Henri-Chapelle American Cemetery and Monument (Belgium) At the Henri-Chapelle American Cemetery and Memorial in Belgium, covering 57 acres, rest 7,992 of our military dead, most of whom lost their lives during the advance of the U.S. armed forces into Germany. Their headstones are arranged in gentle arcs sweeping across a broad green lawn that slopes gently downhill. A highway passes through the reservation. West of the highway an overlook affords an excellent view of the rolling Belgian countryside, once a battlefield.

Hear my plea sweet angels mine, / Hear my plea my loves beyond time. I ask thee – my guardian – to spread thy wings, / I ask thee – while my soul gently for thee sings. My song of prayer shall fill the air, / My song shall remove my inner despair. Oh, my shelter – my home-bringing light, / can’t thou just lift me up in my darkest night? Can’t thou be me guidance through the far-away land, / may I stretch out my shivering hand? Comfort me – my angel – my love, / hear my plea and take me to my realm up above! Together we will celebrate and sing … / down on Earth the humans will say: ‘Listen … the angels sing!’ ** / This monument inspired me to write this poem. The angel standing there – so fragile, so strong … so asking, so helpful – so peaceful! Angel monument – Melaten cemetary, Cologne, Germany

Something all of us have to deal with at some point in life. Whatever form it comes in, it does need to be dealt with and moved on from as quickly as possible. When times get tough, get creative. I have always been fascinated with the history and design of La Hougue Bie in the parish of St. Saviors, in Jersey CI (channel islands) dating back nearly 6,000 years. At the base of the 12 meter high mound of earth and stone is an opening. You then have a 9.5 meter crawl down the chamber passage to the heart of the Cairn and the centre of this site of worship and ceremony. The long passage is designed to capture the light of the rising sunlight of both the spring and autumn equinox, revealing that the orientation of the passage allows the sun’s rays to shine through to the chamber which reaches to the back recess of the terminal cell (the furthest back chamber). / The information on this website says, “The rising sun’s rays first strike the dividing slab of the terminal chamber about 25cm above ground, and 60cm from the northern edge, the beam then tracks north until it enters the terminal chamber itself. After leaving the terminal chamber, the floor of the sanctuary and the eastern edge of the sill stone become flooded with light, the strong reflections from these areas illuminate the entire rear section of the chamber. Finally the shaft of light lowers as the sun rises and the floor of the chamber and passage become bathed in a ribbon of sunlight gradually lengthening towards the entrance. A spectacular display.” / I would love to go on one of these mornings to see the magnificent event. The site is managed and cared for by the Jersey Heritage Trust, connected to the Société Jersiaise. As we were leaving New Orleans, we stopped to visit St. Louis Cemetery No. 1 on Basin Street. The oldest extant cemetery in the city. It was established by Spanish Royal decree in 1789. It is a fascinating place to visit. Tombs of some of the earliest residents are located here and also the reported final resting place of Marie Laveau, the Voodoo Queen of the city from the 19th century. This Cemetery was also a location featured in the film classic ‘Easy Rider’. No visit to the city would have been complete without a stop to visit this historic area. View and buy the calendar
