Hi and welcome to my art studio.! You are visitor number ...

Hi and welcome to my art studio.! You are visitor number come on in, sit down and make yourself at home, I’ll go put the kettle on :) / Framed original paintings hanging in my studio Due to the lovely Robin Pushe’e requesting i post some photos of my studio…i took a few clicks…and here it is.. my studio is a double garage that was purpose built for the job. It is detached from the house, and large enough for me to pursue all my creative projects. also you will see Madonna & Child hanging in the restaurant Chill Cafe at the Manly Arts Festival in Sydney…along with the other winning entries :) The photo was most graciously taken by the lovely bubbler Samantha Goode who was kind enough to go out of her way for me to take some photos so i would have an idea of how it all looked…Thank you so much Sam!! The centre ‘tables’ were specially made to our specifications, and the other furniture all bought from Ikea / .... piece I’m currently working on with my pencil drawing of Lost and Found sitting next to it for reference, plus lots of other references, and there’s all that lovely light pouring in the window. / Large framed originals of Midnight Blues and Polly’s Pearls on studio floor / Here’s one of Karin working on Madonna & Child on brown paper, alongside for reference are Stargazer and Jess n Jumbo Karin working on the intial stages of what will become Scuba Diva I’m using chalk pastels here to fill in the large areas, then I’ll spray fixative and work in the shadows and final touches with acrylic, ink and charcoal. / Main work area, covered in reference material. I paint on the slanted easel table, some of the sketches on brown paper for Children of the World series are visible, ie I Luv Lollies and Scuba Diva. Setting the studio up took about a year of planning from initial inception. If you look closely you can see my matryoshka (russian doll) blanks in the far background. Also notice the mirror, mirrors are very important in art, if you have a problem with a drawing, look at it in the mirror (for a reversed image) and you will be able to tell what’s wrong… turning your drawing upside down will also help to reveal where the problem is. I also use the mirror if I need a reference such as feet, hands, and don’t have an image…i will sketch my own hands, feet, face….you have to be a bit of a contortionist sometimes! lol I like to hang the things that inspire me on the clothesline, including makeshift plaits from wool and dried out teabags for use in mix media applications…special greeting cards I’ve collected along the way, or particular artists that always inspire me. / A bit boring this image, my PC and printer…and messy desk area, where I work on digital colouring, etc and keep up with what’s going on here at Red Bubble / A sample of some of my canvas prints on studio floor, including Whale Dancers Two Dolls and Pearl of the Sea storage space, purpose built for the job (it’s great to have a place for rolls of stuff and keeps things nice n clean) / (more storage and the top of these benches serves as a terrific workspace and layout area. I’ve used it to create small studio and lighting effects to photograph the CHUNKIES and jewellery. You can just make out Jack and Jill on the brown paper on top of bench Loose and matted originals out on the bench, getting sorted into display folders, and frames being sanded back and refreshed after some were damaged during gallery transit Karin at work on award winner Madonna & Child with Stargazer’s flippers peeping out! Works created on brown paper, cut out and pasted onto digitally designed or plain backgrounds for maximum effect. a clearer view of the workspace from another angle, bit messy hey! The set of drawers to the right is fabulous.. it’s on castors and moves..the drawers are slimline and pull out so easily…they are full of inks, pastels, acrylics, mediums, icecream lids (for mixing paint), stamps i’ve made from cubed erasors and lots of other odds and ends. Karin gets stuck into a painting…. am often completely unaware of how much paint gets all over my face, hair, hands… kids come home from school and just giggle at me, ‘til i realise…. i’m covered in stuff and need a good scrub :) Getting lost in the moment can do that to you :) Can you see my wool plaits I use as hair models in the background, there’s a normal plait and a fishtail plait, both help me to recreate drawings of plaits…. I also use a lot of fashion mags for reference, particular for eyes, faces and fashion ideas. My bookcase is bending under the weight of all my reference books. To the right, can you see my set of drawers? In there I store colour coded fabrics and materials for my mixed media work. view