The valley lies within the range of the Navajo Nation Reservation, and is accessible from U.S. Highway 163. The Navajo name for the valley is Tsé Bii’ Ndzisgaii (Valley of the Rocks). / The area is part of the Colorado Plateau. The floor is largely Cutler Red siltstone or its sand deposited by the meandering rivers that carved the valley. The valley’s vivid red color comes from iron oxide exposed in the weathered siltstone. The darker, blue-gray rocks in the valley get their color from manganese oxide. / Monument Valley has been featured in many forms of media since the 1930s. 3200 ISO is a brave new world for me. As a self confessed low ISO junkie, one who used Ektar 25 film whenever and wherever he could for many years because I wanted tight grain, the tighter the better, I would pull out all the stops I could to use that amazing ISO 25 film! For sure I’d never gone above ISO 1000 and then only to shoot indoor sporting events. Low ISO was(?) a hang-up for me! But I wanted to try astral photography and high ISO can get you there! However as we all know high ISO leads to increased noise which is something fairly new to me. You can use software and Photoshop plugins but I’ve been considering, one way to control noise would be to minimize or eliminate it by keeping the ISO as low as possible and that’s one way I‘m leaning. So in that regard it looks like a fast 50 prime is in order! It’s fun to be experimenting and learning, eh! Another view of this beautiful village sitting on the shores of Loch Carron, with a backdrop of the Applecross and Torridon Hills. Extremely and desevedly popular with the tourists. Taken around eight years ago on my Ricoh KR10 Super mounted on a tripod, F 11, can’t remember the lens, polarising filter, scanned into my PC on my Nikon Coolscan VED, then into Adobe PS CS3, with a little tidying up of noise/dust. / Shot on Fuji Velvia, 50asa. tricky film but fantastic for Landscape when you got it right ! The Moulton Barn, Mormon Row, Teton National Park, Jackson, Wyoming, USA. I got up early for this one, I had travelled thousands of miles to see it, had only one morning to get my shot in the bag – and what did I find ? / A film crew shooting an advert ! Along with a battalion of other photographers, I was champing at the ‘bit’, since we weren’t allowed to shoot in case we captured the models – male and female – the whole darned thing was so artificial !! So, when there was a lull in shooting, I crept under a bush and hastily ‘snapped’ my shot. Maybe I should pursue a career in the ‘Paparazzi ??!!! Shot on my Canon EOS 40D with polarising filter attached, mounted very hastily on my tripod, Canon efs 18-55mm lens set at 45mm, underexposed by half a stop, f 27, 1/20 sec, auto wb, iso 100, RAW file developed as much as possible in Adobe Camera Raw, then in PS CS3, selective Levels/Curves, saturation of colours achieved with LAB colour, then the tiniest amount of Orton applied, to ‘pop’ the textures of the wood and grass. We spent a weeks holiday in this area, and the weather was pretty poor most days, I had a hard time pulling anything good out of my Canon 40D !! / However, on the last morning, I woke early to a glimmer of light, and planned to shoot the early morning light falling on the Summer Isle. Of course, that didn’t work out, so feeling despondant, drove around the corner to turn around. / Glad I did, for less than five minutes, the light played ball ! / I knew I couldn’t shoot for a conventional shot, far too much contrast with those sunbeams, so I settled for a three – shot , hand-held, HDR image. There wasn’t time to set up the tripod, but I didn’t need it, since great depth of field was not required on this occasion. Luckily I had my IS ( image stabilisation ) lens already fitted ! The light rapidly disappeared under a big blanket of cloud, which remained with us in the North West for over a WEEK !! / It was however, a magical moment, filled with adrenaline ! Shot on my Canon EOS 40D, Canon 17-85mm f4.0-5.6 IS USM lens set at 79mm, 0EV, -2EV, +2EV, RAW, iso 100, cloudy wb, then processed in Photomatix, and further enhanced in Adobe Photoshop CS3, where I had to do some more selective Tone Mapping, in particular the moorland, where I wanted a little ‘pool’ of light. I also helped along the sunbeams with a subtle use of ‘dodging and burning’. / LAB colour was also employed, gently. The ‘warm up ’ photo filter was also used in Layers, and eradicated from areas not required by using Layer masks and painted out. / The result was what I had in my mind when I saw the scene, and could not be described as a true record of the scene before me. / This is the Digital Age, let us enjoy it, and use it to advantage !! The beautiful Isle of Skye. / Typical Scottish Highland weather, bursts of sunlight, lasting for three minutes if you are lucky, between heavy showers that soak you to the skin, lasting around five hours. Or more. LOL ! / You don’t have to be mad to live here, but it helps, as the saying goes ! A magic place all the same ! / Have you ever tried to set up a tripod where the heather and bog myrtle grow in abundance, teetering on the brink of a raging burn? (Burn = river) It ain’t easy ! / It causes you endless grief, for one thing, the blasted tripod wobbles around, and it disturbs those dear wee midges, which bite you to the brink of insanity, then you have a wee puppy craving attention threatening to knock the tripod/camera/you into the burn, and I can’t swim either. / Combined