Waiting patiently for his morning walk…... Boots our dearest Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, has the unfortunate name, as being black and tan he has golden lower legs. He was born during the rugby world cup when England actually won something and as his breeder was a rugby fan she called him Golden Boots, after Johny Wilkinson! Taken with my Sony F717, 800 ISO equiv. Lighting courtesy of my daughter holding a torch as there wasn’t enough natural light! Changed partially to sepia, then bluring and darker tones added for mood…..... Would make a super card ideal for any occasion, Birthday, Thank You, etc…. © 2008 Squealia

2.14pm – Wednesday afternoon The keys on this plastic alphabet are sticky. The seat has no back and the minutes are expensive. The sub audible hum of ten thousand anxious people reverberate through the terminal floor. The timeless neon glow of Gates 31-40, Baggage Claim, Toilets and a Foodcourt burn into my pores. A voice informs me that Mr Nigel Sankey should really hurry along to Gate 36, because all the people already wedged onto the plane are getting seriously annoyed. In another life our original flight had not suffered the generic ‘engineering difficulties’ and we were already home, but in this life we were destined to spend half a day in Sydney airport at an internet cafe, so still in this life I wrench the keyboard from a neighbouring computer and walk resolutely towards the mannequins at the Virgin Service Desk, a blank look in my eye. / How did it come to this? 7.55am – Earlier that same day El Presidente and I burst into the breakfast room of the Shangri La hotel in Sydney, where NetGuide are holding the ceremony of their yearly internet awards. The room goes slightly quiet, the dog in the corner ceases playing the piano, and the 100% suited and booted occupants turn to look at these last minute arrivals, one in a vibrant red limited edition RedBubble tee, the other in a faux-Napoleonic military jacket. I wave my cane in the direction of some empty seats and we take our place between the MD of eBay and a man from the Bureau of Meteorology. A general air that we may be ‘chancers’ prevails. The ceremony begins, and decorum is held in fine corporate silence, broken by an intermittent golf clap as another nervous individual waddles up to claim their glass shard. The 14th prize is for Best New Site, and it is won by a company called Web Menu, but also has a Highly Commended Category, which RedBubble wins. None of the other categories really have second place awards, and so we still appear like we are here for the free breakfast. The final two awards, however, are a little more prestigious, and they begin with the ‘People’s Choice’ which NetGuide are very proud of, and after building it up to unprecendented heights they announce that RedBubble has conquered it without question. You can hear the room inhale in unison, then vigourously clap. Afterwards everyone was very friendly, coming over to congratulate and talk details, I was even accosted by one man in the gents but I requested he wait until I finish, I think he had something to do with the ceremony. We hand out some t-shirts and greetings cards and even some bubbles, which could be seen floating around the room towards the end of the event. 9.45am After a suitably cheesy photoshoot, we jump into a taxi and head for the airport and hopefully, a quick flight home. —-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—— I’d just like to take this opportunity, on behalf of the whole team, to thank all of you, and not just all of you who managed to read this whole post, or even all of you who voted for us, but ALL of you. Because you really do make this site as vibrant as it is, without you we’re nothing, well, not nothing, we’d be a bunch of nerds in a room with some flashy computers and an endless biscuit supply, but I don’t think there’s an award for that. / So thanks and don’t stop now, we’re just getting warmed up. onetonshadow, and everybody else Oh and big up to NetGuide for the whole event, bacon and free mousemats, here’s what they have to say about it Addendum / I’d also like to thank the mighty Anne van Alkemade for stumbling across the competition in the first place and alerting our eager community. May your days be filled with fine wines and tasty cakes.

...a drop of water on the leaf of a weed in a garden of roses. He’s the Master Of Details, isn’t He? :-) Of the more than 110,000 photographs I’ve taken in the last two years, this is the one that garners the most positive comments and the most admiration. I’ve always loved it but hadn’t know the depth of other’s enjoyment in it until I started showing it in prints and online. Here, it’s the shot I’ve taken with the most comments and the most ‘favouritings’. The very glory of what He does on such an incredibly small scale shows in this simple macro snapshot of a weed. If I had to choose a single photograph I’d call a “masterpiece”, this one or “magnolia” would tie for that title. All profit from the sale of this image is pledged to be donated to the church or pastor of the buyer’s choice. If no choice is specified, I will chose one and note it in my Red Bubble journal. (Please see comments to understand what happened, the complete details of what is planned to happen, and why it will happen, if you’d like to know.)

