Ahoy! We just pushed out this morning’s release, and I have great pleasure in announcing the following bits and pieces. Boring but important things first: We need you to all go into your payment details and set your preference for the currency in which you wish to be paid. We’re giving ya’ll one week to set it, after that it’s going to be compulsory (we’ll insert a best guess for everyone) and hard to change (because our accountant complains a lot). There’s a new MyBubble Overview which now lists your groups (and the most recent thing that happened in each of them) right beside your activity. I really want to spend some more time tidying up inside MyBubble, as soon as Pete will let me—start your lobbying now! There’s a new Buy Wall Art page, which is the first of many steps we’re taking to help buyer’s find the stuff they’re looking for. Obviously there’s a T-Shirt and Greeting Card version coming ASAP. Be sure to check out the bling when clicking the “more” arrows! And finally, Group Moderators can now send a BubbleMail to all members of a group, to make group announcements a little easier. The rest of our time was spent on things that you can’t see but you’ll probably feel them over time, like making it easier for our fulfillment houses to get stuff printed and shipped faster, which is always a Good Thing™. — Justin

Greetings, I’m quite excited to announce the following updates released just a few minutes ago. Long sleeve tees A new unisex long sleeve tee style is now available for every tee design on the site (hooray!) alongside the existing short sleeve unisex and short sleeve women’s styles. They’re available in most colors, and all sizes except XXXL (sorry, they’re American Apparel’s restrictions, not ours). You can read a little more about them here, and (shameless self-promotion) you can see a preview of one of my designs here. Hopefully we’ll have some real photos of RedBubble designs in the next few days. In the meantime, here’s a photo from the AA site of a man with a strange look on his face: Perhaps he too is wondering why it took us so long to do the long sleeve tee? Buyers can choose not to remain anonymous If you’re logged in, there’s a new screen after the checkout process which asks you if it’s okay for the artist(s) to know it was you who bought your stuff. It’s completely optional (if you don’t do anything, the default behavior is still an anonymous sale), but it’s the first step towards improving the connections between the buyer and the artist. For sales where the buyer says it’s okay, the artists’ activity notice will say “You sold a [product type] of [work title] to [buyer’s display name]” with a link, which opens up the opportunity for the artist and the buyer to talk over BubbleMail, etc. Again, it’s all optional and it’s early days, but we think these connections are important. Group Moderators have a 4th optional message when rejecting works By popular request, another option has been added in to the pre-written messages when rejecting a work from a group: “We think the work may be better suited to other groups. We’ll be happy to consider other works you submit to the group, provided they meet the guidelines and content requirements for inclusion”. Password resets It happens to the best of us! We removed a few hurdles from the process of trying to reset your password when your memory fails you. You’re still on your own if you forget a birthday or a wedding anniversary of course. Everyone’s watching RedBubble We’ve added the RedBubble user to everyone’s watchlist (and to new accounts by default), so that you can keep up with the announcements and important things on the site (like this announcement). We think it’s also important to introduce new users to the watchlist functionality. If it annoys you, remove “RedBubble” from your watchlist just like you’d remove other annoying people! Font Change We’ve had to change the font we use on the greeting cards, laminated and mounted prints (it’s now Helvetica). The old font didn’t have a full character set, so special characters in artists’ names and/or work titles were printing horribly. Besides, Helvetica is the best font ever. There’s even a film about it. Upload Reliability We’ve improved the reliability of file uploads in some versions of IE6 dramatically. Thanks to the community for helping us test this and to Ben for retaining far too much information in his brain about browser incompatibilities from almost 10 years ago. Update: Changed the tee image to one of the “approved for use” images that AA provides us with. The text still works, sort-of! — Justin

