  • Still life, and my life line coffee ! / /

  • A photo of another kitty we had- Teaspoon. She got her name because I picked her up on the side of the road one dark night- I saw little glowing eyes in the headlights. She was so malnourished and skinny, she wasn’t as big as a “teaspoon.” She was a very beautiful cat- she was also unique in that she had 6 toes on each front paw. Very weird- I had never seen that before.

  • Another shot of sweet Teaspoon the kitty cat, this one, she is has matured into a teenager! She was an absolute pleasure to have around.

  • My dear friend Antoine had just returned from a tour of India and had brought me back a gift of a hookah. It was an exceptionally beautiful item, crafted of blown opalescent glass and gilt in fine designs accented with jewels. I was beside myself with delight – I had always secretly wanted one. I couldn’t wait to have this exotic item lounging casually on my coffee table. “Well, let’s try it out!” said Antoine, extracting a small velveteen pouch from his pocket. I gave up smoking some time ago and my hookah fantasies had never ventured much past the purely decorative, but I was feeling adventuresome. “Hey, how about some coffee to go with?” he suggested, indicating a special blend he had brought back as well. He busied himself with the hookah and I busied myself with the French press and we bubbled and sipped for some time thereafter out on the back porch, under the light of a very bright, full moon. I felt more than a little peculiar and concluded that Antoine’s tobacco blend must be especially strong. Eventually his jet lag kicked in and he regretfully called it a night and went home. I went back out on the porch and stared, wide-eyed, at the ponderous moon, recalling why I don’t ever drink coffee after 2:00 pm. I glanced at the offending cup and saw this very entity hovering about 2 inches above it, clutching a diminutive donut. I calmly closed my eyes, rubbed them very hard, took a deep breath and opened them again. She was still there. There was also a small lizard twining its tail around my teaspoon. I began to wonder just what the hell Antoine had me smoking. After taking a delicate bite out of her donut, she informed me that she was a Java Goddess, an ancient deity who had been trapped in the heart of the bean and released with the aroma of the brew. Also, her lizard’s name was Sumatra. “That’s nice” I said, slowly backing away, “You two make yourselves perfectly comfortable – help yourselves to anything you’d like. I have to go to bed now”. I made a mad dash for a bottle of Ambien and figured that I would realize I’d been dreaming in the morning. But of course, the next morning I found donut crumbs in a saucer and tiny lizard prints on my teaspoon. And that coffee? I have brewed a pot of it every morning for the past 2 years and I haven’t run out of it yet. The goddess hasn’t visited me again, but maybe she will visit you. • Original is 9 1/2” x 12 1/2” original watercolor with inkline. Lady Tipton Lady Tipton took to sea, / She sailed the ocean in a cup of tea. / Steeping so long in the warm fragrant brew / Tinted her skin a soft golden hue. Over her head, the pale crescent moon / Stirred her heart like a silver teaspoon. / She gazed at the stars – there was such a clear view!- / Lights sparkling darkly like small sugar cubes. She was gone for a year, and maybe a day. / When people would ask her, “How could you stay? / In the chill of the night and the heat of the day? / With the creatures who churn in the depths of the sea, / With waves that could upend such a small cup of tea?” Lady Tipton smiled her mysterious smile, / And gazed towards the coast for a good long while. / She recalled the salt, the wet and the foam / A year spent afloat away from her home: / “I didn’t much mind being oh-so-alone, / But I did often long for a blueberry scone!” This original artwork and story are copyright Ramona Szczerba 2005. • Sometimes when you have to have a donut, you HAVE to have a donut. Emmet* and his grumpy cat, Otis, have embarked on a quest for a tasty morning snack. Emmet’s Teacup Racer features a teaspoon handbrake and back propellor (in case of flood). The parasol sunshade with aftermarket compass just add to the luxury. Otis is being towed behind in his Teapot Buggy with turning wheels and spinning propellor because, let’s face it – cats can’t drive. Besides, he wants to keep an eye on the fascinating Fish Transport operation overhead. / *Actually my great uncle Joe, as a child. This original artwork is copyright Ramona Szczerba 2008. • Have you ever been strolling through your garden, early in the morning, and come across a piping hot cup of tea nestled among the vines you forgot to prune back last spring? No? Well, tea faeries ARE rather rare, it’s true, but I’ve captured a likeness of this one so you will know what to look for. Teablossom Terpsichore (genus Faerie Terpsichoreus, commonly known as the Dancing Faerie) graces my garden from time to