with Family members watching your attempts and laughing then getting bored, it is a small wonder that any images get produced at all. Professional ?? Ha Ha Ha Ha !! / Hysterical laughter ! Shot on my CANON EOS 40D, mounted, sort of, on my tripod, polarising filter, f22, 1/4 sec, 17-85mm IS Canon lens, at 22mm, iso100, auto wb, three shot RAW files processed in Photomatix, then fiddled around with in PS CS3, with some more selective tone mapping applied. LAB colour to finish. / Slight vignette. We really don’t get much snow on the West Coast of Scotland, because of the influence of the Gulf Stream, and on the rare occasion it does fall, it is soon gone!! / Beinn Bhan is one of the peaks of the Applecross range, seen here from near Ardarroch, Loch Kishorn, on a gorgeous Winter’s afternoon. just as the sun was going down…at around 3.30pm !! Saint Mary Lake, Glacier National Park, Montana, USA. Where else would you want to be on a morning like this ? The Elk were bugling across the Lake, it was warm, the air was very still, reflections all around me, gorgeous mountains everywhere…......... / felt like I was in heaven !! / All I had to do was get down a very steep bank on the lakeside – then get back up, Help !! / Magic ! Mesa Arch, Canyonlands NP, Utah, USA. Utah has an amazing landscape, there is so much to see, very photogenic with all that red rock, especially viewed against a very blue sky ! (I like it best when there are a few clouds as well though !) This Arch is reached along a rocky trail, and is very impressive, as it perfectly frames the view beyond. / We did quite a few of the trails in Canyonlands and Arches, and found the very dry going underfoot an absolute dream, since we are more used to having to play ‘dodge the bog’ here in super-wet Scotland ! Shot on Fuji Velvia, around seven years ago. I scanned it on to my PC with my Nikon Coolscan VED, and tidied up a bit of ‘dust’ in Photoshop. I also beefed up the red colour for more impact. Another image from Yellowstone National Park , Wyoming, on our holiday from last Autumn. (2008) / West Thumb Geyser basin is on the shores of Yellowstone Lake, and is a kaleidoscope of colours, like Mother Nature went crazy with Photoshop !! Boardwalks go in various directions, and it is a hard choice, which way shall I go ??!! I chose to ‘follow the light’ / and Mother Nature gave me a helping hand with a sky straight from my dreams ! / I hope you enjoy this one ! Standing above the village of Talisker, you get a tremendous view to the beautiful Cuillin mountains. / I got very lucky with the light here, on a day when the / sun and clouds were playing cat and mouse. Towards evening, the sun broke through long enough to capture the light falling on the village of Merkadale below. / Talisker is famous for the distillery where many visitors go to taste the Malt Whisky. / I confess to being a heathen…....I prefer a nice Cabernet Sauvignon !! This is the Isle of Skye at it’s best, when there is a lot of colour in the landcsape, with the low sun we get this far North at this time of year, accentuating every detail. / This is the crofting community of Tarskavaig, with the glorious backdrop of the Cuillin Hills. / “Crofting” is small time farming, or “smallholding” where a few crops might be grown, and a small number of cattle or sheep kept. Kyleakin is the first village encountered on the Isle of Skye, when you cross over the bridge from Kyle of Lochalsh…....this is where the old Ferry boat used to land, which I don’t miss at all, romantic it might be, but darned inconvenient !! / The old ruin you can see behind the boats is Castle Moil…......a few facts for you….... “The 14th Century Castle Moil has had many names in its long history. Also known as Dun Akyn (Norse for Hakon’s Fort) and An Caisteal Maol in Gaelic, it is now a romantic ruin. Sited at the Skye end of the road bridge in the village of Kyleakin, the castle has Norse connections. Legend has it that a Norwegian princess, otherwise known as “Saucy Mary”, ordered a chain to be hung from the castle to the mainland so that no boat could pass without paying a tax.” / Nothing new under the sun then, eh ??!! LOL !! Well, it rains more often than not on Skye, so a chance to use a photographic opportunity ! A few breaks in the cloud, the weak sun spotlighting the Landcsape…......click, shot in the bag ! / I love the thunder of water that echoes around me when I capture a shot like this, it raises my adrenaline level, and I confess to getting “high” !! / A late evening shot. A three shot HDR, RAW files, taken on my CanonEOS40D, mounted on tripod, f23, iso100, auto wb, polariser fitted to help blur the water a little more, (a ND would have done a lot more!), then processed in Photomatix, titivated up in Adobe CS3. Further enhancement, by duplicating the HDR image, applying full strength Orton, then layering back on to the original, (HDR!) and reducing the opacity until I was happy with the result ! The iconic Liathach rises above Loch Clair, on a beautiful Winter’s day. / Not a perfect reflection, but still a wonderful scene. The dead tree has stood there for as long as I remember, in just the right place for a great composition. / Liathach is one of the Torridon Hills, in the North West of Scotland. Shot on my Canon EOS 40D, tripod, polariser, f19, 1/20sec, iso 100, auto wb, single RAW file pseudo HDR in Photomatix, tweaked in PS CS3, and a final layer of Orton, reducing the opacity, to make the colours ‘pop’.