  • A heads up for group owners and moderators

We normally don’t pre-announce features, but this Thursday we’re releasing two things for the Groups that probably warrant a few days advanced notice to keep the group owners and moderators well-informed. There’ll be no such thing as a ‘Group Owner’ We see the groups as mini-communities. The idea that a community is owned by an individual leaves a bad taste in our mouths. It’s bugged us ever since we launched groups, so we’re correcting it. This Thursday when we release, all of the owner’s “super powers” (editing a group, adding new moderators, editing forums, etc) will be handed over to all the moderators in the group, and the owner will simply become one of the moderators. This isn’t to say that the group owners have been evil or bad, it’s just the idea of an owner that we hate. While we’re at it, the other thing that’s bugged us about groups is the idea of a Moderator. Great communities are led by example, so we’re going to call them Leaders. Groups will be able to set limits for each type of work For each type of work (images, clothing, writing, journals) the group leaders will be able to set a different limit, from none to unlimited and anywhere in between. For example, the Six Word Stories group will only allow written works, and the Agent Provocateur group may choose to only accept clothing works and maybe journal entries. The reason we’re pre-announcing this is because we’re going to take any existing “total works” limit in the groups, and apply it to each type of work. If your group had a limit of 4 works, it’ll now be a limit of 4 images, 4 journals, 4 clothing designs and 4 written works. So now might be a good time for group leaders to have a think about what their group needs, and make the changes after we release on Thursday. — Justin

Hello hello! I’m very excited to announce the following features we just rolled out, thanks to the hard work of our wonderful team of fine people. Drum roll please… Sales history You asked for it, we gave it to you (eventually!). Artists now have access to a nice table of every sale you’ve made, when, etc. At this stage it’s only a sales history and doesn’t include the payments we’ve sent you yet, but it will. You can access this by going to MyBubble > Account and clicking on “view all your sales” from the menu on the left, or click this link if you’re logged in. Group leaders & finer control over group upload limits As previously discussed, we’ve made group owners and group moderators the same thing, with the same powers, and we’re now calling these wonderful people leaders instead of moderators. We’ve also added finer control of the group limits. For each type of work we have (writing, clothing, image and journal) the group leaders can set the limit to “none”, “some” (a number) or “unlimited”. Username recovery If you forget your username (or password) it’s really easy to figure it all out simply by typing in your email address. It’s all linked up from the login screen if you ever need it. If nothing else, it should make Hop’s life a whole lot easier answering support questions! Oh, and that paragraph bug You know how everyone puts periods and other characters in their work descriptions to force paragraphs and blank lines on the main work screen? No more! It was a tiny bug, and everything should be fine now. Please feel free to update all your descriptions to make the site 2% more pleasant to look at! Et cetera There’s also the usual bugs, tweaks, massages and little things we’ll let you find for yourselves too. Keep an eye out for an In The Moment update in the next day or so. — Justin

Greetings Bubbleers! This week, we’ve been “going nuts” trying to get some of our new product ideas finished, and I’m very pleased to announce the following updates… Matted Prints Artists can now create matted prints of their images. This is a totally new product which we’ve been talking about for a few weeks, and we’re really happy with it. It’s a top-notch photographic print sandwiched in between two pieces of matte board and we’re doing relative scaling of the images inside the 10×15” print area. The best thing about these is that the board is cut to the same 16×20” for every print, which means lots of different shape images can look “even” when placed on the wall next to each other. If your existing images are already available as a Laminated Prints (and they’re of sufficient quality) we’ve automatically made them available as a matted print, so you don’t have to do anything. We’re starting with just one size and just a few matte colors because we want to get this out there as fast as possible, but if they sell well we have much more planned. Reusable Frames We’ve also launched a reusable frame, which is perfectly for exhibiting one of our new matted prints, allowing you to buy one nice frame and exhibit different art work in it over time. They’re available as a flat frame only for the moment, but they’re available in the same five beautiful solid timber colors as our regular frames, and you can choose to place the perspex either in front or behind the image (if you don’t like the glare) keeping every one happy. Again, we have plans for more colors, sizes and frame styles, but we’re seeing how these go first. Some other stuff We’re still chipping away at some shipping integration and order tracking, squashing bugs and all that other fun stuff too.

