THE SUBJECT: / A triangular shaped stone caught in glorious winter afternoon sun is transformed into a fossilised butterfly emerging from the sand. / (What is “Pietra Papilio”? Why it’s Latin for “Fossilised Butterfly” of course!) THE LOCATION: / Photographed on Shelley Beach, Port Macquarie, NSW, Australia. THE MAKING OF ‘Tidal Stones – Pietra Papilio’: / I was feeling a bit toey at home so Milady Fuji and I headed off on a tour of the local beaches to see what we could see. / The tide was out so no spectacular seascapes were forthcoming however, as is my want, I kept my eyes open and finally spotted this partly uncovered rock surrounded by the wonderful patterns in the sand made by the receding tide. / My imagination took over and I foresaw this petrified butterfly in my mind’s eye. / Fuji S9600: RAW, Macro mode, Manual settings of f/3.8 @ 1/800sec, Auto focus, ISO80, Hand held. / Lightroom 2.2 & Photoshop CS3. This landscape is a tidal creek in St. Augustine Fl, this view is from the side of a highway with cars zooming by. It is only five hundred feet from a retail shopping area.
This view of Moultrie Creek is my favorite, I pass buy it nearly everyday and like Monet will probably repaint it a different times of the day and year. The light, the tide and the changing of the season present a different landscape every day.

shot at Pine Point, on the Yorke Peninsular, in South Australia. / a handheld shot, using a Fujifilm S5500 digital camera. / Hue, saturation, contrast and brightness tampered with on finepix viewer, ‘manual adjust image quality’. I’d played with hue first to find this purplish tone, but later came back to play around with contrast, colour saturation, and brightness to end up with this depth of tone.
This is my first shot for 2010 after I headed to the waters of The Entrance up in Central Coast. I traveled 110km enjoy the good view of this place with the cold morning breeze. I used my Sigma 24-70mm lens for this shot. A glass I rarely use for landscape shoots. I applied a little touch of HDR treatment on this image to give a little emphasis on the rocky corners and slamming water.
