  • The Thistle – The Flower of Scotland. The story goes the English were planning to attack a Scottish camp at night. They started to advance on the sleeping Scots but one of the Englishmen crawled into a Thistle and gave out a yell thus alerting the Scots to the coming attack. The Scots managed to gather their wits about them and fend of the attack. From that moment onwards the Thistle has been the national flower.

  • A big thank you to the ever so talented writer Nicole Ryan for her writing. Her delightful words go with these images so nicely. / An itch in time / There were parts of me / she could never touch / those pieces / he would never rush / slow growing / behind fences / and faces / different times / small spaces / our places; filled with / lucid lines / dreams of sensored spines / and yesterdays that lingered. / The edges were laced / with prickly hearts / sad endings / powdered darts / simple starts / enough to keep it safe / enough to chew and waste / those pieces of ourselves / that were better. / You never wondered / I never counted / the amount of times that thistle stung / It doesn’t grow there anymore / we wouldn’t know where to explore / these things don’t exist / in my skin. / We burnt it all with yesterday. / © ryan / These three images were shot on transparency film and the transparencies were manipulated further using a Daylab printer and Polaroid pull apart film where the film is pulled apart before a positive can be processed. The dyes remaining on the Polaroid film were then transferred by rolling onto blotting paper. This is a very unique technique as you will never be able to reproduce the same image twice. There will always be a different amount of dye remaining on the film each time you do it making each image different from the last. They are presented here as a series. / More works created using this technique can be found here

  • I think this one makes me smile.. I saw it while I was mowing down the road.. Makes the yard look better on approach. Anyway.. I have always liked these and never got the DOF I wanted hand held.. LOL.. So I made it a point to catch some late light since it was on the east side and would catch the late light. I am happy with this.. I am sure there are so many better captures out there..But this one I wanted to share with my new friends at RB.. And ones to come.. Enjoy Give A Friend A Long Time No See Card

  • This flower’s Latin name is Echinpos ritro Veitch’s Blue, it’s about 1 inch across. I’m very interested in the Veitch family. They were a family of 5 generations of horticulturists and were the first nursery to send out their own plant hunters in the 1840s. Many new plants were introduced to science but also to ordinary gardeners. / They had a large nursery in Exeter UK and my home is built in the grounds. There was also a large and grand nursery in Chelsea, London and from here Sir Harry Veitch helped set up the Royal Horticultural Society’s Chelsea Flower Show. 15.08.09 Featured in Rxtreme Close ups group / Thank you so much! 24.11.2009 986 views 24.11.2009 Featured in 1:1 Macro Photography group / Thank you!

  • This is a shot of my beautiful dandelion. I sprayed it with water to enhance its appearance. I wanted to show the detail in this amazing weed which we don’t even cast a second glance at. I used my Kodak Z8612IS camera for the original shot. Thanks for visiting, cheers- Valerie /

  • Stormy as heck.. Snow blowing the winds at 30mph and gusty.. This is what I was pondering.. Hope you find some joy in its capture.. / Chuck.. These plants are actually called Teasels The Simple Way

  • Late evening sunset near Cowell on the Eyre Peninsula – South Australia. The highest thing on the road side where a small bunch of thistle heads that looked liked small palm trees sitting up into the sky. Canon 400D, 18-55 with CIR Polarising filter.

  • Beauty Of A Thorn This well-known thistle is a true nightmare to all the local farmers. At one point I think there was even a law passed saying that people could be fined if it was found growing unchecked on their property. / It is such an invasive plant that it will take over an entire pasture or field, and farm animals won’t/can’t eat it, and it’s a real problem in the hay. / On the other hand, its a blessing for the many butterflies that migrate through this area, and it provides much-needed food and energy for the pretty little creatures that have such long flights ahead of them, or maybe are just at the end of their life spans. / I have also noticed that hummingbirds love it as well. Being a photographer, I do love its exotic blooms and the many photo opportunities it provides. / The sad but true thing is, the only way to control it is to destroy it completely! It’s amazing that something so beautiful and so useful for the nectar lovers, is also such a thorn in the side for the farmers. / Photo taken along a road side in NW Arkansas, USA.