Hello! We’ve been busily chipping away on a bunch of big stuff (like a new search engine, UPS integration, order tracking and the new products), but there’s also some goodies that you can play with today! Here’s the highlights: V-Neck Tees Just like the long-sleeve tees we released a few weeks back, we’ve automatically made every tee design available as a V-neck. They’re the same sizing as our unisex short-sleeve tees, which means they suit both guys and girls, they’re available in most colors and all sizes except 2XL & 3XL (sorry, they don’t make ‘em). We’re showing them on a girl, but they suit guys too (we had to choose one or the other for now). Because of the lower neck line, the designs are pushed further down the garment, which means not every design will look perfect, but we’re working on that (aren’t we always?). I absolutely love the Fireworks design by anartistic, and here it is on a v-neck. More in depth, exciting tee related news, complete with ‘hilarious’ pictures, can be found here Reusable Frames We’ve made the buying interface for the reusable frames a bit better (we ran out of time last week), and we subtly suggest that people with a matted print in their cart might also want to buy a frame. Etc As usual, there’s heap of bug fixes and other little tweaks for you to discover for yourself. Next? I’d love to say next week is going to be more exciting, but we need to keep chipping away at the bugs and bigger / more difficult stuff first, so that we can get to the exciting new products and gadgets. I’m sure you understand… — Justin

While your are enjoying a nice Easter break here is a quick peak inside the Bubble last Thursday (Melbourne time). Its 8 am and the Board has its monthly meeting. The Board is Peter and Martin and on the phone is Simon Baker who is calling in from lovely London (Simon is the Managing Director of Australia’s premier online realestate site – realestate.com.au). Peter is dressed in his usual snappy bike attire (giving both the Bubble and bike attire a bad name). Martin still has that soft post meditative glow about him – he will gradually lose this during the day. 10am and the whole team convenes for show and tell. We all get together including Grant (who is on the phone from Perth) and David who is using the phone to keep his hands warm in Halfax (we call him every few days to make sure he hasn’t gone into hibernation). Our somewhat less than hirsute, tech leader Justin is leading off with the tech review. The whole team gets to complain about new features before you all do. Everybody will get their turn to show what they have done for the week (some choose to fake heart attacks if they have been less productive than they felt was needed). Finally (and it is now 11am) the whole team is hard at work trying to clean up the release so it is presentable for showing to you all. You will notice there is a LOT of art of various sorts about the place. We found it was much cheaper to put art on the walls than to have big offices with comfy chairs and a soccer table. The release will be out by about 2am GMT (or noon Melbourne time). There is then (normally) a bit of a scramble with bug cleaning up and next week is planned. That is Jo and Hop staring at the printer like it held the secret to life. Truth is that they needed some excuse to get in the photo as their chairs were off-screen. Happy Easter to everybody. Martin

Hello Bubbleers, we’re all back at work finally (even if some of us forgot we were supposed to be taking a break!), and we’ve just pushed out the latest release. Ben had the worst job this week for sure, spending most of the week fixing a heap of display bugs in IE6! Behind the scenes we’re digging our way through a revamped community overview page, redesigned activity email, the new search engine and putting the limited edition organic tee on sale. What I can show you is a sneak peek at what the new activity email is going to look like: — Justin (& every one else)

The Logo As you’ll remember from this we set Xavier the challenge of redesigning the logo on pain of biscuit deprivation. However the sneaky man went vegan at about the same time just to thwart us. But he still came through with the goods, which now adorn the top of every page for a day or two. I, for one, think it reeks of awesomeness. And all he used were these, in fact, only about two of these: And to show that he’s not wasteful, after the shoot, he then proceeded to make two huge toasted sandwiches, and promptly ate the logo: He was extremely encouraged by all of your support, and thanks you. However at the time of going to press no one could comment on whether he had scrubbed his feet or not. The Competition In other news, the new Compassion competition (and group) has been launched, and Gaia has been closed. Other things We didn’t quite finish the other big things we were working on this week, but we’ll have a special RedBubble Wednesday this week (due to Anzac day). Reminders There is only one week left before this awesome t-shirt concept disappears forever, go improve your wardrobe. Your faithful reporters Charles Foster Kane & Justin

