I wrote this a while ago with the intention of starting a new series of paintings on the Wizard of Oz….the idea is still there… I hope to begin a new painting/series soon on the subject. What I have written here, is the unfolding of the research work on my subject…it is important that I gain a deep understanding or insight into my subject, as well as preparing the visual side of things, i like to get a feel for it spiritually, or at least have an empathy with/for my subject/s. I read different editions of the story itself, and look at as many different illustrations as possible, rewatch the movie a few times, and listen to any music associated with it…for example the tracks from the movie, as well as things like Elton John’s and Katie Noonan’s versions of Goodbye Yellow Brick Road and eminem’s Yellow Brick Road and Raine Maida – Yellow Brick Road and anything else i can find associated with the imagery of the story… Somewhere over the Rainbow by Judy Garland / Somewhere over the Rainbow Eva Cassidy / Somewhere Over the Rainbow by Kamakawiwo / Fields of Gold Eva Cassidy

My sister in law has a dog of no known parentage. Toto is a rescued dog with unfortunate incontinence problems. She is not a beautiful dog. She had a tough life before joining our extended family and is still shows signs of being traumatised, she tries so so hard to please all the time…but this doggy smile was very real, so I am sharing it. please enjoy.

The original painting is a 5×7 miniature work done with pencil and acrylic paint. This is a “free association” work that I did while watching the SciFi Channel’s mini-series “Tin Man”, which was a modern re-working of “The Wizard of Oz”. Dorothy’s face has merged with the tornado to dance across this checked game board in this surrealist image that I hope you will enjoy.

Some of us grew up with the Wizard of Oz. Full of magic & wonder. I was in a theater the other day & I passed a closed door that had a sign on it that said: Nobody gets in to see the wizard. Not nobody, not no how! A quote from the beloved Wizard movie. I decided it deserved a Tee!

Shot outside the Tropicana Juice Bar, Elizabeth Street, Melbourne. I took a few images from front-on and then I realised that shooting from side-on would give me some interesting depth of field, as well as the two signs between the displays of oranges. I do not crop, enhance or post-edit my images in any way. Shot with a Pentax K100D, using a Sigma 18-125mm lens. F6.7, 1/45 sec, ISO 800, focal length 75mm. Featured in JUST WALLS, September 2009. “Toto I Don’t Think We’re In Kansas Anymore!” / Dorothy Gale/”The Wizard Of Oz” New York Botanical Garden/Bronx, New York Olympus E-10 This is a section of the spectacular Tulip Walk at the New York Botanical Garden. The array of colors found there can almost take your breath away. I was looking at the image trying to think of a title and the first thing that popped into my head was when “The Wizard Of Oz” magically switches from black and white to glorious Technicolor.

My newest puppy! he desperately needed a home so after much thought and consideration and spending some time with him I decided to take him. he’s a 4 year old shytzu ( can’t spell it right now lol) He’s very mellow and a true sweetheart. I’m still really sick with a bad lung infection and struggling to stay awake for more than 30 mins at a time, and conducting business so i haven’t been on as much as I would like. I have a shoot booked for saturday so planning on sleeping as much as i can before then. fingers crossed that the antibiotics work. / love you all / huggles
