  • This is a limited edition print run,

  • Rock formations on Sulphide deposits…Pool of Champagne at Wai-O-Tapu Thermal Reserve, between Rotorua and Taupo, Waikato District (North Island) NZ. Lucky you cannot smell the photo…!!

  • I just recently made a trip to Yellowstone and this pool is among the most famous of the thermal features. It had been damaged by people throwing coins into it for years and that metal altered the chemistry in the water and changed the color of the pool to what you see here today.

  • The Grand Prismatic Spring in Yellowstone National Park. Focused on a portion of it to contrast the red and the blue.

  • This is another shot from Zebedee Springs at El Questro in the Kimberley. The thermal springs are just lovely, both for the scenery and for a warm dip! To sit and soak in these warm springs is a treat indeed and a welcome break from the red dust of the Kimberley.

  • Taken at the thermal pools at Rotorua, New Zealand, with a title inspired by the wit of my girlfriend. It might look all magical and mystical with the steam rising from the mud pools, but my god – it smelled so bad there. It’s all sulphuric activity, so the smell of eggs was so strong it made my head pound. A great experience though, and definitely one I’d recommend to anyone going near Rotorua.

  • Wai-O-Tapu (Māori for “Sacred Waters”) is an active geothermal area just north of the Reporoa caldera in New Zealand’s Taupo Volcanic Zone. Here the lake is formed by the surfacing of one of the largest hot springs in the area. It is roughly circular with a diameter of 65 m and a depth of 62 m. The surface temperature of the water is 74 °C and bubbles of carbon dioxide can be seen continuously rising to the surface, giving the pool its name. The pool’s distinctive orange edge is caused by the minerals orpiment and realgar, both sulphides of arsenic. / / / EOS A2, Fuji Velvia 50. / ©T.Middleton2008 —-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—— / / / see more photographic works from New Zealand by clicking on the preview below

  • There has been one sale of this image. In November 2008 this image was featured in the group, Buyers R Us. In February 2009, this image placed third in the U.S. Parks Wildlife Shots challenge hosted by the AMERICA’s National Parks and WILDLIFE Habitat group. A thousand Yellowstone wonders are calling, ‘Look up and down and round about you! John Muir – 1898 The temperatures were in the single digits on this cold, snowy January morning at West Thumb Geyser Basin, which is one of the smallest geyser basins in Yellowstone. A incredibly scenic area along the shore of Yellowstone Lake, West Thumb only has a small amount of geyser activity. However, the basin more than makes up for it with its diversity. Despite its small size, it has paint/mud pots, hot springs, pools, lake shore geysers, and fumaroles. Fumaroles are small openings that release steam and other gasses. You can see in the foreground the muddy, soupy waters inundating the paint pots. The white area beyond the tree line in the right hand side of the photograph is Yellowstone Lake. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ Please don’t copy or download this image. • This is an abstract image taken at the edge of a thermal spring in the West Thumb geyser basin in Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming. While the image appears to not contain any living thing, the colors themselves are in fact a product of the microscopic organisms called Thermophiles which thrive at extremely high temperatures. When visiting Yellowstone, you will see different veins of colors surrounding the fumaroles, geysers and thermal pools. The various colors in these mats are different types of Thermophiles which thrive at specific temperatures or have preferences for alkaline, acidic, or sulphiric enviroments. The enviroment determines the type of Thermophile that lives there and this diversity creates the colors you see. The color in this image is exactly as it was taken by my camera. It is not a macro image. At the top right, the turquoise color is the very edge of the thermal pool, the white border is mineral deposits and the brown and yellow and orange colors are the Thermophile living in a mat surrounding the pool. / This image has sold as a laminated print and a matted print 3 times through RedBubble. /

  • The English meaning of “Wai-O-Tapu” / A Wonderland of Stunning Geothermal Activity. / Located 27 kilometres (20 minutes drive) south of Rotorua on SH5, the Visitor Centre provides the gateway to New Zealand’s most colourful natural volcanic environment.

  • Series: New Zealand White Island, Bay of Plenty, New Zealand Test your senses; bright yellows, pungeant smells that make your nose crinkle in disgust and force you to reach for your gas mask. Constant hissing and burping. Softly floating ash. Loud rumblings from the bowels of the earth. It’s pretty scary stuff! The only live marine volcano and the largest volcanic structure in NZ…...White Island is 70% undersea! She floats 48 kms out, in the beautiful Bay of Plenty. About 150,000 years old and built by continuous volcanic activity. Today, this old girl’s activity is constantly monitored by the Institute of Geological and Nuclear Sciences (IGNS). When we visited the IGNS helicopter flew in and landed. The doors flung out and people in strange suits exploded from within. They ran to their places on top of the crater and started to work, concentrating hard on their tasks. We watched, intently, for about an hour. Their concentration was so intence, I doubt they even knew we were there. They performed with precision – it’s the closest I’ll ever come to a moon landing! The island is currently on a level 1 alert; she’s always active and constantly spewing forth steam, sulphur and lots of other volcanic “stuff”. At her heart, she has a deep, steaming lake. She takes pride of place at the tip of NZs “chain of fire”; a 250 km long chain of highly active volcano’s extending from her (White Island), to Ruapehu in the centre of the north Island. A walk on her shores is indeed a walk on the wild side.