of some more storage space and looking back out into our backyard which is looking very green and tropical, there’s the large roll of brown paper I’ve been using. Madonna and Child High Gloss Mounted Print on Gatorboard hanging at a Manly Cafe in Sydney during the Manly Art Festival ‘08. Other Photos Karin with Madonna & Child (newspaper photo) Range of tshirts I ordered for friends and family for Christmas ‘08 from Red Bubble, included are Jess n Jumbo Tshirt, Pearl of the Sea TShirt, Asia Blue tshirt and Little Green Teapot tshirt / Here’s Karin with a collection of her CHUNKIES a series of characters created from plasticine! This photo was for a media release. / Karin (blurrily) modelling her niece’s Little Multicolour Teapot tee on aqua in girly fit style, sorry for the blur…definitely not blurred in real life! / Karin with Asia Calendar / Karin wearing her Pirate Chick tshirt design, purchased from Red Bubble Karin in studio wearing a tee by Keith Richardson with the ‘chop’ initials he created In the background I have large white foamcore sheets onto which i thumbtack references torn from magazines and newspapers, you can use both the front and back and they are lightweight and portabe…a large sheet of foamcore is somewhere between $10 and $20 – handy stuff. On one I have kids fashion, clothing, plaits, kids in different poses, on another depictions of faces and in particular eyes so that I can study them and keep on track with the anatomy of them, I have another one covered in roses… they are also useful for pinning a display, or an artwork on paper, so i can take it inside and view it over a period of days…then decide what it does or doesn’t need…. all this while doing the ironing and other domestic things…so the mind is ever on the go thinking about art, and solutions to creative problems. / View through the window, of some of my original works on paper, includes Thoughts Become Things (girl in bathtub) and Little Green Teapot (my most popular image on red bubble) and Heart of Gold (girl on horse), also in view are Maiden Voyage (asian inspired sailing boat), Kiss Away my Tears (mother and daughter with rabbit) and Endless Love (asian princess in navy and gold) / Here’s some of the stuff I collect when I’m walking around, twigs, coral, flowers, dried leaves, unusual seaweeds, aboriginal artefacts/axes…tools/precious rocks, dead palm fronds, grasses, paper bark, seeds, shells, dead crustacean shells, textures…etc. just a bower bird really…love shiny things that glitter too :) Can you see the dried flannel flowers in the frame? I grew them, and mum pressed and framed them for me. I also collect May Gibbs work, and there’s my son’s beautiful ship drawing to the left. / ...a few more odds n ends, including my matryoshka blanks, which I’m yet to paint! / ...tools of the trade, an assortment of coloured pencils, charcoal and brushes / Bookcase bending under the weight of reference materials I’ve collected…on top my coveted collection of ‘Art Collector’ magazine along with a stack of “art almanacs’ and ‘art gallery guide australia’... / ...bit messy, but you get the idea, drawers full of fabric and other things i’ve found, colour coded, ready to use in mixed media applications. / Display table full of promotional materials, ie postcards, pamphlets, business cards, samples of art stretched onto tiny canvases, one of my giclee resin necklaces depicting Beach Shed Chic and a couple of matryoshka dolls (collections, not my own work)... also there’s the book illustrated by myself and written by iAN Derrick called She Sells Sea Cards By the Sea Shore the the Griffith Review in which my art Baby Bull Productions was featured…plus some other books written by friend Bob and amazing vector art by Matt Mawson / ...more tools of trade, watercolour crayons and gesso….you all know how much i love gesso :) Total Visits

WOW… so far we’ve had 745 favouritings and 10,419 views since uploading this journal. Hope it helps :) Hi Everyone This would be the most FAQ I receive from other bubblers, ie, how do i enhance my profile, how do I create a link, how do I display my products on the page…. It’s so easy, very simple, just a few steps away – anyone can do it, you can do it!! Be encouraged! As I receive lots of requests for assistance about enhancing the front profile page of your red bubble homepage, I have decided to take some time to describe and explain in a step by step tutorial the various methods. / a) I always begin by opening up two tabs/windows / b) Open the ‘edit your profile page’ or the ‘edit your description’ box in the first tab/window / c) In the first window where you are editing your description, type an exclamation mark ! / d) Click to open the other tab/window / e) Go to the public view of the image whose product you wish to display / f) Click on the BUY/PREVIEW NOW button / g) You will notice there are a range of products here for you to choose from eg, card preview, print preview, laminated print preview, matted print preview / h) Click one of these options to view the product / i) Once you have chosen which product you’d like to add as a preview, right click on it and select ‘copy image location’ / j) Return to your first opened tab/window and paste the ‘copied image location’ right beside the exclamation mark / k) Add another exclamation mark after the pasted image location, leaving no spaces / YOU NOW HAVE DISPLAYED YOUR PRODUCT You can go on to make this a clickable link if desired. / l) Add a colon right next to the exclamation mark / m) Click on the second tab/window and press the back button at the top left hand side of your browser twice until it returns to the public view of your image / n) click in the url website address box at the top of your computer to highlight it / o) right click to copy the address / p) return to your first open tab/window and paste the copied url address beside the colon / YOU NOW HAVE A CLICKABLE LINK to the page from your product preview display This is very similar to how you would display a tshirt, but the tees are a littler easier, you do not need to go to the BUY/PREVIEW as you can copy the image location of your tshirt for display just by going to the main page where your image is located… bypassing that step, the rest is pretty much the same. for example below is a clickable text link / Click here to see my Calendars when you create the link it should end up looking something like this / a) I always begin by opening up two tabs/windows / b) Open the ‘edit your profile page’ or the ‘edit your description’ box in the first tab/window / c) Type one set of inverted commas / d) Type in the text, eg, “link to my website” , or “click here” / e) Type another set of inverted commas at the end of your text / f) Type a colon : / g)Click on the second tab/window and go to the website you want your text linked to / h) Right click in the url box at the top of the screen to highlight the url/website address or another page on red bubble where you are linking your text to a work of art etc / i) Paste the address right beside the colon / j) there should be no spaces whatsover / k) Click on the button to Save your changes / l) Go to preview and check the link has worked and is clickable / m) If not – recheck that you haven’t left any spaces, etc for example below is a clickable image link / It should look something like this / a) as above / b) as above / c) Type in an exclamation mark ! / d) Click on the second tab/window and go to the image you wish to add and make clickable / e) Because most images on RB are now protected with clear gifs, you cannot just copy the image itself, you will need to click on the preview/buy button to view the products, such as cards and prints, unless it’s a tshirt…which you can copy… once you’ve chosen product you wish to display….. / e) Right click on the image and choose the ‘copy image location’ option an click on it / f) Return to the first open tab in the editing box / g) Paste the image location right beside the exclamation mark / h) Type another exclamation mark, directly after the image location / i) Type a colon / j) Click on the second tab/window and go to the url address of the page your image is on / k) Click on the address to highlight it / l) Right click to copy the address / m) Return to your first tab/window and paste the url address beside the colon / n) Click to save your changes / o) Click to preview / p) You should have a clickable image link / q) If not, return to your editing and check you have left no spaces anywhere here’s an example of a clickable thumbnail / Here’s what it should like like to you / a) as above (open the edit your profile box in my bubble) / b) as above (open it up at my bubble and go to Art) / c) return to the edit your profile box / d) insert an exclamation mark / e) Click on the second tab/window / f) Locate the small thumbnail you wish to display in your profile from your Art or TShirt Section Listings in your My Bubble area / g) Right click on the small thumnail and click on copy image location / h) Click on first tab and paste the image location right beside the exclamation mark / i) Insert an exclamation mark directly after the url / j) Insert a colon directly after the exclamation mark / k) Click on your second tab/window / l) Go to the thumbnail and click on the thumbnail / m) Go to the url/website address of your image and click in the url box to highlight url address / n) Left click to copy the address / o) Return