Claims that Sweeney Todd was a real person are strongly disputed by scholars, although there are possible legendary prototypes, arguably making the story of Sweeney Todd an example of an urban legend. In the original version of the tale he is a barber who murders wealthy customers by pulling a lever while they are in his barber chair which, unknown to them, is fixed to a revolving trap-door, making them fall backward into the basement, generally causing them to break their necks or skulls as they hit the ground. Just in case they are alive, he goes to the basement and “polishes them off”, meaning he slits their throats with a cut-throat razor. After Todd has robbed his dead victims of their goods, Mrs. Lovett, his partner in crime (in some later versions, his friend who wants to become his lover), assists him in disposing of the bodies by having their flesh baked into meat pies, and selling them to the unsuspecting customers of her pie shop. Todd’s barber shop is situated at 186 Fleet Street, London, next to St. Dunstan’s church, and is connected to Mrs. Lovett’s pie shop in nearby Bell Yard by means of an underground passage.

Kitty Todd Preserve consists of a mosaic of plant communities including sand barren, black oak savanna, sedge meadow and wet prairie communities typical of the Oak Openings region. Kitty Todd Preserve is one of the finest nature preserves in the Oak Openings region of northwestern Ohio. The preserve was named in honor of Toledo conservationist and former Nature Conservancy board member, Kitty Todd. The Oak Openings region was originally characterized by a series of windblown sand dunes and wetlands that were saturated in winter and spring and extremely dry in summer. These conditions gave rise to vegetation ranging from dry sand barren and oak savanna on the raised dunes to moist sedge meadow and wet prairie in the low-lying swales. Okay, so maybe this is homage to Sweeney Todd, the demon barber of Fleet Street – or not! I shot this in Degraves Street, Melbourne, yesterday. The weather was very cloudy and there was a chill winter wind, so all the gas heaters on the street were turned up high. I was on the lookout for vibrant colour – and there is never any shortage in this area. I only shot about two dozen frames as I didn’t have much time to spare, but this sight really caught my eye. Despite the black wall and the brown background of both these large signs, I thought it would be great to compose a frame that included the classic red-and-white striped pole, as well as part of the lit interior of the shop. I was just about to hit the shutter when the woman with long ash-blonde hair walked past, so I included her in the shot as well. Even though she is anonymous and out of the main focus zone, she really does fit the message of the image. The use of the word “forces” is interesting and almost harks back to World War II. I do not crop, enhance or post-edit my images in any way. Shot with a Pentax K100D, using a Sigm 18-125mm lens. F8, 1/45, ISO 800, focal length 68mm. I love this show. We only get it here in short bursts of about 12 episodes at a time. But anything is better than Mr.Bean reruns. I heard that they have a new show now called NCIS: LA. Maybe we will get that next season.
