Stillness of spirit amidst chaos. That is the way I remember that afternoon, arriving to Harajuku station on my way to Meiji-Shingu shrine in Tokyo. I was alway informed of a co-existence of old and new in the Land of the Rising Sun, but I did not understand it until I arrived. Tokyo itself is like a flower in eternal bloom, with petals of modernity and tradition unfolding before your eyes with every waking step. I recall passing by a holy man on my way to the shrine- a man with eyes closed, pursed lips, arms extending outwards in search of sacredness, oblivious to the exterior tumultuous chaos and everyday flux of the station that afternoon. He was sitting in the middle of the bridge that connects Harajuku and Meiji shrine- a couple of feet above the whirlwind of Yamanote Japanese rail tracks. It was sacredness amidst chaos, tradition unscathed by modernity. Everything around him was transitory, in chaotic flux, and he was the only one that had the secret passage to eternity that afternoon. He was all beginnings, all ends, all in betweens.

I uploaded the first really big panorama that I took back in March 2006 to gigapan.org. It only weighs in at 0.2 gigapixels, which is small compared to some others on the site, but is still good for a jolly ol’ armchair exploring session (cheaper than another airline ticket, at least). Check it out />http://gigapan.org/viewGigapan.php?id=604 and see what you can find! I’m wondering what the maximum advised pixel size is for uploading such an image for a large print on redbubble, keeping in mind the 20Mb maximum file size and 24 inch longest edge . At 300dpi, a 24 inch wide panorama would require 7200 pixels across, less than 1/3 the size of the original. :)

Whilst on a recent trip to Tokyo, I went to the Leica Gallery in Ginza. They have a wonderful collection of old and new cameras and small photography gallery. The current display is by Julio Bittencourt from Brazil, who has taken pictures of homeless people living in a dilapidated abandoned building in Sao Paolo. Simply brilliant photography. I was also lucky to have a play with a Leica M7, which was just fabulous. A completely manual DSLR, with a DOF and focus capability that left me drooling, however the price of 777,000 yen (around A$8000) was a little out of my league! The Ginza store is the only retail owned Leica store in the world, all the rest are franchises or dealers. The manager speaks very good English and was happy to spend time explaining the camera and discussing photography. Well worth a visit if you are in Tokyo.

In Ebisu, you will find the Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Photography. At the time of writing there were four exhibitions, including… Visions of America Part 1, The Star-Spangled Banner (1839 -1917) was an exhibition of early US photopgraphers. My favourite was William Henry Jackson. His photos of Yellowstone in 1871 contributed to the establishment of the national park in 1872. There is a superb panaroma of Yosemite… unfortunately I can’t find a copy of the panorama, but here is a similar and exquisite perspective by Globalphotos Another exhibition was World Press Photo 2008 which had many harrowing photos from around the world, dominated by conflict and violence.

A work in progress, the Bunny Bot is my first attempt at Vector Style Art. I have hand styled a figure from one of my photos taken at the Tokyo Anime Fair 2008. She is definitely a labour of love and I thought I would never finish her, but here she is. I am not sure if she is an actual anime character or where she originates from. I would greatly appreciate any help to credit her creators and origins. I have not made her available for sale as a print yet as I am stuck on ideas for a suitable background/ home for her to appear in. If she inspires ideas please share. Robo Bunny Bot is available as a T-shirt print. I thought she could easily stand alone in this format.

The beauty of the everyday…in another country I never thought I would be so inspired by looking down at the street. My first morning in Tokyo, just over a week ago, I was out in the street with my camera at about 7am. Now that is early for me! Considering that I’d had no sleep, then been up at 4am Australian time the day before to catch a 6am flight, had 3 hours to wait for a connection, an hour long train ride into Tokyo, another metro connection to make, then a walk to my hotel (pushing it to check in before 10pm), perhaps it was an exhausted delirium that made me take pictures of the road surface. But just look at them! Everyday things to the Japanese…I found these absolutely beautiful….hence, the following collection. I certainly attracted some strange looks from the locals. Fleur was the lookout so that I didn’t get run over as I perfected my pictures…but the streets were pretty quiet. / I managed to find some more to add to my collection a few days later. I’m not sure what these will inspire me to do, but I’m bound to use them for something sometime. Guess they would make a lovely calendar if I could narrow the collection down to twelve or thirteen! Thanks Natalie for the challenge which made me put this all together! a bit of Tokyo gallery inspiration…

just a quick point. / i live in Japan and i have moved in with my wife.. Cos i have moved in to her house which she rents with her house mate they now have to pay $10 more a month cos im here. Point one ,who gives a flying fuck about $10 over a month in Tokyo.(so why make some one pay such a little amount more when you will just be pissing of the renter for so little proft.? ) Point two , how does that even make sense to charge more of another person?..eg what happens if i have a baby with my wife will the rent go up? Point three, they have other things like `key money` which means you have to GIVE 2 weeks rent for the key.( this is not bond in which you would get back when you leave the house. you simple lose that money) Renting in Japan is painful and costly.