time, usually accompanied by her Toasty Butteredflies. I often find her soaking her little slippered feet in a cup of Earl Grey and wearing her adorable little teacup hat. Out of politeness, I avoid nibbling her buttery friends, but they do make me awfully hungry for breakfast. / Teablossom does a lovely little dance while I thoughtfully sip my first cup of the morning. Keep an eye out Teablossom because a Tea Faerie dance is a great way to start your day. She WILL swipe your teaspoons, though… This original artwork and story are copyright Ramona Szczerba 2008. • Of the many dusty and decrepit thrift shops advertising that they specialize in “antiques” that I have been in, the one where I got the bottle was not even especially remarkable. What could one expect from a shop perched at the end of a boardwalk in a seedy little seaside town? Usually I am looking for Victorian photos for my artwork, although it’s very rare that I find any, but “Cosette’s Seaside Antiques” looked promising if only for the fact that it was situated in a crumbling but charming Victorian cottage. Chiefly, there were seashells, as one might expect (I suppose some of the larger ones could be over 20 years old), but among the drifts of knick knacks and bric-a-brac, a certain bottle caught my eye. It was a delightful shape, curvy as a showgirl, and it was so seaworn that it was completely opaque. Some very tenacious barnacles clung to the bottom, and its cork and the wax sealing it were surprisingly intact. I made my way to the proprietess, a woman so old she seemed to be collapsing in on herself, and asked how much. “Zat ees a true antique”, she asserted, “zo I could take no less zan $100. Eet ees from 1854!” She took a long drag from her Gauloise while my left eyebrow arched into my hairline. “But today, a special for you, $10” she said quickly, exhaling a plume of blue smoke in my general direction. My eyebrow stayed where it was and I paid Cosette my ten dollars and hurried back to my bed and breakfast with my overpriced treasure. / I thought long and hard before breaking that seal, you can bet, because even with my crafty skills I wasn’t sure I could recreate the effect. But I simply had to see inside the bottle, so I carefully scraped away the wax with a nail file and pried the cork out. I was more surprised than one might think to find a curled page inside, nestled in the dust of what were doubtlessly other pages that had, tragically, disintegrated. I cursed my shaking hands as I slowly extracted the page with a pair of tweezers and carefully laid it flat. “27th August, 1854. Day Two of Our Illustrious Journey. / It is our Fondest Hope that Edwina be through with her Seasickness, and through the Beneficience of our Lord, the Day today is Fair. Eunice has been Most Generous in the sharing of her Parasol against the Glare of the unrelenting Sun, and we have been Amused by our sightings of Gulls, Pelican and Albatross, as well as intrepid Sea Creatures destined to become Repast. We have kept little Effie much Occupied with the Rowing of our Vessel, although she is Quite Tiny and the effect is mainly to turn us in Circles. Her delighted Giggles are well worth the Queasiness. Eudora has kept her Silence, as have we, seeing no Point in revisiting the Wisdom of undertaking our Journey in an Oversized Teacup, as was her Insistence. Escaping the Tyranny of our Menfolk is a Worthy Cause, no matter how Doomed its Outcome is feared to be. If it be the Will of the Heavenly Creator, no doubt our Dream of reaching an Island Paradise to call our Own will soon be Fulfilled. I sign off now to apply my Compass to just that Task. Until the Morrow, I remain Yours Truly, Esther.” In my hope – my desperate wish – that there were further missives from Esther too numerous to fit in one container, I search every “antique” store I come across for bottles, and I always have my ear tuned for a legend of four ladies and a little girl who sailed to an island in a teacup. If you hear of such a thing, please be sure to let me know. This original artwork and story are copyright Ramona Szczerba 2009. • I hadn’t long had my camera when I was sitting enjoying a cup of coffee at King John’s House in Romsey, Hampshire, UK. The small cottage garden was being tended by volunteer gardeners and they had just finished a well deserved tea break.

  • Taken at Bungay Antique Street Fayre on 12.7.09 Simon, Grace and I wandered round the wonderful main street looking at the wonderful array of objects, just so much to feast ones eyes on. It was Graces first visit to this treat and she disappeared to rummage round the stalls, as Simon and I looked at wonderful wooden boxes, cement gnomes and as you can see trays of old cutlery all lying about to be sorted through. Grace loved the experience coming home with a string of pearls,Old copy of the Hobbit and a old retro looking radio, as yet it does not work. Simon spent 2 pounds and lots of photos and I just came home with a few photos and no money spent.
