a few days ago, i was asked by a client of mine, (without seeing them) whether i did Geishas, or just “girls in kimonos?” (ouch!) i knew what he was getting at…. I’m not implying that my artworks are traditional Geishas (the word geisha is made up of two – Gei = art and Sha = expert) / – i know that there’s a lot to pay attention to when drawing traditional geishas, such as the colour of the colar (show that stage they are at in their training) and the kanzashi in their hair, etc, etc not tying to offend anyone, nor create a stir, but just endulging in the art, with a culture i’m interested in/drawn to. if anyone knows of a slip up in my kanji, please let me know :) would love to hear about it. i actually think that they’re very far from the traditional, and more on the risqué side of things, what with their wild hair, visable tattoos, cleavage, drug references and clothes hanging off…. “some” might say they’re all representations of my id, while “others” just call them chicks in kimonos! ;)

  • Am I an Artist??
    by Heidi Garner

Hello friends, / I am feeling somewhat frustrated at the moment, it could be the pending full moon, or maybe not….

Hello friends, / I am feeling somewhat frustrated at the moment, it could be the pending full moon, or maybe not. I seem to be questioning my art, my style, as I am entering more exhibitions and finding no sales and no prizes. It is all contemporary, abstract, conceptual etc that wins. No traditional realist stuff. Even the traditional shows are now ‘broadening their horizons’ to include non traditional. Why? There are already so many contemporary exclusive or preferred shows with abstracts and the like. / I find myself asking ‘am I a true artist or is what I do no more than a ‘job’ I enjoy.’? I understand the diversity of art and I appreciate and enjoy many styles. But sometimes I just can’t understand what sells and wins. These days the art that does sell and win needs a brochure to explain what it is and what it means. Sooo, I am seriously asking myself ‘WHAT IS ART’?? I am not educated in art. (maybe thats the problem) I don’t know who is who in art. Therefore, apparently, I can hardly call myself a professional artist. / I just love to draw and paint. I love colour and using it in and on many mediums. I love to see beauty in all that is around me and reproduce that (coz that is essentially what I do most of the time….copy) / Is realist art going out of style? Old fashioned? Will it even be classed as ‘art’ in the future? Just my 2 cents worth. Your opinions are welcome :)

  • The Unveiling of Coy Kiss
    by Carrie Glenn

I am proud to unveil my new painting titled Coy Kiss / I have been working on this over the last several months and have finally finished it as of last night. There are many layers and texture. This painting literally changes and comes alive in different lighting. I used acrylic and some other mediums to slow the drying process. After it was done I finished the water in my painting with gloss varnish in certain areas to achieve water highlights…so it actually appears like the water is real…and that perhaps that there is even movement in it. This is a special piece to me, there is a lot of symbolism and beauty in Koi fish to me. Also I am drawn to fish in general and life in water. / The bright contrasting colors and dead space of this work is what attracted me to it in the first place. I want to say a special “Thank You” to Rebecca Cruz who let me paint her photo titled Koi As I was creating the name for it, the play on words for “Coy” just kept coming to my heart. Thus “Coy Kiss”! / There is a written work from Venus and Adonis by William Shakespeare, that I chose to describe my work. I feel it perfectly captures my heart for this piece and the moment… ...”Never did passenger in summer’s heat / More thirst for drink than she for this good turn. / Her help she sees, but help she cannot get; / She bathes in water, yet her fire must burn: / ‘O! pity,’ ‘gan she cry, ‘flint-hearted boy: / ‘Tis but a kiss I beg; why art thou coy?”... It was a wonderful piece to work on and I put a lot of myself into it…hopefully you can feel that coming through to you. / To check it out and leave a comment click here Enjoy! xoxo

Hey I need to get more of my work shown , so if anyone knows of any art shows coming up or galleries I should submit my work to please let me know. I know I need to get some new and better pieces created and this might just be the motivation I need. My goal for this new year is to get back into working color and put together a few smaller pencil drawing books…. but its so ^%!*#*( discouraging to hear from galleries who say they love my work but then int he same breath ask me what else can I do. As if pencil drawings isn’t art? Black and white realistic pencil drawings is what i do best, yet I am one step way from giving it all up!! Are there no galleries or art shows that recognize black and white drawings or realistic traditional art any more? Is this the end of real art? David J. I am proud to unveil a new painting from my studio entitled, “Segawa Kikunjojo II”. (Dancing The Part Of Yamauba) My painting is styled after ancient (1760 era) Japanese Graphic art, by artists like Tori Kiyomitsu Ga and Eshi Tori Kiyomasu Hitsu and based on paintings like, The Autumn Moon Above Ishi Mountain and Segawa Kikunojo II, Dancing the Part of Yamuba. / This is the first in my study paintings of ancient Japanese artwork. It was a very intense and rewarding piece to work on. Every line and brush stroke needed to be calculated and yet also flow with an ease and grace. This is my first original painting in a series of many I intend to delve into over the next year. / I am very drawn to Japanese art and grew up with traditional Japanese artwork in my home. The beauty of this type of art has always captured me, as I hope my work will for you as well. Here are some photos of my art as it is being created and completed…enjoy! xoxo