Hello hello! We’ve just rolled out this weeks release, the highlights include: A real credit card system / You can now pay for stuff with a credit card without having to use PayPal—you can do it all without leaving RedBubble. Previously, this was only available as an option for orders in Australian dollars. PayPal is still an option, of course. Clear GIFs over the larger images / By popular demand! If you really want to discourage people from downloading the larger versions of your images, there’s an option in your profile to do so. Please understand it’s impossible to prevent downloading of images displayed on web pages (they can still do a screen capture, for example), but activitating this feature will make it more difficult. Interesting nerdy sidenote: GIF is pronounced “JIFF”. The pre-loading images experiment / After the main art & clothing gallery pages load, we’re pre-loading the images for the next page in the background, so that when you click “next” the page should load much faster for most people. It’s an experiment, but it seems to be working really well so far. The activity footer experiment / In another experiment, we’re putting the two most recent activity events down above the footer. The theory is that users might accidentally discover new stuff that they may not have found any other way, and we’ll see how that goes. Featured and recent work in the group home pages / We’re showing two rows of both now, instead of one or the other. Also / There’s the usual bug fixes, tweaks, etc. We know we’re a little behind on launching of new groups that have been proposed—please be patient! Enjoy! — Justin & Co

Hello Bubbleers. Has it been two weeks already? We’ve been hard at work on many wonderful things which are just gonna take some time, but we do have some goodies that were ready to release today. Drum roll please… New Framed Print Previews Over the next few hours we’ll rolling out new product previews for our framed prints. They look amazing if I do say so myself, but it’ll take a few hours for them to spread out over the entire site, so here’s an example from the beautiful portfolio of TalBright: New Tee Previews They’re not quite as amazing as the frames admittedly, but we’re also rolling out new tee previews over the next few hours, with pretty accurate illustrations of each style, more room for bigger previews, etc. We were also “this close” to having an accurate preview of each garment size as well, but they’ll have to wait a little bit. Here’s an example of a Girly Short Sleeve design by dkcazaly: You might notice some weird stretching of designs while we roll these out, but it’ll be worth it! The reason behind this change is that we want to do some pretty interesting stuff with the tees, like printing on the back, or positioning the design in the bottom corner, etc, and a nice flat realistic illustration of the garment will make this much much easier. Beta Testing Challenges The Challenge Café group is graciously helping us over the next few weeks by testing out the new challenge functionality. I’ll post some more about challenges in the next day or so once we’re set-up. They’re not-quite-done, but there’s some pretty cool stuff in there, like the new “work selector” which lets you enter a work into the challenge from the challenge page in the group rather than from inside MyBubble (which we’ll obviously be rolling out to other places, like groups, ASAP). Order By Phone in Australia We’re also experimenting with the idea of “order by phone”, starting with Australia. Copyright IPTC Data We’re also in the process of rolling out copyright notices embedded in the IPTC meta data of the images. It’ll take a few hours to spread out across the site, but every main, zoom and product preview image (all the big ones) will soon contain the copyright data. There’s no setting or preference, we just do it. There’s a swag of bug fixes and little things too, so enjoy! — Justin