to your first tab/window (edit your profile) and past the url address directly beside the colon leaving no spaces whatsoever / p) Save your changes / q) Go to view publick view of your work / r) You should now have a clickable thumbnail / s) If not go back to edit your profile and check you’ve left no spaces and recheck your steps PS – if you wish to add a whole heap of thumbnails repeat the process, leaving one space between each thumbnail Here’s an example of a Banner / Here’s an example of what it would look like to you / I have added some nice banners to the front of my Profile Page, and folks often ask how this is done. If you have software like Photoshop and are family with it, then it should be fairly easy. I create a banner in Photoshop, using a simple rectangle shape, keeping it rather small in size …. approx 500×70 pixels (or 6×9 cm) something like that should fit fairly well in the space. I then save my file. I opened a Photobucket account especially so that I could create banners and save them to Photobucket (a free online Photo storage facility). Photobucket is very easy to use, simple and self explanatory. Once you have opened your account there you can upload your banners from your Photoshop saved files. Once you have saved your banners there, you can click on the Direct Link button beneath your thumbnail, to automatically copy the image location address. To make your banners appear in the ‘Edit your Profile’ area, or in your Description Boxes, you only need to do the following: a) as above / b) as above / c) In the edit your profile or description box, insert an exclamation mark / d) click on the second tab where you will have your Photobucket opened up / e) click on the Direct Link in Photobucket to copy the address of the banner you’ve created / f) Go to your first tab/window and paste the Direct Link image address directly beside the exclamation mark / g) Type in another exclamation mark directly after the Direct Link address / h) SAVE your changes / i) Go to View public profile / j) You should now have a beautiful new banner visible on your page / k) if not, recheck your steps and make sure you’ve left no spaces You can make your banner clickable by additionally adding a colon after the exclamation mark, and adding the url of the page you wish to link the banner to. / See example below: / / or / click here to view my tshirts In order to do this you must tag all similar works with a word, by going to edit your art work, and adding the tag to your other tags and saving your work, once you have adding the appropriate word to each of your works, to categories them… you can begin making sets to take customers to sets of your work… you can use a banner or text or an image link to do so for the first part… sandwiching the text/image/banner between two exclamation marks as we have done above. You will need to use an address like this for tshirt collection, but insert your own name instead of karin, and your own tag word, I have used tee, after the equal sign, eg / http://www.redbubble.com/people/karin/clothing?tag=tee so, you add whatever tag word you like at the end after the equal sign, and then be sure to add the tag word, in my case it’s tee, to all your tshirt designs in the tag section, (via editing) and remember to click save or if it’s an artwork collection, you would use the address below for art collections, but you need to insert your own name instead of karin, and your own tag word relative to your particular collection, in my case it’s whales, or baby, or beach, etc… : / http://www.redbubble.com/people/karin/portfolio?tag=whales so now it looks like this below, but be sure to take out any spaces, insert your own banner url address, add the colon, and your tee or portfolio address, using your own red bubble user name and your own chosen tag ! http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg188/karinlouisetaylor/JUNEBANNERSwhales.jpg !: http://www.redbubble.com/people/karin/portfolio?tag=whales From now on you will see the button below displayed on my Profile Page here at Red Bubble, and this will link you directly back to this page for further/future refence. / For more information or further enquiries please click on the following links: / Please do not hesitate to email support@redbubble.com if you are having trouble or needing help of any kind, they are only too happy to help with your enquiries HOW TO ADD THE ABOVE BUTTONS TO YOUR OWN PROFILE PAGE TO HELP OTHERS FIND HELP FAST I would actually be grateful if you added the above assistance buttons/banners and links to your own Profile Pages to spread the word to others, and make access to help more easily available to newcomers and everyone on the bubble…. spread the love