A large Buddhist Monastery is situated at the foot of the bridge. This explains the many monks and nuns that can be observed on the bridge at any time of day.

A fascinating human procession can be seen on the bridge at any time of day, but especially at sunset. A large Buddhist monastery is located at the foot of the bridge explaining the large number of monks that use it.

This huge dying teak tree, killed by greedy humans, epitomises what we are doing to our planet. This shot was taken in April 2009 in the mountains of northern Thailand where teak forests once flourished. Scores of similar giants, 2-300 years old, standing near this tree had also been illegally ringbarked in the Lum Nam Pai Wildlife Sanctuary where Dave (in photo) and I were walking. Local villagers will fell the trees when the wood is dry and handsaw it to produce planks for sale.

Before logging was banned nationwide more than a decade ago, hundreds of elephants were used in Thailand to haul logs, legally and illegally, from the dwindling primary forests. Most of the mahouts were ethnic Karen hilltribe men from northern Thailand, and in the north the most valued timber was teak. This young elephant in Mae Hong Son provinces drags and shoves teak logs.. The Karen mahout holds a sharp knife which he jabs into the top of the elephant’s head if it disobeys his instructions in Karen language. Many mahouts have lost their lives, particularly when bulls are musking. A liquid hormone secretes from their forehead into their eyes which drives them ‘crazy’. Owners usually chain them to a big tree to prevent them from running amok. This photograph was taken in the early 1980’s with nikon camera and kodachrome film.
