I wrote this poem for a future event which, sadly, I know will happen one day. Teens aren’t all ‘typical’ teens. Please listen to them and watch for the signs. Teen suicide is a reality and a tragic one. Please read the partner piece to this by Abeona

"MOTHER" .......a beautiful poem by my daughter aged 13 at the time
by coffeebeanA mother I think so much of, / a friend I truly need / Sometimes I may seem horrid, / but it’s only teenage creed Mum, I love you so much…
This is a poem my daughter Roslyn wrote me when she was aged 13. / We had all just survived a torrid period of time where she became this uncontrollable teenager who made our life truly horrible. Thankfully with a whole lot of unconditional love and perseverance from us she finally made it through and we all can now look on that time as something we all learned a lot from. / Roslyn now at 22 says if she could turn back the clock and rewrite the book she would, but at the time she had all the arrogance of youth with no thought of the hurt she was imposing on herself and her family. A truly selfish time but a time she now has so much regret for and understanding of. At the time she was just hellbent on doing what she wanted when she wanted. / She came out of it though and the love that was never ever abandoned, though sorely tested, won in the end. She became once again the lovely girl she had been and now is a young woman I am so very proud of and love enormously. We have a beautiful relationship and this poem she wrote me and presented so beautifully typed out on lovely paper is one of my greatest treasures. Take heart from this when you go through the rough times with your own kids. / Susan Davies inspired me to post this poem after reading her lovely poem “Children Are A Blessing”. Thanks Sue.

Teenage Angst (2)
by Anne van AlkemadeFor when we do misunderstand / I wish we could live as god had planned.
Nothing is ever as good as the first inspiration – but only if it’s something you have lost. My first Teenage Angst fell foul of the delete key and I am hoping some day it may again find the light of day. But until that miracle, Teenage Angst (2) will just have to do. (It is in response to a beautiful poem written by the irrepressable Danny and his piece Subliminal

Loki's Bane
by Shaun JohnstonHe was a servant of the night, bound to Loki’s side / Forced to hunger as a slave for ebbing crimson tides
I wrote this when I was 17, based on a very patchy understanding of Norse folklore and mythology combined with vampirism and Tolkien-esque ideas about Light and Darkness ;)

One Sweet Jazz Sunday Afternoon.
by Denis DalbyI remember that first time, / When; one sweet jazz / Sunday afternoon, / I first saw Tubby at the As. We caught the bus from Blackpool, ...
I used to live in Blackpool when I was a teenager and although it was a lively seaside town, it was not the centre of the jazz universe. So a group of us used to travel to by bus Manchester for a Sunday afternoon jazz session at the Astoria Ballroom, known to us as the ‘As’. This poem is my memory of the day we saw the late great Tubby Hayes who was only fifteen at the time. He went on to be one the greatest tenor sax players Britain has ever produced and famously featured with Ronnie Scott in the ‘Jazz Couriers’, but died tragically when in his 30s

NETHERLEY COMPREHENSIVE
by Stephen JacksonThe late Monday light forsakes us / All, as if offended. / Here we sit, you and I, / Made brutal by mutual fear. / This is the way wars star…
This was one of the schools they sent me to during my teacher-training in 1981. Netherley is an outskirt of Liverpool; and I was there at the time of the Toxteth Riots. The only day I took off sick the pupils rioted: bricks through windows, teachers spat on as they were kicked to the floor. Just goes to show what happens if I take my omnipotent stare of anything for a minute. More to the point (what with the canings and the revolting, smug or lackadaisal inmates of the Staff Room) the kids had my fullest sympathy. I dreaded school when I was a child: the rituals and restrictions, the bullies, the boredom. I had one illness after another and taught myself all I needed to know from my parents’ marvellous books. As Quentin Crisp commented, “Education is the biggest waste of time the world has ever known.”

thou art ...
by Shaun Johnstonpersonification of Beauty divine / the mist in the hills, the morning dew’s shine
This is a poem I wrote about a girl I had a crush on when I was 18 years old. I wrote it in a card and gave it to her for her birthday, but alas it was not long after that I realised what I harboured for her was a naive, idealistic crush, and not a hope :)
