As I am practically brand new to design and photography, I want to play a game and get the RedBubble community involved. It is fairly simple and the reason behind it is to challenge my creativity and develop my skills. I would like people to post a comment with a word, concept, or theme… from A to Z (the alphabet) and I will challenge myself to create a piece of wall art, and t-shirt design for each posted comment. All work will be tagged a2z along with the corresponding topic and letter of the alphabet for an easy search function. Feel free to join in the fun… so what will A be?
thank you John Douglas and butchart !

My photographic interests have broadened quite a bit since I started on RB. Many of you joined my Watchlist when almost all my images were landscapes. I still adore doing landscapes but I’m now doing a lot more conceptual and model photography as well. Anyway what I’d like your feedback on is whether I should start a separate account for these types of shots or keep them all here? The reason for asking is both from the point of view of not wanting to alienate some people, and for marketing purposes. Personally I love viewing anything my favourite RB photographers post, but I recognise that a lot of people who are into landscapes aren’t into much else, and specifically, quite a few of these find nudes, in particular, offensive. Although I have a very different viewpoint to this one myself, I do entirely respect an individual’s right to feel this way about nudes. Specifically what is triggering this journal is that I have what I think is a beautiful, but rather overtly sensual nude series I’m working on and so I thought it was time to get your opinion. Yes I know there is the NSFW filter that those offended by such images can turn on but beyond that is the wider question for me of whether my portfolio is coming across as neither fish nor fowl – too strange or explicit for the landscape-only people and to “landscapy” for the conceptual people? Or do you think variety is a plus for marketing? I really value the network I’ve built up on RB and the thoughtful and detailed comments that people often go to the trouble of writing. So I’d like your opinion on this matter. Should I keep everything here or create a separate account for the non-landscapes? Thanks Geoff

So, it’s nearly winter here in Missouri… we had our first snow a few days ago. Just a dusting but it was like a little love note that autumn is gone. During this time of year I often get nostalgic for things that bring me comfort during the cold few months of winter. Here is a list of things I love about winter: Lit fireplaces / sweaters / hand-made scarves / layering / hot tea / cinnamon / snowboots / snow angels / family / cuddling I’d love for you to add to the list! Please tell me what your favorite things are about winter. :) xxx / Snuggly hugs, / Pj

Hello Friend, For a while now I have been working on the theory that not many people are prepared to wade their way through over twenty pages of images, so I have been moving pictures to page one so they will be noticed. IT WORKS!!! Firstly, I had a floral theme, followed by a cats theme and now I have just arranged the first page into a collection of architectural paintings … enjoy :) Dave.

Where I’m from (the US) we’ve been hearing a lot about “big tents” lately…meaning diversity in thought, belief, lifestyle, etc. I’ve always thought of “ART” as the biggest tent of all because we’re all artists in our way. Our lives are our art, I think. But that’s the “big picture,” the conceptual view. I was never an “artist,” never knew what the heck I was doing, never learned, never studied, never did much of anything except little bits here and there: drawing, taking pictures, making figures from clay. I thought that I didn’t fit into the “art tent” because I didn’t fit into the “literature tent” either. I had no message. I had no theme. I didn’t notice other peoples’ messages or themes. And when the ideas behind the creations other people made were pointed out to me I was interested but left wondering why anyone would bother. I just wanted to look at things that I wanted to look at, see the shapes, the colors, the light. I just wanted to read the stories, what happened to and with the characters. Messages? Themes? Meh. Did I ever try to put my emotions on canvas or paper? Yes. Frequently. But doing that never led to much. The response was usually that people were pushed away by the creation. It was “too much” for them. Too intense and too ugly. Too too. I still write poetry and still empty bits of me into the words. No themes, exactly, just a feeling or two. And I edit ruthlessly. But images? My messages aren’t there. I have none, usually. No slant. No axe to grind. No point to make or story to tell. No nothing beyond the shapes and colors. So being here with “real” artists is a struggle every day. It’s a GOOD struggle, but still…..I see that what I do is lacking that pre-thought, that plan. My “art” is what I find in the things I create, like a scavenger hunt, sort of, or a treasure hunt. But I never know before I start looking what I’m searching for. I start painting and things emerge or they don’t. I shoot a picture and find something in it or I don’t. I render a fractal with no thought to what it will be and then extract something or not. I pile layers onto each other and excavate a coherent image, or not. I used to think I was just lazy about it all. In fact, a relative (who is an artist) told me that and I believed it. But I know better now. I’m not choosing this. It’s me. Could I plan ahead? Could I select a message and concoct a strategy for how to present it visually? Yes…....I’ve managed to do that. But the efforts were underwhelming, blah, dry, pale; and the images were fractured, false and nearly transparent. Not me. Truly wasteful. When I take a picture I shoot what I see. Sometimes there’s something there and sometimes there isn’t. If I can edit something into existence, then I do. When I draw, I draw until something appears that makes “sense” to me. So I lack the consciousness of concept that seems to transform technicians and regular folks into “artists.” Does that matter? Is this tent big enough? No it doesn’t matter, unless my goal is to be a great artist. Certainly the tent is big enough. The fact that I do everything backwards, creating first and thinking second (or not at all) doesn’t matter either. We’re all in the tent. It’s a big one. / And I’m very happy to be here, bass-ackwards or not.
