Here is another image taken today. To me, converse sneakers are the epitome of youth and they never seem to go out of fashion.. My parents wore them, I wore them and now my sons and daughter are already wearing them (by the way.. these were my pair of ‘connies’ which now my son is wearing). I just liked the way they portray youth and although each generation think they are better than the last; I think fundamentally they always stay the same.

This picture is inspired by a a neighbors teenage son. This is him leaping though a break in a wall. a break in the wall he created after 4 hours of hitting it. Where I live in the city many teenagers seem to have become feral. Living from moment to moment, some great anxiety and anger holds them all and they appear to be in a constant state of readiness for something? Combat or escape? I do not know, and I don’t think they do either. Why? I cannot be sure of that, but they are distressed, angry and deeply unhappy about what life brings them. This picture was made over a year ago, and since then he has been removed from his home buy social services. I have no idea if his life has improved, but I doubt it.

I was shooting a basket ball game and noticed this cute couple in the bleachers, they were such a contrast to all the teens nearby who were all ‘connecting’ with their cell phones and ipods and looking so isolated from one another. Ironic how lonely we can be in this age of mass connectivity! / I painted this in Photoshop and spent 2 entire nights on it, as I had an idea in my head as to how i wanted it to turn out. I composited a few other ‘bodies’ from another shot and zoomed in and used airbrushes, smudging and some custom brushes. / Hope ya like it. (C) 2008

I’ve done this image for a reason, to make some one think, think that Suicide is not the way out. I have delt with the after shock of Suicide for 41 years, My dad and I came home from work and I found my Mother lying across my bed dead from a bullet to the head. She had been very depressed but we didn’t think it would ever lead to this. Yes my Mother had been relieved of her depression, but she ruined my life forever. That was 41 years ago and I still have the guilt that I could have done something for her, I have the flashbacks every day of seeing her body laying across my bed with her life blood draining into my mattress. With our service men coming home from Iraq there has been reported a suicide once a week, or the man that kills his family then himself, or the teen that thinks he or she has nothing in life to live for, or a lonely woman who thinks her family dosn’t love her. / I hope the viewer dosn’t think this image is too morbid or shouldn’t be shown, because I feel If I can make one person think that Suicide is never worth it and seek help then I did what I set out to do. / Larry Why Do Teens Try to Kill Themselves? / Most teens interviewed after making a suicide attempt say that they did it because they were trying to escape from a situation that seemed impossible to deal with or to get relief from really bad thoughts or feelings. Like Ethan, they didn’t want to die as much as they wanted to escape from what was going on. And at that particular moment dying seemed like the only way out. Some people who end their lives or attempt suicide might be trying to escape feelings of rejection, hurt, or loss. Others might be angry, ashamed, or guilty about something. Some people may be worried about disappointing friends or family members. And some may feel unwanted, unloved, victimized, or like they’re a burden to others. We all feel overwhelmed by difficult emotions or situations sometimes. But most people get through it or can put their problems in perspective and find a way to carry on with determination and hope. So why does one person try suicide when another person in the same tough situation does not? What makes some people more resilient (better able to deal with life’s setbacks and difficulties) than others? What makes a person unable to see another way out of a bad situation besides ending his or her life? The answer to those questions lies in the fact that most people who commit suicide have depression. given to whimsy or fanciful notions; capricious. I totally wanted to stretch the box here… the box I am always in when it comes to photography. Once again, this photo isn’t perfect… but I am glad I did something different and spent more time thinking about how I wanted it to look. I would like to try to do something more like this more often. It is fun! Yeah- it is fairytaleish… unrealistic… but that was what I was going for!

My daughter recently left on a trip I did not want her to take, but being 18 I could not stop her. Before she left we had bought a Norah Jones CD and on the back was a sort of dark moody portrait that my daughter loved and she asked me to work on one of her while she was gone. This really flattered me as she hates to have her picture taken and I really wanted to please her and give her something to hang on her dorm wall this Fall. As I was painting this in Photoshop I began to realize the face was as much my own as it was hers. I started thinking about what I was like at 18 and I had taken off to the outta Banks of NC and lived there a year , not knowing a soul there. I thought about how smart and capable my daughter is and as I painted I began to trust her more and worry less. I somehow just knew that she would be okay and would make it home without mishap. / When she came home tonight , the first thing she said was “God, I missed you so much, you don’t even know” and then she said “You know , we are so much alike you and I”.. / and I felt she and I had both grown and …indeed became more of one another while accepting that she is very much her own person. / She loves the portrait! and I love that she loves it! / I am blessed.. / (like most art and life, I am not sure I am finished with this)

Ordinarily the gravel spit below Salem’s pedestrian bridge is a family place. One afternoon though it was filled with tension as angry young men jostled for attention, but did not quite come to blows. Transparent watercolor on 140 lb cold-pressed paper. Approximately 8×10 inches. This painting was created entirely by using the mask and pour technique. Featured in Students and Beginners, 12/18/24. 100 visitors 12/24/09