Heartfelt Thanks

I finally have a few minutes to catch my breath and thank all of you from the bottom of my heart for your thoughts, prayers and incredible generosity. The Redbubble community have been amazing and all my family and friend have commented on the love and support demonstrated by you all. I thought as so many of you couldn’t be with us at the funeral to celebrate Axel’s life, that I would put the transcript here along with some pictures. There were over 300 people at the funeral from all over Australia. It was conducted by a teacher from the school both Glen and I attended (my older girls also attend this school now), he has been a part of our lives for over 20 years and it was fantastic to have him as a part of it. Axel was carried in by his father, and 3 uncles to the The Book of Love by Peter Gabriel – it has always been one of my favourite songs. On top of his coffin Meg and Zoe placed an arrangement of apgapanthus (Axel’s favourite flower he used to eat them!) and a framed photo of him. I then read a poen written by Judy Walker titled Don’t tell me : Please don’t tell me you know how I feel, / Unless you have lost your child too, / Please don’t tell me my broken heart will heal, / Because that is just not true, / Please don’t tell me my son is in a better place, / Though it is true, I want him here with me, / Don’t tell me someday I’ll hear his voice, see his face, / Beyond today I cannot see, / Don’t tell me it is time to move on, / Because I cannot, / Don’t tell me to face the fact he is gone, / Because denial is something I can’t stop, / Don’t tell me to be thankful for the time I had, / Because I wanted more, / Don’t tell me when I am my old self you will be glad, / I’ll never be as I was before, / What you can tell me is you will be here for me, / That you will listen when I talk of my child, / You can share with me my precious memories, / You can even cry with me for a while, / And please don’t hesitate to say his name, / Because it is something I long to hear everyday, / Friend please realize that I can never be the same, / But if you stand by me, you may like the new person I become someday. Both Grandfather’s then said a few words together. Meg and Zoe have to be the bravest little girls in the world, they both wrote a speech and read it to Axel… —-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-- Meg As soon as you popped out into this world I knew you were going to be a cheeky rascal. You brought joy to this family, being Zoë and my first brother, mums first boy and glens first child. U defiantly grew up to be a real man, you had a great character that no one could ever replace. I’ll never forget how you use to wake me up in the morning, coming into my room and yanking on my hair or your kisses, your kisses were the best in the world. But the thing I’ll remember the most is the last time I saw you on Christmas morning, we were playing on my new toy and he said my name loud and clear he said “meg” and I will cherish that last moment with you for the rest of my life. I hope that you remember how much I love you’ll never forget about our family. Axel you brought joy to everyone and as glen said “ you lit up our lives.” I am soo truly glad you were in my life. And just remember I will never forget you ever. / / Nor your smile or your kisses and I always will the character you had, I will cherish you always and always remember that we all truly love you. —-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-- Zoë You are the best brother in the world and you still are even though you are in heaven. I hope you have a great time there, getting to know friends and family like warren, Paul, Matthew and my friend’s brother Harry. They will all be there for you, to play and to have fun. You will have the best time of your life in heaven. You were cute and so very cuddly to all family and friends. I am glad you still in my life and that you are my brother. Its sad that you had a short life and that you only had one birthday but we will still celebrate them, so you know we will never forget about you. You were a cheeky baby and that I will always be in my memories. I hope you will enjoy the presents Meg and I gave you, the Jessie doll and the care bear. You mean soo much to this family; it’s become stronger since you and Ty have been in our lives. I love you to as far as you can go and back, you are my best brother in the whole wide world. We all will be with you every step you take! Lots of love Zoe your big sister. —-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-- Glen and I were then able to get up and support each other through our memories of Axel… Glen A friend said recently “Your book is already written before you are even born” We believe that Axel was here for a purpose, his time was short but he touched everyone he met. His was a very short story but it was action packed. Being a father is something I never expected to happen. It has changed me in ways I never imagined. Axel became my best friend, my buddy, my little man. I came from a single life to a life with step daughters and a lovely wife. This began to mould me into a loving father and friend. I began to see that there was more to life than myself and that nothing could come close to life with a family. If Axel’s journey was shortened for a reason then it was this…to draw our family together tighter than ever before and to teach us that each day together is a blessing. Sarah My arms are empty but my heart and mind are full of