  • Tikal National Park ~ Guatemala (2007) The Plaza Central is the most recognizable part of the park. It is situated by two impressive temples (Temple of the Gran Jaguar and Temple of the Masks). The Plaza itself was a ceremonial square and covered with four plaster floors below the grass. Rulers used to sit atop the pyramids and look down on the ceremonies being performed below.

  • Tikal National Park ~ Guatemala (2007) At 59 meters (190 feet high), Temple V is the second tallest pyramid at Tikal. Archaeologists believe it is the burial site of an unknown ruler.

  • Walking around Tikal is an amazing experience. The Mayans lived there for 1800 years and so there is a lot of history, but it is a very cool fact that only 15% of the ruins have been uncovered. When you walk around the jungle there are a lot of hills and mounds and they are all overgrown pyramids, temples and houses. A friend of mine wanted to spend the night on Temple IV but our guide said, jokingly, that it would be too spooky because it is haunted. When my mate laughed it off and said he would stay anyway, the guide stopped laughing and said “no, really, don’t ever go up there at night”. He did, however, let him stay on the temple you can see in this photo with its back to us.

  • We drove in to Guatemala, to Tikal, where the Mayan civilisation had 130 000 Mayans in this one area. Known just now is that the civilisation lived from around 700BC to about 650 AD. This is one of the 6 temples and many houses that are round the Grand Plaza. It is 47 m in height and has nine layers, which makes it stand out amongst the rest, but it is not the tallest at the Plaza as one temple is 70 m. The body of the leader Jasaw Chan K’awiil was found inside in a tomb. No one knows how or why the Mayans disappeared but there are many theories. The jaguar is the noted animal for Belize and Guatemala.
