I have some photos on display that were taken in North Korea, and I thought it only fair that I include the story that goes along with them. I entered this in a travel writing competition recently (it didn’t win) and I’m posting it here so at least some one might get some enjoyment out of it! Not technically related to ‘Japanfluence’, but I thought it might be interesting to a few of you Japonophiles – here’s looking at you TBO!

Dusk in Assam at the border of India and Bhutan is like being halfway to heaven. On one side of the majestic Manas River is the lush national park which takes its name from the river, and on the other are the misty Himalayan foothills, which turn golden at sunset.

This may seem a bit ‘bah humbug’, but until you’ve lived in a tourist area, you will not be able to understand how inconvenient an influx of these visitors can be! I’ve made a few re-writes of this poem, two of which were published . The first was in Arrival Press’s ‘North East Poets’ in 1995. A second version was published by United Press in ‘Life’s Wonders’ in February 2009.