him. The fun that we shared will remain forever etched in time. In our home there is always music playing and Axel loved to dance, his favourite music was rock – Jet, AC/DC and dance, anything with a beat. He had amazing rhythm, it would start at his head with a wobble, with merry eyes, his cheekiest grin would appear and then his hips would sway with his bum stuck right out. Finally he would stomp – the most hilarious thing you have ever seen, it would never fail to make us laugh. There was something about this baby that made him unique. He was a magnet, he could draw people to him without uttering a word. We often had people stop us in the street to comment on his smile, and they would thank us for brightening up their day. He was a naughty little snot at times, with a stubborn will (he got THAT from his mum), and a crazy temper (he got that from his mum too). But he always listened, he was willing to hear us and learn. The best part of Axel’s day was the moment his Dada arrived home. He would drag me to the front door and when opened would bolt to Glen…so incredibly excited that he was home. This little man was an unexpected surprise but he quickly became the joy of our lives, his love of life and infectious laugh brightened up the worst days. Glen Axel grew up in a house of laughter and joy, his sisters taught him to laugh, an amazing from the gut chuckle that rocked his entire body (so much so that last week he vomited mid laugh!!). He loved his sisters so much, he would light up every afternoon when they got in the car after school. Axel adored Ty, his little brother, he tried to share everything with him, toys, food, dummy, blankie, kisses with lots of slobber. We only had to warn him to be gentle and he would ever so carefully place a kiss on Ty’s head, only to rip the dummy out of his mouth as soon as we weren’t looking and run as fast as he could! He loved to be outdoors, if he was ever sad or upset you only had to open the front door and his face would light up and he was off exploring the world. He had no fear, he was always on an adventure, discovering new and amazing things every day. Axel loved life with a passion, and he loved people with a passion too…his grandmothers were no exception. He loved going to Nanna’s each morning to steal her keys, he adored spending time with Grandma Karen as she spoiled him rotten and he always remembered his Nannie Annie no matter how far between visits demanding cuddles immediately. Axel touched everyone he met. He is unforgettable, We will miss him forever. —-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-- During this time we played video footage from his time on earth – gorgeous happy memories…smiles and dancing and full of love. The family then got up and formed a circle around Axel holding hands, while Sweet Child of Mine by Guns n Roses played in the background. To finish off my father read a poem written by Daniel (DoctorJPhotography) Axel The gold in your hair / Is only a hint of the wealth I have in my heart Because of you And when the wind blows through it / It’s as if the very air around you takes no greater joy / Than in trying to match your spirit / In trying to take, if it could, just an ounce of your spirit with it / And you smile, as if you knew it Tell me, little angel How your eyes alone have lived for so many more years / Than the body that holds them Somewhere, in a place beyond what my mind can understand / You seem to walk so effortlessly through Tell me, my son When you fit yourself so perfectly into my arms / When your laughter becomes the one / Ballad written by God Himself / That silences all the broken drums It was as if everything about you, the purity of you / The you-ness of you / Every laugh, tear, and unintelligible word / Tried to tell a story / Of the place where you came from / More than what cameras, words, or minds could capture That I would be good enough / To watch you breathe as you dream / That I was worthy enough / To hold your head on my chest when you cried / That I would deserve / To have a little rain pour down on me / To make the fields in my heart grow just a little greener For one entire year / It will never be enough To simply call it the greatest gift I have ever been given / And to know it was mine For only one entire year / It will never be enough For whenever rain falls / It inevitably must float back to the skies from where it came / And I am thirsty again My dearest son / When I fly back home to you Promise me you’ll take my hand in yours / And never let me go. —-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—- To finish we played Tears in Heaven by Eric Clapton, after which we all went outside with a red balloon each which were released at 4.30pm (along with many other red balloons all around the world). —-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—- There are so many people that I want to thank, but there are almost too many to mention. I have been encouraged and supported by all your comments and bubblemails, as well as your images, poems and art. This is an amazing community! I especially want to thank Sam for being so amazing with my girls and organising the print / Bill Fonseca for taking the photos at the funeral (that must have been a hard thing to do!) / Steve McLaren for all his support and videoing the funeral / Sara Lamond for organising a condolence book at the gallery and taking many photos of our family at the mural yesterday / Jeffrey Hamilton for painting such an amazing mural for Axel

