A bit of color and light over the odd rock formations known as the tesselated pavement along the Tasman PEninsula. The Tessellated Pavement is an inter-tidal rock platform – a common enough coastal landform. But here an unusual set of geological circumstances have resulted in a rare landform. The flat-lying siltstone was cracked by stresses in the Earth’s crust, roughly between 160 million years ago and 60 million years ago. The resulting cracks (joints) are seen as three main sets, one aligned to the north- northeast, a second to the east-northeast and the third to the north-northwest. This jointing, exaggerated by processes of erosion, has created the ‘tiled’ appearance. When seawater covers the rock platform, fragments of rock are carried away. Near the seaward edge of the platform, sand is the main cause of the erosion. When combined with wave action the erosional process causes ‘loaf’ or ‘pan’ formations.

  • So slept in the back of the car to save on driving down here and rushing to make sunrise. Can’t beat getting up at 4.20am (out of shock) and walking down to this spot in the dark…really! loved it, it was really hot that day so it was pleasent with a nice warm breeze blowing. If you look at the top left just above the island you can see a newish moon about to go down and the sun is trying to make it’s way up, better to view it large. It’s about a 30 second exposure.

  • Tessellated Pavement
    by Kelly McGill

It meant getting up at 3am to get this shot – but it was worth it!

  • Taken at Eaglehawk Neck southeast Tasmania, / It is called the tessellated pavement. The pavement appears tessellated (it’s tiled) because the rocks forming it were fractured by earth movements. The fractures are in three sets, one set runs almost north, another east north east, and a third discontinuous set north north west. These last two sets produce the tiled appearance. The flatness of the pavement is due to initial erosion by waves carrying sand and gravel and nearer to the cliff, to chemical action by sea water. The rocks which absorb sea water during high tide dry out during low tide causing salt crystals to grow and disintegrate the rocks – a process which produces shallow basins’