I am really Happy to see that my visit to the Wonderful Replica The Batavia give me three feauteres this week. A replica of the Batavia was built at the Bataviawerf (Batavia Wharf) in Lelystad in the Netherlands. The project lasted from 1985 to 7 April 1995, and was conducted as an employment project for young people under master-shipbuilder Willem Vos. The shipyard is currently reconstructing another 17th century ship. In contrast to the merchant ship Batavia, Michiel de Ruyters’ flagship, the Zeven Provinciën, is a ship of the line. The Batavia replica was built with traditional materials, such as oak and hemp, and using the tools and methods of the time of the original ship’s construction. For the design, good use was made of the remains of the original ship in Fremantle (and of the Vasa in Stockholm), as well as historical sources, such as 17th century building descriptions (actual building plans weren’t made at the time), and prints and paintings by artists (who, at the time, generally painted fairly true to nature), of similar ships. On 25 September 1999, the new Batavia was transported to Australia by barge, and moored at the National Maritime Museum in Sydney. In 2000, Batavia was the flagship for the Dutch Olympic Team during the 2000 Olympic Games. During its stay in Australia, the ship was towed to the ocean once, where it sailed on its own. On 12 June 2001, the ship returned to the Bataviawerf in Lelystad, where it remains on display to visitors. On the evening of October 13th 2008 a fire ripped through the Batavia-werf. Although the sailmaking shed, several office buildings and part of a restaurant were destroyed, as were the sails of replica ship Batavia, the replica of “De Zeven Provinciën” nearby was undamaged. The Batavia was never in danger. Batavia was a ship of the Dutch East India Company (VOC). She was built in Amsterdam in 1628, and had 24 cast-iron cannons. Batavia was shipwrecked on her maiden voyage, and made famous by the subsequent mutiny and massacre that took place among the survivors. A twentieth century replica of the ship is also called the Batavia and can be visited in Lelystad, the Netherlands. 1 . “Figurehead and The Batavia” was featured in Nautical 2. “The Batavia” was featured in Nautical 3. “Light and Dark” was featured in Natural color and light I like to thank the Hosts from the group Nautical and the group Natural color and Light for making my art Featured today. Wish you all a great and lovely Weekend!! Warm greetings from Ien.

Don’t be surprised if you see some Traditional artworks floating around which were done after some of my Self Portraits. I’ve given permission to the group Bubbler Portraits to use me as a model reference for an upcoming Challenge Some photographers don’t want people doing this. But I generally allow people to use my self portraits as references as long as they ask permission first and credit me. The reason being, Traditional art such as drawing and painting is very unique and different from photography. I in no way consider it copying my work, unless they were tracing my image and not being creative with it. I don’t consider this Stock or me giving my work away to be used as Stock, because I don’t allow photo manipulations, collages or other forms of art to be done with my photography. Only Traditional Art. So far it’s been really cool to see different renderings of my self portraits and it’s cool to know I helped the creative process along. However I usually don’t give permission for my photography which was done with a different model or with other people involved, since the work then also belongs to them. And requires their permission. Here are some Traditional Artworks which people have done using my Self Portraits as references: / These people were given my specific permission to use my images and anyone involved in that group challenge has my permission.

  • I like it...but is it Art???

I spent most of last night (until 4 am) trawling through ALL the groups looking for ones to join and ended up joining about 20 I think. Anyway, it took a while but was an interesting experience, especially seeing how some mods both phrase and justify their ‘rules’. One particular group, (which shall go nameless, simply because I can’t remember it, for reasons which will become abundantly clear shortly …but they will know who they are)....got my dander up when I read something in the ‘rules’ along the lines of : / ‘Digital art will be rejected and no explanation given’. / Is this just me, or does that sound a tad ‘confrontational’, not to say ‘elitist’??? Anyway, needless to say, I didn’t see much point in even attempting to join, seeing as I am now a ‘digital’ artist. Please note the word ‘Now’. For the majority of the time I have been painting and drawing to make a living (over 30 years), I used paint, paper, ink, pencil, airbrush, collage, montage, frottage etc etc etc and it was only relatively recently that I went digital for a number of reasons, some economic, some health / (eyesight) related. I reckon I can legitimately call myself a ‘painter’ if I so choose. / But, using that person’s criteria, it seems I am not one any more. All of a sudden I’m not, just because I switched tools. A carpenter suddenly wants to use a spanner so he’s no longer a carpenter but a plumber or an mechanic…Okay. I get the picture… Check this. 99% of people who make such sweeping assumptions have NEVER seen a digital artist at work, and just assume it’s all prompts, commands and mouse clicks. You just press a few keys and Voila! I picture appears!!! I had this very problem, years ago, convincing the WWF that I was NOT going to be simply manipulating their ref photos, but still painting the art, but just using light, instead of paint. When they saw the first piece I did for them, they immediately changed their POV. / Simply put, the end justified the means. 20+ years ago, when computers were much less powerful than they are now, and graphics tablets didn’t even exist, you still had to know how to paint and draw to create anything that looked remotely like ART no a circuitboard diagram, and it still applies now despite the amazing advances in hardware and software. Sure, you can use a bunch of presets and filters and know little about color theory and come up with something that looks okay, but if you can draw and paint already, it’s just another way of working and the end result will show the difference. I use EXACTLY the same techniques and skills with my stylus and tablet as I did / (and sometimes still do) with a brush and canvas or pencil and paper. I can still do it like that. I just choose not to for reasons already explained. It’s about time people with that attitude realised that digital art is every bit as valid as using traditional media. I know. I have used both extensively and so am in a position to judge. I doubt if that person can say the same, apart from maybe a brief foray into Photoshop to tweak some photos. Not the same thing. The obvious ‘repost’ will no doubt be: ‘There are already many groups for digital art’. Yeah? so what? There are also many that cater for both. There are also many that include photography as well. / IT IS ALL ART. I don’t think I came across ONE digital art group, or any other kind for that matter, that announced ‘Traditional painting will be rejected and no explanation given’. Please correct me if I’m wrong. This notion that trad media is somehow ‘superior’ and more valid than digital is an attitude which belongs in the 80’s and beyond. It’s as out of date and erroneous as the idea that abstract painting or even expressionsim, isn’t ’ real art’ either. So, that’s my 10c worth. Apologies for ‘shouting’ but this attitude really gets up my nose and it’s one that doesn’t belong on RB. / It’s CREATIVITY that counts. An orchestra makes beautiful music. / And finally, if the person who made that comment wants to challenge me and justify their position, that’s cool , but it won’t prove them right. / d’O

