As far as I’m concerned, Tokyo is the most exciting city in the World. Why? Is it because of the wonderfully crazy mix of old and new? The technology? The population? The fashion? The music (come on, who doesn’t love SMAP?) The food? The fact the place never, ever sleeps? No. It’s because the free-to-air television is just so plain awful, thereby forcing people to devise ingenious ways of avoiding it. If you look up “huh?” in the dictionary, a selection of “Nihon no terebi” highlights will be flickering up at you in glaring colours. Every show seemed to involve either cooking or comedy. Or, if you were very lucky – “comedy cooking”. It was like watching “Ready, Steady, Cook”, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week on 10 channels. I have always championed the genius of Ainsley Harriet (even if it is deeply buried in a quagmire of dullness and wrapped in a thick gauze of stupidity). But even I couldn’t stand Ainsley’s brand of hilarity for more than 30 minutes a day. Japanese television has Harriet to the power of a thousand! Despite the language barrier, there appeared to be only be 2 words you needed to know to get the most out of your viewing pleasure: “oishi” and “sugoi”. The former word means “delicious”, the latter means “amazing”. Apparently, everything was either delicious or amazing, or a combination of both. This would refer to anything from a bowl of plain rice to road kill. Occassionally, we were given a reprieve with K1 fighting, which pits large, powerful men against other large powerful men with the victor being the last large powerful man standing. But they took it to the extreme by taking Akebono out of mothballs. He is a former Yokozuna – a Sumo grand master, part of a proud sporting tradition. However, this lumbering giant was reduced to slapping at the air while his lithe opponents fancy stepped around him. His only hope was if they tripped on their own fancy footwork, and he pinned them with the belly flop of doom. Actually, I really miss it:(

I have been rewatching “Curb Your Enthusiasm” (season 1) on DVD and having a good laugh. It is written by and stars Larry David; who created Seinfeld with Jerry Seinfeld and wrote a lot of episodes. George Costanza was based on Larry somewhat. / “Curb Your Enthusiasm” is Larry David playing himself and is filmed in a low budget style and improvised to a basic script. It aired on HBO in the USA which is a cable network, so there is swearing and adult concepts not shown on free-to-air networks (USA anyway). / If you enjoyed Seinfeld and the conversations about ‘nothing’, you will like this show. The cast is Larry and his wife Cheryl, Larry’s manager and various friends and family. There are guest appearances by Jason Alexander (George Costanza), Julie Louis-Dreyfuss (Elaine Benis) and others which adds some interest. / A running theme throughout is Larry’s social faux pas’ and the consequences. Another aspect is the clever plotting that brings each episode full circle, a similar technique was used in Seinfeld but here feels less contrived. / Give it a go. You won’t regret it. Its ‘pretty, pret ty, pret ty, pret ty…good’.

If you grew up in Melbourne during the 60s, you won’t need to ask what I’m talking about. / The Samurai was the show everybody watched after school. Shintaro, the heroic samurai, fought the evil ninjas of old Japan, dispatching at least a couple in every episode. The show had some sort of magic to it. Even though it was quite new it looked years and years old. And it was dubbed of course, which made it even more mysterious. / Earlier this year I rediscovered The Samurai at my local video library (Planet, Beaufort St Mount Lawley, excellent range movies, music, books). I’m pretty sure that Shintaro wouldn’t get within coo-ee of an afternoon slot these days: way too violent (for a generation raised on video games – yeah, right), but worse than that, it’s black and white! Overall the show has survived well. A little corny at times, but the adventure is still there. And now as an adult I can appreciate aspects that I didn’t notice as a kid. In every series Shintaro came up against a different group of ninjas; they would meet at the beginning of each episode, their numbers steadily dwlindling as the Samurai sent them to join their honourable ancestors. There’s more information here / As a footnote, there was one series that Channel 9 didn’t broadcast back then. I know that from the opening credits – in which a ninja’s severed arm flops to the grass… And if you’re wondering what got me on to this subject – here’s your answer. /

