand got every where , must have brough back half the dunes with me . Still stuck it out though and took a fair few shots . Later on the at night we though we would try some star trails as the wind had died off . Got a few shots would have liked to stay longer but we were worried about finding our way out the sand dunes at night in the 4wd and not getting bogged . / Have to say i love the 5D MKII . http://kirkhille.wordpress.com/ Various images of mine are for sale on various finishes and sizes from Gloss and lustre, Metallic and Fuji Flex prints. Believe it or not, this is not a “fantasy” image, created in a computer. This is a real photograph of a very real place! This is Rainbow Falls, in Watkins Glen State Park, located in upstate New York at the lower end of Seneca Lake. It is one of the most unbelievable places I have ever seen! I thank God and NY State for this most beautiful place on earth! Lush green ground vegetation and beautiful trees punctuate the enormous rock cliffs and the numerous waterfalls. The sound of flowing water is like natures music that accompanies you throughout your hike in the gorge. This photograph was captured with a Canon EF 17-40mm f/4L lens on a Canon EOS 10D DSLR body. The aperture was f/4, shutter speed 1/15th sec at 40mm focal length. The camera & Lens were mounted on a Manfrotto tripod with a Manfrotto “joystick” ball head. A remote shutter release was used to minimize movement. No flash. Your comments are always welcome! Looking north up the length of Jordan Pond…the twin peaks (yes, they look like…) in the center are ‘The Bubbles’...the mountain to the left in frame is Penobscot Mountain…the mountain to the right in frame is Pemetic Mountain…a cold, and very windy day, this pond is very protected; it is usually very calm…one of the most popular places, on one of the busiest weekends of the year for tourists, but I could still get shots without people…nice place! / This area is easily accessible, with carriage roads, a great walking path around the lake, a natural amphitheater, and an excellent (and usually crowded) restaurant… Jordan Pond, Acadia National Park, Mt.