“This is a Group For Traditional Artists who love painting florals and wish to showcase their chosen Subject and Traditional Mediums. Please, no digital works and no photos or photo manipulations; traditionally painted works only.” / Tradition: an inherited pattern of thought or action custom: a specific practice of long standing I got my Corel Photo-point 8 from my Dad, and in more ways than one. He bought it, he talked me into trying it (when I was dead set against digital art because of all the “rubber stamp” sort of digital art there is out there), except that I started out with a different number. It was Corel Photopaint 4 or something. So, it is inherited thought and action. I have been using Corel Photo-paint since I was 19 years old, or thereabouts. Maybe 21, maybe 17. So, at the very least, I have been using it for what is fast approaching 20 years. I was not the first person to make a piece of digital art. They were doing it long before I got involved. So, it is a specific practice of long standing, on a personal level and on a larger scale, too. And, as for photography, well .. it has been around a bit longer than that, as has manipulation of photos. In fact, as I have pointed out before, when I was a child, photography was finally accepted as artwork, but, acrylics and watercolor paintings still were not considered accepted, traditional forms of painting. So, I wonder, does that mean they will not let people post watercolor and acrylic paintings in that group that I have quoted, above? I doubt it. Well, guess what, close-minded people: I paint traditionally, as traditionally as you do. Digital art existed BEFORE anything other than oil paintings, or pen and ink, were accepted as traditional art. Oh, and, of course, carving in marble. So, say what you mean, but, stop being belittling, derogatory, or just plain otherwise rude about it. If what you want is only paintings on canvas or paper, say so! If you only want oils, say so. But, don’t you dare insult what I do, just to make you feel more like an actual artist, because I can paint circles around you.. and I would .. and it wouldn’t be traditional, but, it would be symbolic, and it would be art. I wish to showcase my chosen subject and traditional medium and I love painting florals. I love painting them digitally, as is my tradition. So much fear of what you don’t understand! How is that sort of talk “playing nice”? To further illustrate the point, here is another quote: / “This is a Group For Artists who love painting STILL LIFE And Florals and wish to Highlight their chosen Subject and Medium. / Only florals, or still life with flowers, fruit, or vegetables will be accepted. / WATERCOLOR ONLY! / Acrylic will be accepted ONLY if used as a water medium in the style of watercolors” These quotes were from two different groups, wherein one painting I recently favorited, was submitted. Please note the difference. The first one is insulting photography and digital art. The other one is making a statement of the exclusive nature of the group. Which makes it a bit of a bummer, that I can’t join in the fun, and I still have nowhere to post my lovely flower piccies, but, at least I’m not being insulted! And, before you tell me to calm down, or not to get angry: I am not angry. What I am is a member of a community, the Red Bubble community, that says that people should “play nice”, and who wants other people to also follow that suggestion. I mean, there are many times I have run into things that I did not consider art, or at least not “real” art, and did I make bold, sweeping statements or even mean little comments about it? No, I did not. It’s not for me to judge the issue, except on a personal level. I had groups and I did not want to see nudes, so I put down that nudes were not accepted. I did not say that nudes were untraditional or that they are not art. It is obvious, by their duration, that they are capabe of being both. So, if you don’t want digital art, put down what you do want and what is accepted, is what I’m saying. Just don’t say digital art is not traditional, because it makes you look close-minded, prudish, behind the times, and insane, to those of us who know better. We “play nice” and don’t respond to your insults with emails that start out with “F… you people!” or that speak of your unobservant nature; but, that doesn’t mean we aren’t thinking it. Why do you want to tear the community down with your prejudcies? / It is not too much to ask that you simply stop insulting our art mediums, now, is it? Thank you for your time.