I’m sure you’ve all seen the article that RB posted earlier today (or maybe yesterday) about the site being featured on the Australian morning show 9AM With David & Kim. The video can be seen here I was lucky enough to be one of the artists who made an appearance during the story (albeit for about 2 seconds!). It was such a lovely surprise and honour – particularly because I’ve only just started using this site in the last week. So I’m writing this to say thank you to RB for featuring one of my photos and for all the groups who have also featured my work in the last week. And even more importantly, thank you to all of you who have been supporting my work already, with watches, faves and thoughtful comments. You’ve all given me a really wonderful welcome to the site, and your support means a great deal to me. What a fantastic resource and community this site is, it’s wonderful to be surrounded by like minded artists to share inspiration, ideas and encouragement. I really look forward to seeing more incredible work from you all! Thank you again for your support! Cheers, / Damienne Life Is In The Details III is the photo that was lucky enough to be featured by RB and 9AM.

If you think you can do a better job than most of the people who work in the media, here’s your chance… WANTED: The next generation of broadcasters to produce an irreverent TV and web program about serious things. ABC TV and Zapruder’s other films (the people behind The Chaser, the Gruen Transfer and Enough Rope), are looking for creative young people who are original thinkers with a view about what’s happening in Australia and the world, to work on Project NEXT. Project NEXT is the working title of a new topical 10×30 min program to be screened on ABC1, ABC2, the web, mobile phones and online. Applications are welcome from creative people with an 18 to 30 year old perspective to work as reporters, producers, camera/directors, editors, graphic artists, researchers and web content producers. They are looking for people who will abandon the usual definitions and who can look at the world in a different way. Applicants need to complete the downloadable application form and submit an original video. Short-listed applicants will be contacted to arrange interviews, which are likely to be held in April 2009. Selected candidates will participate in a training workshop in Sydney in mid-June and then work on the project from mid-August until early December 2009. For more information, visit: www.projectnext.net.au and for information about Zapruder’s other films: www.zof.com.au. Deadline is close of business Monday March 16, 2009.

Thank you for joining me live on the air…....... I watched some TV today and watching TV has taught me many things. Which include the following… Plumper lips can be achieved using this brand of cosmetics…and eye lashes can appear longer using the other one. Smart phones are rubbish but I apparently need SatNav on my phone ? Mouthwash can make my mouth explode and washing powder can make my clothes whiter than my teeth. White bread is now healthy. Tiny, frozen yoghurts are fat and sugar free and battle only BAD bacteria ( Guess they had it coming eh! ) Butter won’t kill me dead. ( Thank you! ) Petrol is cheaper everywhere else. Driving a car is a bad thing because I’m killing the polar bear, but the penguins are doing fine. That model that got drunk also ate some chips in a taxi. The other one is getting divorced from the bloke that used to be famous 20 years ago. I must be green… no… Greener… and save the whales, dolphins, tigers, monkeys, donkeys, birds, badgers and the flower that can only be found in a small place in Argentina. Polticians are oppurtunist, power hungry, self absorbed, cheating, arrogant crooks. ( Sunday Times….. lol ) I never knew that ! The sun rises every morning and sets in the evening ( I don’t really need Sky TV to tell me that but thanks anyway ) Kids in school have to wear goggles on their faces when they’re frying an egg. ( It’s about time you crazy loons from Health and Safety spotted this potential risk to our kids, next time you know they’ll be playing on their X Boxes without a helmet ! ) Chicken is bad or good or bad or something and turkey is worse or better or worse, can’t remember but beef is… erm… something…. erm….good I think. / But I can eat butter. = ) Wayne = ) Watch TV

Updates, updates, updates…. Ok so for all those who have been following what has been happening…I have finished one book and made a good start on another. I am now five chapters into my new novel and it is going exactly to plan. I have learnt so much from the first one that I am really enjoying the writing process on this one! I have also spent much of today making contact with a dozen or so radio stations. I am determined that I can break the stereotype of an Author by bringing my work into the public arena through a number of mediums. I believe that there is room in the media for Authors to be on the Radio and TV – not just as a photo at the back of a novel! Soon I hope to be reading on-air, sharing stories and maybe even taking questions from the public. Well that is my plan and I am making it happen one step at a time. I will keep you updated as to what the Radio Stations say and would also like to say as a side note, that if you think you can do something, even if its not the “norm”- don’t be afraid to do it! Leave your mark! So thank you all for stopping by and remember for the latest in Reviews, News, Interviews and stories head to www.flicmanning.com Flic :)
