Life is a blank canvas. Tonight… this is how I colour mine. Tulips on Table Cape
Well this is the shot that made it into the 2008 channel ten weather calendar, so I’m pretty proud of that.Getting this into the calendar was my first… ‘public’ recognition of my work so this is a pretty special shot to me. it is lightning over Adelaide looking down from Mount Osmond. It was taken in December 2006 and featured on the following nights news broadcast.
A gustfront moving over Mt Walsh at sunset.
Featured in National Parks of the World – Dec 2008. Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park, Northern Territory, Australia. Captured today… I jumped in my trusty old Toyota Landcruiser (Barry) and headed bush to chase this spectacular storm front. It was such an exhilarating adventure! We have now enjoyed several weeks of ongoing storm activity here in the desert. Today’s wild and rainy storms began at around eight this morning. Throughout the day, storm front after storm front has rolled over the desert, bringing with them heavy rain and exhilarating electrical activity. We have endured hail today, strong winds and even a lightning strike which sparked a small blaze in the National Park. And all of these incredible storm sessions were punctuated by bright sunshine and warm temperatures. Wow, I am thoroughly exhausted from following the weather today. I think I have storm-photographing-fatigue. / (A new member of the Elite Storm Chaser Squadron…) Uluru, Central Australia. Monday 24th November 2008. [Creative Effects: Contrast and brightness adjustments, Omni spotlight with Photoshop]
A moment of youthful exuberance.
The thunderstorm in this photograph was taken on the top-end wetlands late in the build up season…only weeks before this area was a dustbowl, yet weeks later it becomes a floodplain ! As the storm surged across the lush plains it dumped heavy rain and some shortlived reprieving cool winds. / / EOS A2, Fuji Velvia 50. / ©T.Middleton2007 —-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—— / / / / see more of my weather related photography by clicking on the preview image below. / / / /

When the thunder comes and you are standing at 12,000 feet, this is probably the last place you want to be. So when the thunder comes and you are the highest object in the Colorado Rockies….run!!! Lightning strikes kill people in the high country every year and needles to say I pretty much high tailed it after shooting this, back to the car as quick as I could. Loveland Pass is a Colorado landmark, and looking here you look out over the Continental Divide. It is the highest mountain Pass in the United States to be plowed and stayed open year around, as trucks carrying hazardous chemicals must cross this way instead of using the Eisenhower Tunnel. I went ahead and decided to process this in HDR using Photomatix and final output through PS CS2, the reason for the HDR was to catch the dynamic light (which seems like I am always chasing) and the drama in the clouds with the approaching thunderstorm. LucisArt used for final detail work. What a sight this was, the sky was burning orange! I love how the city looks so small compared to that enormous storm cloud… this was taken at ascot, looking over Brisbane 17.05.08 at 4:55 pm just as the sun was setting… This storm was incredible to watch, until i had to run back to the car because the wind was going to pick me and my camera up + within minutes the city wasn’t visible anymore…
This is for Mike, one of the weather guys on the Cocos Islands. Everyday we would ask him what the forecast was, and everyday he would reply “Mostly fine, chance of a shower”! I guess this was the “chance of a shower” bit! Mike is a great guy with lots of wonderful stories from his time spent living all around Australia. Lightning striking in the mountains behind a home in the Arizona desert.
Standing here watching these huge waves crashing in through these giant cliffs was an amazing experience, the power and relentless pounding was ferocious but also incredibly hypnotic, I almost felt like I was being pulled in despite the fact that we were safely away from the real action. In the warm summer night, I watched this amazing dry storm cell pass over me from the West. It looked like it was going to cross right over top of me – so I made an escape plan (run like hell!) But in the end, it turned north and head away from me – not before I captured this. I saw a picture in a magazine of two girls riding their horses on the beach. I was inspired by the power and movement of the pic and wanted to draw it. So, here is the finished result. / Pastel painting on grey pastel paper. Size – 48cm x 68cm. 2007. Original for sale.
During this past week, unimaginable waves came crashing into the north shores of the Hawaiian islands. The surf was windy, and messy, and disorganized—not ridable for the great watermen of Hawaii. I happened to be in Sunset Beach, Oahu during the storm, and the sun only peeked through the clouds a couple of times, briefly. I was waiting. Here is my image.
