I painted the famous Angraecum sesquipedale orchid and its nocturnal pollinator hawk moth Xanthopan morganii predicta on an inquiry received from the Smithsonian National Institute of Natural History Washington, D.C., USA. It will be published soon in a textbook on art and science for students of the Myongji University, South Korea. The plant and the pollinator hawk moth illustration as well as the size relationships are based on exact measurements. English vernacular names are “Comet Orchid”, “Christmas Star” or “The Star of Bethlehem Orchid”. Interested plant lovers might wish to read more about how the educated guess of Charles Darwin came true eleven years later and recorded on the golden pages of orchidology and lepidopterology almost fifty-five years later.

They Neither Toil Nor Spin Once in an early morning time when the children were / sleeping and I was enjoying the tranquil beginnings of a new day, I noticed a little squirrel just outside my bedroom window. He was scratching around in search of his breakfast when all of a sudden he caught sight of a luscious find—a plump mushroom that had sprung up almost magically during the rainy hours before dawn. The squirrel nibbled all around the tender cap of the mushroom leaving behind only a naked stem. Not long after, another squirrel appeared. Evidently he wasn’t too persnickety because he chomped eagerly into the leftover stem with great relish, sending bits and pieces flying across the lawn for the next hungry creature that came by. It was an amusing little scenario, but it was also inspiring and instructive. I thought about how those two little squirrels had fallen asleep the night before when there was no mushroom in sight. Most likely they had drifted off peacefully, instinctively relying on the One who always provides. In the morning, they had gone out in search of that provision, had found it and accepted it, not only without complaint, but with exuberance and enthusiasm. Like the lilies of the field, I realized, the squirrels neither toil nor spin, not in the sense that they don’t work, for they do. But, rather in the sense that they do not expend valuable energy and time in needless worry, fretfulness, or grumbling. The next time a need arises in my life and there are / no answers in sight, I hope I’ll think of the lilies of / the field and the squirrels in my yard. I hope that / I too will neither toil nor spin.
Oil Pastel and Acrylic Concept: Like The Dreamer, this was drawn on the first year anniversary, 365 days of being on my own after resigning from previous job. I feel that I’m in the season of sowing, toiling in love for the things that matter most to me. The heat is on! Will press on nevertheless!! :D View my other “The Sower” creations in my Zazzle store:
These mothers have their children sitting on the side of the field while they toil picking beans, The heat is sweltering and yet their children do not complain.
Double, double toil and trouble; / Fire burn, and caldron bubble. / Fillet of a fenny snake, / In the caldron boil and bake; / Eye of newt, and toe of frog, / Wool of bat, and tongue of dog, / Adder’s fork, and blind-worm’s sting, / Lizard’s leg, and owlet’s wing,— / For a charm of powerful trouble, / Like a hell-broth boil and bubble. / Macbeth / William Shakespeare (1564-1616) Melbourne Zoo Orangutan Suma seems to have that glint in her eye as the pot is stirred that means trouble for someone in the Orangutan enclosure . The Orangutans here are constantly at play and chase each other across the ropes and structures provided for them to enjoy the chase. A joy to watch as they play to their audience every day. / Nikon D300 ; Lens Nikkor 80-200mm ED VR / 220mm, 1/250s, f/5.3, ISO:1600