It’s the morning of our second day in Japan, and it’s a testament to the pace that we’ve been going at that we’re having our ‘restful day’ on our second day here. / We arrived in the evening and were met by my brother, looking severely blond in the crowd (this is from a bottle, he is channeling Paris Hilton, clearly…) after a train journey of about an hour or so (which is just the thing after a 13 hr journey) we arrived in the suburb of Oji, where my brother lives, and walked for another 10 or so minutes till we got to my brother’s very spacious apartment, in which two, or maybe even three mice, could easily stretch out and relax. Yup, it’s little. It’s soooo little. To give you an idea, it’s about a third of the size of our flat in Parkdale. But hey, it’s free, and clean, and we get to see Slate (though he may regret this in time..) so I’m not complaining. / Once we dumped our bags, had a shower using my brother’s patented ‘modesty curtain’ (a cheapy tatami mat that we dangle from a hook in front of the see through shower door) we decided, well, as it’s only 11pee emm, lets get on our bikes (literally, he’s got three) and ride on down into town for drinkies and nosh. / We ended up at a very nice little ‘pub’ where we sat on the floor and ate tapas style with lovely Japanese pickles, rice and noodley goodness items, accompanied by giant mugs of falling down water. I have discovered Japanese ‘sour’ drinks, which are huge, not really sour, and make me happy. This is a good thing, but slightly less so when I then have to get back on a wobbly fold up bike and ride around the neighbourhood…. hehe…but it was funny…very funny. / Yesterday, our first real day here, was spent riding the rails and getting to grip with the metro system. We covered a lot of ground, walked up and down a lot of hills, and got a lot of sunburn. ouch. I’ve seen a lot of strange things already, and am expecting to see many many more, but one overriding factor that I can see, is that so many things here are CUTE, or geared towards being cute. The shops are cute, the food is cute, the clothes are cute, the people are cute. It all gathers together to make something strange and a bit out there, because at home, it’s not really an acceptable pastime, just being cute, but here it’s A CALLING. Today we’re going to get back on the bikes and ride around the neighbourhood, and see if we can find some parks and photo opportunities. Michael is having no trouble with this, and my brother and I often have to double back to find him crouched in some corner or another, getting that ‘perfect shot’ Ok, that’s enough for now, I have some sunburn to go and work on, and my little wheely folding companion is waiting to show me the sights =) / Big Love, Lucky

Apologies for the quick journal, I promise to put up more photos, less writing and more interesting Stuff TM that can be seen in and around this city. Here’s 3 for the road (more are still going through the processing farm inside this laptop) (I’ve been shooting both in black and white and colour but these all are of the low saturation kind.) I know it’s only a short number of pics but I hope you enjoy this and I’ll see you all soon.

So I am back, with a quick update, I’m still going through the photos that we’ve taken and putting up a quick selection of the photos taken for you to see, should you want to get my eye view of the land with the Vending Machines on each street corner. Our host and the beneficial cabbage being interrupted by a tram. / A metro station pulling away from the train / The old ‘Shinjuku ants running toward each other’ trick / Our host and a Bright pickle pouring over a Pub menu / Various Food items at another alcohol laden venue / Shibuya Lights for a skyline. / Arabian Nights Pub= Some explosive powder and nothing really Arabian at all / ...but with some great wallpaper reading material and depth of field perception / The Romance Express passes the daily grind / Two trams for two lines, / My two companions walking back by the lights of the vending machines / ... hopefully enough photos for now.

So after a while away in Japan I am finally getting round to showing some of my photos from the land that brought us the benefit of all night noodle shops, private Karaoke and giant robots. So from Harajuku to Odaiba, from Ueno to Shibuya, from Tokyo to Hiroshima, here are some more of the wonderful world. In no particular order: / Vintage rockers at Harajuku park… / ...and pose. / ... and twist / Hiroshima Trams / Childish excitement / and jump. / Friends drinking before Karaoke(and they were still friends after too) / Typhoon Tokyo / Crashes in Odaiba / Singing in style / Ginza Lights. and that’s probably enough for now. (If you want more I’ll post up another journal in a few days)