The bridge reminds me of an emotion of solitude, which is not to be confused with loneliness. The former leads to an internal peace and being one with nature and oneself while the latter was a feeling of being forced to be alone, deprived of freedom and choice. I used to call this photo “Peaceful Bridge” until a young patient of mine (at the time she was nine years old) explored the difference between solitude and loneliness. When the image was presented to him as an illustration, he exclaimed, “Oh, solitude is peace, inner peace!” And the true title of the piece was born. Donation to charity / 50% of the proceeds of the sale of this image will be donated to Nature Canada

I’ve managed (by some miracle) to crack the 100 t-shirt sales mark. I know that there are loads of people on RB that probably do that in a month (I’m looking at you and your CCTV Government t-shirt Ross Robinson!) but if you’d told me I’d be able to do that a year ago, I’d have thought you were one of those crazy internet people who doesn’t spend enough time in the real world. To mark the occasion I’ve decided to throw out a little t-shirt design challenge with a difference. The main difference being that this one has a prize. I had all these crazy ideas about prizes. Helvetica DVDs, free t-shirts, gorgeous books on illustration and typography, free CDs etc. then I thought, you know what … this is going to cost a shedload to post from the UK and it’s coming up to Christmas … I reckon people would just prefer the cash. So pay attention cos this is how it’s going to go down. Important stuff first. The Prize/Incentive A guaranteed sale. Not very exciting right? Well it’s a bit more exciting if you put an 800% mark up on it. Now, I’ll most likely go for a girly fitted tee so by my calculations, that means you’ll earn yourself about £75.00 (approx $160.00 USD) from one shirt sale. Which is better than a kick in the face with a golf shoe. Upload your shirt at the normal price and if you’re the chosen one, I’ll let you know and we can arrange a time where you can bump the price up and I can make my pur-chase … The Theme The theme for this little challenge is Reveal Yourself. Now, before you get the digital camera out and start nuding up I should clarify. I’m looking for a design that features something revealing about your personality – not your anatomy. It could be designed in a style you love, feature a subject matter you’re passionate about, demonstrate your sense of humour or tell a story from your past. It’s open to wide interpretation. The Fine Print It must be uber cool as I’ve got to wear it and I need all the cred I can get New designs only Enter as many times as you like Post your designs in the comments below The challenge will close midnight (GMT) Sunday 21st of September, 2008 Bonus points will awarded for spending extra time in the tee community over the next few weeks, leaving comments and encouraging others Tag your work revealyourself (this bit is important) The final choice is up to me and I’ll pick the design I love the most Please pass this on to any t-shirt designers you think may be keen. It’s just a small incentive to encourage some new, killer t-shirt designs and a way of saying thanks to everyone who has bmailed, encouraged me, commented on my stuff and bought shirts since my first upload 10 months ago. I can’t begin to thank you enough :) Cheers, / Nat

What the hell is going on (and other uplifting stories)...

Ok, ok first of all, everyone breath. Cool. Now let’s check. Melbourne experiencing four seasons in one day? Check. Shane Warne caught out again? Check. Running my own business continuing to be challenging? Check. Darren Stones steering the good ship RB around icebergs with a confident if not somewhat alcohol induced flourish? Check. Some people on some distant journal thread arguing about freedom of speech as if RB is the most vital instrument for world peace on earth. Whilst slandering, vilifying and taunting each other with racial, overworked cliches from behind psuedo names? Check. So nothing new or unusual about today then? Un check. What the… Check this… Today in seperate orders people have bought… 1 canvas print of shoe woman plus 20 cards of shoe woman 150 cards of mother & child 25 cards of Possibility II 25 cards of the congo skipping kids & a further 26 of these 20 cards of this beauty 5 cards of these guys 5 cards of these little ones 2 cards of this chap 2 cards of this dude 2 cards of this princess 5 cards of this piece of possibility and 2 cards of this beautiful, precious boy I don’t know anything much about freedom of speech, flags, philosophy or anything like the stuff that’s been going on here this week. But I’ll tell you all ONE VERY IMPORTANT THING. These purchases will save lives. These people live on less than a dollar a day. They live in slums, gutters and sheds made of flattened alluminium cans. The love, they laugh, they dream – they dodge bullets, they run as fast as they can from rapists usually unsuccessfully, they starve and they cry. Every cent of revenue goes to them and the brave souls who live in a war zone to help them. They couldn’t give a rats about flags, and virtual slanging matches. They live on the real edge. I didn’t cry once in Africa. Right now I am sitting here drowning in tears. Maybe change is possible? Even the tiniest bit?? Thanks RB – thanks whoever. EDIT: SEEMS LIKE A GOOD TIME TO DEBUT THIS FELLA. Oh and thinking of turning some of these into Chrissy cards if anyone’s interested.