Hello hello, welcome to another RedBubble Thursday. Here’s an update on what’s been released, what’s coming up and what’s going on: Activity Monitor This is still very much a work in progress, so I probably should give you some background information. We think the Activity Monitor is really important to the future of RedBubble. As the site grows, we think it’s going to be more and more important that content comes to you instead of you having to find the content. This means more types of activity events will be sent to you, which also means you’ll probably want to customize your monitor, focusing on the information you want, and ignoring the stuff you don’t need. So we’ve split the Activity Monitor into two groups: “Favorite Feeds”, which will be shown by default “Other Feeds”, for the stuff that you don’t care about too much, but might want to check out from time to time You can move the feeds between the two groups to find the right balance of information for you. Here’s a quick screen shot: It might seem a little overkill right now, but as we add in more and more feeds, I think it’s going to make a huge difference. We’ll also make it easier to organize the feeds (soon-ish) with drag-n-drop, etc. 2009 Calendars We’ve also rolled out a new 2009 Calendar design (all calendars have been automatically updated). Here’s a preview of the cover, February and the new back cover from one of John’s Calendars calendars : They’re still self-purchase only at this stage (which means they can’t be purchased by the general public), but we’ll try and get to that really soon! Pete says “if we sell more than a hundred in June, I’ll buy John a beer”. We think this should be extended to all staff and apply to each batch of 100 calendars, so please, go and buy lots of calendars to keep us all well-hydrated! The Bubble Sites Beta Continues We’ll be inviting a few more testers today, and we’ve made some improvements to the product menu design: The Challenges Beta Continues The Challenge Café Group have been helping us beta test the new challenges interface. It’s going really well, and we’ll probably open up the testing to a few more groups in a week or two after we polish some edges. And… Sets Are Coming Soon! I’m usually really nervous about pre-announcing features, but the #1 feature request right now is sets—the ability to organize or group your work into smaller ‘sets’ or ‘collections’ or ‘folders’ or something. This has been amplified even more now that we’re beta testing the new Bubblesites. We’re still at least a month (or even two) away from releasing them, but I wanted to let you all know that we’re listening, working on it, and really want to get them out ASAP. Etc There’s also the usual swag of bug fixes, tweaks and little things that I’ll let you discover for yourselves! — Justin & all these wonderful people

This week has been a relatively short one in RedBubble land due to a public holiday, and various staff out of the office. However we still have a few new things now up on the site. The old ‘overview’ page in mybubble is now gone, and replaced with the new-look activity monitor. We have added some new activity types here from the ongoing challenges beta which will help you stay on top of what challenges are happening within your groups. The list of all your groups can still be found via the groups tab in ‘mybubble’. The challenges beta has been expanded to more groups. Challenges can now be found in Challenge Cafe, Painters in Modern Times, Melbourne & Victoria, / Promote Each Other, A Photographer’s Craft, and Short Stories. Also a reminder from last week that calendars have all now been updated to a new 2009 design. So if you haven’t already, you can get cracking and make some new funky calendars from your art in mybubble/calendars. - John

It’s that time of the week again already, and this week there are two important additions to the site today. Gaia, the book, is now on sale. It looks fantastic, get your copy from the RedBubbble Store. For more information, and a list of those published, please see this post. Even bigger news is that today we have launched a new take on RedBubble’s continued exploration of New Art. We see this art as a move away from art bestowed upon us to art that ultimately embraces all of us as co-equals in its creation and interpretation. The publications ‘In the Moment’ and ‘Gaia’ were part of this exploration. The new work ‘PAX’ is an online Mosaic of 16,384 images from RedBubble artists that aims for a collective beauty that is no greater than any single one of its components. It is an art work that is complete on the Web, fully harnessing the power and potential of this medium in its creation and in its display. Enjoy! - Pilgrim

Did you know there are 1.6 million inventions under active patent in the United States? / Did you know RedBubble makes you smarter? This week on the bubble we’ve made a few tweaks to mybubble, adding back in some of the links that went missing when we lost the overview page and generally making it a bit friendlier. If you’re participating in any of the beta challenges you’ll notice some more changes – the biggest of which is that there is now separate entry and voting periods to make things a bit fairer. Justin has been working hard this week figuring out a final end point for challenges so that hopefully we’ll be able to release them site wide soon. And in case you missed it earlier in the week, there’s now a pretty T-Shirt Mosaic that looks like an iron for you to play with. In fact I might go and do just that now. - Xavier