  • The Blue Lagoon geothermal spa in Iceland.

  • This is a geeky 80’s design created for the Earth Hour Challenge. / / If you understand it then it means you’re old enough to be a fair contributor to the world energy problem and an equal part of the solution. / / But what is the solution? / / Well it’s clear to me that not just one but a whole range of newer, greener, renewable energy sources will save the day and I believe that people like you and me should be given the option to choose between them on our power bill. Whether they be nuclear, solar, geo-thermal, nano tubes and so on. / / Freedom of choice is what we want. Which is in fact a lyric from that crazy 80’s pop rock band, Devo. / / The red things are the hats Devo alway wear which they call “Energy Domes”, claiming they can actually harvest energy from your own head. / / Now that’s a solution I’d really like to see. / / *This is my first attempt at using Adobe Illustrator so all comments and critiques are very welcome. / / / / /

  • Featured in Deer Me!!! – Aug 13th, 2009 Deer in Yellowstone. Waking up early always pays off in Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming, USA. / West Thumb is among the most scenic of the park’s geyser basins but it’s also the smallest. For its size, however, West Thumb posseses a whole range of features including hot springs, pools, mud pots, fumaroles and geysers. Herds of elk, mule deer, even moose and bears frequent the area within easy observation distance. Canon XSi with 18-55mm lens, f/8, 1/640sec, ISO-200.

  • Yellowstone National Park, USA. / I think maybe that when you visit Yellowstone, it feels like you are on another planet, nothing seems for real ! / The colours and ‘scapes are outlandish, like Mother Nature flipped out ! Weird and wonderful ! / It can be difficult to photograph – the wind was blowing the hot steam towards me very often, fogging up the lens, making everything very wet, not good with those electronics ! / ( I was told that the moisture from the steam can actually etch the lens, so be warned !) / The other problem is folk passing by making the boardwalk bounce around, shaking the tripod…......LOL !! / Fall is a great time to visit, a bit crowded, but those colours really zing out, and the steam is intensified by the cold Autumn air. / Oh to be there in Winter….............. Shot on my Canon EOS 40D, hand held, f13, 1/90 sec, at 49mm, iso 100, auto wb, polarising filter, RAW file, processed in PS CS3, levels/curves, selective colour adjustments, finished with LAB colour and Intellisharpen. • My latest photo collage – number 8. It has been inspired by the lyrics to the song ‘At the Bottom of the Sea’ by The Thermals. I’ve used lots of my own pictures and textures, including: - 2 pictures of the sea, both from the Suffolk coast, / - a picture of part of the Collosseum in Rome, / - a picture of some moss/clay soil on the Devil’s Dyke in Reach, Cambridgeshire, and the following textures from kind people on DeviantArt: - “Buzillo Grunge Textures”: http://buzillo-stock.deviantart.com/art/grunge-textures-01-117072744 / - “Absynthium Stock Flame Textures”: http://absinthyium-stock.deviantart.com/art/Flame-Texture-Pack-01-12872159 / - “Freaky665 Victorian Grunge”: http://freaky665.deviantart.com/art/Victorian-grunge-texture-pack-125784217 The jellyfish has been hand painted, and, although it’s mostly anatomically correct, I’ve taken artistic license with it’s colour. This particular jellyfish isn’t normally red, but it works better with the rest of the collages and as they’re all going to be used in the same calendar…. The bubbles have also been hand painted. See the detailed jellyfish on my blog The image will be available on my RedBubble and “DeviantArt”: http://magpiemagic.deviantart.com/pages as a print (and in various other forms) plus it will also be included in my soon to be released ‘Soulscapes’ calendar on Redbubble. I’ll announce it here when it’s ready. :-)

  • Another image from Yellowstone National Park , Wyoming, on our holiday from last Autumn. (2008) / West Thumb Geyser basin is on the shores of Yellowstone Lake, and is a kaleidoscope of colours, like Mother Nature went crazy with Photoshop !! Boardwalks go in various directions, and it is a hard choice, which way shall I go ??!! I chose to ‘follow the light’ / and Mother Nature gave me a helping hand with a sky straight from my dreams ! / I hope you enjoy this one !
