This profound quotation is commonly called St. Teresa’s Bookmark as it was found tucked into one of the great saint’s books. St. Teresa of Avila was a Carmelite nun who lived in Spain and was a great mystic and prolific spiritual writer. I created this image today for three people: for Barbara and Jerry, my mother’s neighbors who lost their home in a fire yesterday. All of their worldly possessions were destroyed in about thirty minutes. Barbara ran out of the house with her purse, her robe and house slippers, and the cup of coffee she was holding when smoke billowed everywhere. The other person I created this for is a friend, Brenda, who emailed me to say she was feeling low and needed a word of encouragement. I thought that these three people who are deeply troubled would be comforted by these words of enduring wisdom and truth. Maybe someone else needs to hear them, too. God help us all to remember that he alone suffices and he alone is unchanging and dependable.

New note 13 October 2009: Got back a few minutes ago from a prize giving for a local photography competition for photos representing “life is always a pleasure in Buffalo City” as I was one of the 13 finalists out of nearly 200 entries – and they chose me as the overall winner! I received a new camera and a R1000 shopping voucher! My boys, then 9 and 10, enjoying a warm evening at the beach in mid autumn, East London, South Africa, 2008, at Gonubie river mouth

Featured in Alphabet Soup – Aug 1st, 2009 / Featured in Songbirds of North America – July 3rd, 2009 / Featured in For the love of Canon – June 10th, 2009 The Cape May Warbler breeds across the boreal forest of Canada and the northern United States, where the fortunes of its populations are largely tied to the availability of spruce budworms, its preferred food. Striking in appearance but poorly understood, the species spends its winters in the West Indies, collecting nectar with its unique curled, semitubular tongue. Male Description: / Breeding (Alternate) Plumage: Chestnut or orange-brown cheek patches, contrasting with bright yellow sides of neck. Throat and breast yellow with crisp black streaks. Rump bright yellow. Crown and nape blackish. Narrow black stripe through eye. Back olive with black streaking. Large white patch in wing. White under tail. Nonbreeding (Basic) Plumage: Duller overall, with less distinct facial markings. / Female Description: / Breeding (Alternate) Plumage: Head and back olive-gray. Sides of neck, throat, and breast pale yellow. Streaks on breast and sides narrow and gray. Rump yellow. Two wing bars on each wing. Nonbreeding (Basic) Plumage: Duller and less olive. Streaking less distinct. / Immature Description: / Similar to adult. Immature females may be extremely dull gray overall, with only a hint of yellow on the rump. / (http://www.allaboutbirds.org/guide/Cape_May_Warbler/id) / Photographed in a friend’s backyard in Anola, Manitoba, Canada. Featured in Art by Bubble Hosts – July 5th, 2009 / Featured in THe Birds – June 19th, 2009 / Featured in Canon DSLR – June 15th, 2009 The Evening Grosbeak, Coccothraustes vespertinus, is a large finch. In the past, it was treated in a genus of its own as Hesperiphona vespertina, but is now usually placed in the same genus as the Hawfinch of Eurasia. The breeding habitat is coniferous and mixed forest across Canada and the western mountainous areas of the United States and Mexico. The nest is built on a horizontal branch or in a fork of a tree. The migration of this bird is variable; in some winters, it may wander as far south as the southern U.S. The Evening Grosbeak is 18.5 cm long. The adult has a short black tail, black wings and a large pale bill. The adult male has a bright yellow forehead and body; its head is brown and there is a large white patch in the wing. The adult female is mainly olive-brown, greyer on the underparts and with white patches in the wings. These birds forage in trees and bushes, sometimes on the ground. They mainly eat seeds, berries and insects. Outside of the nesting season, they often feed in flocks. Sometimes, they will swallow fine gravel. The range of this bird has expanded far to the east in historical times, possibly due to plantings of Manitoba maples and other maples and shrubs around farms and the availability of bird feeders in winter. It was once thought that the Evening Grosbeak sang only in the evening, a fact that is reflected in both its common name and scientific names (vespertinus is Latin for “of the evening”) Photographed in Anola, Manitoba, Canada / Canon XSi, f/7.1, 1/250 sec, ISO-200, focal length- 300mm.

Spotted this really fascinating cloud when I was visiting Indian Canyons, just outside of Palm Springs. Nina is one of only two remaining wild born Western Lowland gorillas at the Woodland Park Zoo in Seattle. She is a grand old lady somewhere between 40 and 50 years old and she is wonderful! She has a fantastic sense of humor. She will sit looking so stoic for a while, then all of a sudden she will stick her tongue out and make faces! I just adore her!