Hello, / We’ve released some new stuff this week Look! Site activity is different Observe! Challenges are different Notice! Bubble Sites are different Challenges are pretty much ready to go site wide, we reckon. Bubble Sites are getting another round of love this week but they’re getting close as well. Greetings! Is it Thursday already? We’ve just pushed out this morning’s release, which includes heaps of updates to the BubbleSites: The first steps towards “themes” — you can choose between black, white and beige backgrounds, with everything else on the screen adjusted to suit. Yes, of course there’s more to come, but we’re happy to say that the foundations are in place, so you can start making the site “yours”. More navigation has been added too, making it easier for people to move around. And some other refinements which you’ll probably figure out for yourselves, like some tweaks to the product config menu. We’ve also been investing quite heavily in search engine advertising campaigns and landing pages, the obvious aim being to boost sales and drive more traffic to the site. It’s early days, but we’re seeing some great results and we think this is going to make a huge difference long term. Outside the bubble, 45 bubblers are currently exhibiting their work to over 5000 people a day at one of Melbourne’s biggest landmarks, the Rialto Towers. Paul Villani was the brains behind this fantastic idea which has given the artworks of many Melbourne and interstate artists exposure like never before. The exhibition is housed in the lush foyer of this 55 story business and tourist centre and is open until August 15th. This mammoth project was accomplished by a small team of 3 friends over a handful of coffees. If you’re interested in doing something similar in your city and don’t know where to start, feel free to drop one of the organizers a line. What else? Oh yeah, it’s been an interesting time in the land of T-Shirts. The so-called “Great Tee Disaster” printing delays have kept people like Ed awake for an unhealthy number of hours, but we’ve been in contact with the buyers that have been affected and we believe everything will be under control very soon. And finally, Hop has been home sick for a few days, so be extra nice to him when sending emails to support! Here’s an artist’s impression: — Justin

Hello Bubblers! We’ve just pushed out this week’s release, which is jam-packed with some lovely updates and improvements. The BubbleSites are continuing to be tweaked, massaged and improved (the galleries show the work in it’s original aspect ratio instead of cropped, heaps of UI polish, a “buy now” button in addition to the “add to cart” button, and the layout should jump around a whole lot less during page load). There’s a new activity monitor filter “favorites of your watchlist”—it’s like a mini recommendation system really, and part of our never ending quest to help you discover new work and new artists. We’ve also been working on a system for you to apply for a new group. We’ll slowly release it out to the massive backlog of people waiting for groups (first come, first served), then make it all public once we’re sure it’s ready for prime time (probably a week or two). The next round of tweaks to the challenges system will be here soon, I promise! What else? This week it was Xavier’s turn to be sick. Who will be next? Why don’t we have a cure for the common cold yet? I hope you all have a great week! — Justin

Hello Bubblettes and Bubbleers! We’ve just pushed out this morning’s release, jam-packed with even more wonderfulness (yes, I’m making up new words today). Here’s the highlights: Group Applications are open to everyone. Woo! After a great soft-launch last week, we’ve made some small changes and opened up the group application process to everyone. You can get started here, but please take some time to follow the instructions. For future reference, you can find the link at the bottom of the main groups page. There’s a new Challenge Voting Interface. We’re getting closer and closer! It looks much nicer with animations and all that, but I think the most important change is that you can now go backwards and forwards through all the entries (the number one request!) and change your votes (you can remove a vote). We’re going to be doing a little bit more work refining this over the next week or two, then we’ll be opening up the challenge stuff to all groups. You can now rename your sets in your BubbleSite. The only set you can’t rename (yet) is the Featured set, but I’m told that will happen soon. There’s some new activity events too. In the next hour or two we’ll be rolling out two new types of events — featured work and featured people in your groups. Until next time! / — Justin & Co.

This was taken of the rain coming down on the balcony balustrade with the clouds in the background. I know that there are lots of amazing captures of splashes here on RB but this image really wasn’t about the splash, to me, it was more about the capture of morning rain.
