Built on the west coast of Cornwall, the remains of Tintagel Castle keep the legend of King Arthur and his knights of the round table alive today. The spectacular views and coastal walks attract tourists to the area even in late October, weather permitting.
Originally built as a small manor house in the 14th century, this building is a rare example of such an early domestic dwelling in the south west corner of England. It’s life as a post office began in the 19th century, when Sir Rowland Hill’s introduction of the Penny Postage in 1840 led to the improvement of postal services in remote country places like Tintagel. In 1892 the owner of the Old Post Office decided to sell it for redevelopment, and the General Post Office moved its business across the street. By 1895 the building had become virtually derelict and was put up for auction. In 1900 the National Trust agreed to buy the building from a Miss Johns for a nominal £200, raised by public appeal. The purchase was subject to a lease to Miss Johns for her lifetime and the building was finally vested in the Trust in 1903.
Tintagel Old Post Office is a 14th-century stone house, built to the plan of a medieval manor house, situated in Tintagel, Cornwall, United Kingdom. The house, and its surrounding cottage garden, are in the ownership of the National Trust. For 50 years in the 19th century the house was used as the district letter-receiving office and the Trust has restored it to this condition.
I used 4 of my photographs to produce this. I used Corel X3 to photoshop and the Corel airbrush to make alterations to the eyes and cat. / The location is Tintagel Castle. / I used the same photograph of Tintagel Castle for The Book of Magics.
A photograph of a waterfall at Rocky Valley. A walk along the public footpath at Rocky Valley which is situated between Boscastle and Tintagel in Cornwall, and towards the end where the stream meets the sea lies this waterfall. A careful clamber down the rocks enabled me to get the position for this shot. A slow shutter speed was used to create the flowing effect of the water.

In operation until 1861 Trewthet Mill (Bossiney, Cornwall) produced cloth and yarn for the then isoltated coastal villages of Tintagel and Boscatle. Dates carved into the Mills stonework suggest the mill came into exsistence in 1779.

You can explore the ruins on the mainland for free when the castle is shut. This shot is looking through the wall ruins towards Barras Nose.

I have just returned from a wonderful holiday. This photo was taken at Tintagel and is on the north coast of Cornwall, set high on cliffs overlooking the sea. Tintagel is the legendary site of King Arthur’s conception and birth. Historically it would appear that Tintagel was an important trading post from late Roman times until it was abandoned at the end of the 7th century. Around 1230, a castle was built at Tintagel by Richard, Earl of Cornwall and son of King Henry III. / The ruins of Tintagel are such a beautiful sight ….but ooooooh so high…I was so brave to climb that cliff….I’m not good with heights but I saw this shot on a postcard and I just HAD to get it for myself…lol. It was well worth the climb :-)) / Image taken with a Canon EOS 500D and 18-55 lens FEATURED IN ‘Dimensions’
“They found a naked child upon the sands Of dark Tintagel by the Cornish sea; And that was approven King:” / Tennyson (Idyll of the Kings) / There are many myths and legends associated with Tintagel and the surrounding area. Geoffrey of Monmouth, the King Arthur populist who lived in the 12th century was the first to connect Arthur with Tintagel in his 1136 work Historia Regum Britanniae, or History of the Kings of Britain. Monmouth cited Tintagel as the spot where 5th century King Arthur was conceived circa A.D., 480-500. Another popular myth which surrounds Tintagel is that of Merlin’s Cave which can be found below the castle and visited via the beach at low tide. It is said that Merlin lived in a cave below fortress of Tintagel while King Arthur grew up, to be his teacher Tintagel Castle is one of the most mysterious and beautiful historic sites in Britain. Situated on the west coast of Cornwall, Tintagel is built on the remains of a coastal headland which is gradually being eroded by the sea. Historians believe that it dates back to the 13th century and it has been long associated with the legend of King Arthur. From Squidoo….......