around…. / You’ll find out how to do this in the Tutorial…. :) How to add the banners to your own profile page..to help other bubblers have easy access to help and assistance and spread the word around a) Open two tabs/windows in your browser / b) Click on ‘Edit your Profile” / c) Click on the second tab/window / d) Go to this journal page here / e) Scroll down until you get to the button/banner / f) Right click on the banner/button / g) click on copy image location / h) Return to the first open tab/window to ‘Edit your Profile / I) Type in an exclamation mark ! / m) Paste the image location right beside the exclamation mark leaving no spaces / n) Type in an exclamation mark right after the image location / o) Type in a colon directly beside the exclamation mark / p) click on the second window/tab and go to the url box of tutorial page to highlght the address / q) paste the url right next to the colon (leave no spaces whatsoever) What you’ve typed should look a lot like this below, without the spacing….. you musn’t leave any spaces….. if you prefer you can simply copy and paste this below information into your ‘Edit Your Profile’ box and just by removing the spaces you will have created a clickable image/banner link to the Tutorial / ! http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg188/karinlouisetaylor/bannerEnhanceYourProfile.jpg ! : http://www.redbubble.com/people/karin/journal/1964545-tutorial-how-to-enhance-your-profile Underneath is the coding to copy and past the other two buttons / ! http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg188/karinlouisetaylor/BANNERTUTORIALS.png ! : http://www.redbubble.com/people/karin/journal/1469814-linking-and-enhancing-your-profile-on-red-bubble ! http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg188/karinlouisetaylor/BANNERFAQ.png ! : http://www.redbubble.com/groups/redbubble/forums Just don’t forget to remove those spaces between the exlamation marks and colon thank you for time time in reading this…. and I would be absolutely thrilled if you shared this information with your friends…. and anyone who needs help! / A couple of months ago I was honoured to be contacted by the Griffith REVIEW which is a publication of topical essays, memoirs and reports by some of the best writers and artists Australia has to offer, which is put out by Griffith University 4 times a year in the form of a book They were enquiring whether they could use some of my art, the painting Baby Bull Production / to illustrate an essay in the upcoming edition “Essentially Creative”. The art appears, I’m proud to say, in the final essay “Visionaries, or the Cello of Katerina Valentine” by auther Helen Barnes-Bulley Helen is such a talented writer, she’s a Sydney University graduate, studied writing for performance at NIDA, had plays produced through the ABC and won an award through the Australian Writer’s Guild in ‘85, she also won the ABC National Award for Radio Drama in ‘89….whoa to be in such company is indeed a real honour Today after I received my very own 2 x copies of the book at a value of around AU$30 I was really taken aback….I hadn’t seen the publication before today, and just assumed it must just be a newspaper publication, but this is actually a beautiful soft cover book and the cover illustration is Mona Lisa by Ronald Wigman fellow bubbler / “Essentially Creative” edition 23 of Griffith REVIEW So take heart peoples and be encouraged won’t you, as both Ronald and I were found right here at red bubble

I was hoping that you might like to share what obstacles have you overcome so far and how you overcame them to reach your goals and dreams as an artist… / Fa at her PaTH Stall”:http://www.popandtalenthub.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=46&Itemid=56&edf0a59cc6e4ffd7a5b749727f74c4f4=ab8806177f736e67bf1c5627a1056ec9 My designs have been selling in Singapore at the moment because of a dear friend and fellow bubbler Frozenfa who’s following her dreams and goals. • Artist Block
    by Karin Taylor

    Artist Block / !http://images-1.redbubble.net/img/art/si…

