  • This man Pablo, brought me to his home in Taquile Island in the middle of lake Titikaka, He is a part of the “Aymara” a native ethnic group in the Andes and Altiplano regions of South America; about 2.3 million live in Bolivia, Peru, Northern Chile, and Northwestern Argentina. They lived in the region for many centuries before becoming a subject people of the Inca, and later of the Spanish in the 16th century. / The Aymara have existed in the Andes in what is now Bolivia (and, to a lesser extent, Peru) for over 2,000 years, according to some estimates. It is most likely that the Inca had a strong influence over the Aymara region for some time. Though conquered by the Inca, the Aymara retained some degree of autonomy under the empire. There were a number of ethnic groups which were later to be known Aymara by the Spanish. These were divided upon different chieftaincies. Upon arrival of the Spanish, all these groups were spread in what today is Bolivia. / Most present day Aymara-speakers live in the Lake Titicaca basin beginning in Lake Titicaca through Desaguadero River and into Lake Poopo (Oruro) also known as the Altiplano, and are concentrated south of the lake. The present urban center of the Aymara region is El Alto, a 750,000-person city near the Bolivian capital La Paz. / The native language of the Aymara is also named Aymara; in addition, many Aymara speak Spanish, which is the dominant language of the countries in which they live, as a second language. This young girl is an inhabitant of the reed islands of Lake Titicaca. Located between Bolivia and Peru, Lake Titicaca is one of the most fascinating lakes in the world. Lake Titicaca is a sacred place for the Inca civilization, as the Incan mythology says that the first Inca king, Manco Capac, was born here. According to the Incan mythology, this is the place where the world was created from, when the god Viracocha came out of the lake and created the sun, the stars and the first people. • Life is difficult for the people of the Bolivian Altiplano. This Aymara mother and daughter were photographed on a steep backstreet in La Paz, the largest city in Bolivia. At 11,900 feet, La Paz is the second highest major city in the world after Lhasa, Tibet.

This is a little girl from the Lake Titicaca region in Bolivia. / Apparently children in this area develop very red cheeks because they don’t dry their faces properly after washing – and the cold wind damages the wet skin.

Reed Boat and Lookout Tower on one of the floating Uros Islands which lay within the marshy region near Puno on Lake Titicaca, Peru. The Uros Islands were built and are continutally being rebuilt using the dried local totora reed or rush. Huts and boats are built out of the same material. The Uros islanders, who are an even older civilisation than the Incas, survive by fishing, handicrafts and tourism.

Further to the Dragon Head photo I posted a little while ago, this is what the rest of the boat looks like. Most boats don’t have the “cabin” area and sail like this one. We actually took a leisurely ride in this very boat – great fun and sooooo chilled! Uros Floating Reed Islands, Lake Titicaca, Peru.

  • Uros Islands - Peru
    by Braedene

    US$3.99–US$91.20

This is one section of the floating islands on Lake Titicaca – the highest navigable lake in the world. The Quechuans ( descendants of the Incas) pull together massive chunks of reeds and create floating beds where they build their houses ( shown here) from reeds. Every year they lay down another layer of reeds as gradually the lower section becomes waterlogged . The islands last for 5 years and they start all over again. Their boats – like long boats (shown here) are also made from reeds. They are mostly fishermen but the ladies are heavily involved in tourism and make all sorts of woven goods and figurines. I have also another picture of the kitchen in one area on their floating island where it is open to the elements but they have heavy metal pots on charcoal type fires. They made us flat scones to eat – which I did with some trepidation!! But I survived!! They are a very friendly people and we went on to Amantani where I stayed the night with a family – . A wonderful and humbling experience that these people can be so happy with so little. The land in the b/g is sloping because we are on a boat moving up and down coming in ready to land . Best seen large.