Artist Block / Artist block, ever had it? Isn’t it horrible, one of the most devastating things that can happen to us as artists, is to feel that somehow we don’t cut it any more… that our mojo is missing, and that we will never get it back. Very disheartening for anyone who’s experienced that. Some artists never do, and for them it’s not as easily comprehended…but for those of us whom it strikes, the pain is overwhelming and the journey becomes an uphill climb. Thought I would have a look around for some tips on fighting artist block, in the hope it might be useful or helpful, as a few of my artist friends are going through it, and i myself have been through it. Sometimes, it is easily recognisable as just the ebb and flow of creativity, which happens to most artists and which is very normal…. but other times, it’s much more painful…and when it gets really painful…you know you have a case of ‘artist block’ My Tips / a) Nurture Self (indulge in something you like) / b) Self examination (what’s bothering you in personal life?) / b) Be otherly and reach out to friend (go for coffee n chat) / c) Attend to personal problems first, let the art come second for a while / d) Take time to dwell in creative spaces, such as library … books, magazines, creative material, attend art museums, cultural places, listen to music…. don’t pick up your brush or pencil….not until…. / e) Pick up your brush again, only when you feel an inkling of inspiration and an excitement inside about creating / f) If your personal life is really rough going, seek a counsellor to help get you off and running on the right track again… a chat with a good friend may or may not be enough / g) also, be careful where you spend your energies at this time, because you are fragile. Only give where you receive, stay away from negative persons who drain you at this time, just so you can recharge, refill and replenish… think of nourishing people at this time, people you rspect, people who encourage you. / h) spend you creativity in another direction entirely, a gentle way of doing this, is to take up cooking something new and exciting… write, use a diary… / i) exercise, get out into the sunlight for some sunshine on your shoulders and face…lift your face to the sun…to the sky and meditate on loftier things for a while, spend time in nature and think upon where you fit into that… you will realise you are but a small part of everything, albeit an important part and although your troubles seem enormous, this will help put them into perspective for you Now that is just what i do… but it’s not for everyone…this is my own personal journey If you’d like to share about yourself here in this journal i would love to hear the steps you take when you have artists block, and remember, you may just be helping someone else when you share your way. The important thing to remember is that there is no right or wrong way to deal with artists block, you will find your own way, and one day share that journey with others, who will need your guidance and advice and an ear to listen…or perhaps you already have :) Here are some links to try out as well: How To Fight Artist’s Block: 7 Methods by Nubby / Artists Block / Overcoming Artist’s, Writing, and Creativity Blocks / Planet Sark (also books available) Would love to hear how you deal with artists block, or if you are experiencing artists block at the moment, feel free to share also :) / it can help to talk about it..

Hello everyone :) Occasionally I just like to give stuff away, this time it’s….... / (13.8×10.6 cm or 4.2×5.5 inches) At the moment I’ve got 20 postcards of Madonna & Child to give away. They are beautiful quality, glossy prints…so nice I think you can easily frame them. Just let me know if you’d like one, and if you’re in the first 20 people that make contact, I’ll pop one out to you in the post next time I venture into the bigsmoke! Cheers, / Karin *PS : it doesn’t matter where you live, i’ll send them to anywhere :) *

  • Art - an optional extra?

What is art to you, and how do you justify it’s existence in the day to day of life? I’d like to know… Here’s a few phrases that get my head spinning: Art – an optional extra in my life? / Art – a neverending apprenticeship / Art – a must have/must do / Art – how do i justify it? Right now I’m in the situation where my family are all around, they’re on holidays, including my husband Scott. They would like me to participate with them, but my head is screaming all things art…. it’s vying for my attention, and I’m pulled in so many different directions it’s not even funny. Someone really wise once said, ‘balance… it’s everything’ and of course they are right. But it’s a really tough thing to find a balance. In my situation, where art does not make a living for me, the money I make from art is great… it’s enough to support the costs involved with creating art, a welcome relief from the days when I had to hit my husband’s hip pocket continually. But I continually struggle with the justification of continuing to produce art, when I don’t make enough to pay bills with the profits….. It’s also very hard to justify leaving the washing and ironing for 3 days straight, when one is really required to be mothering and nurturing her little family and being mother hen… and then we have our outer circle of friends, who make life all the more fun and worthwhile as well…. just how to fit it all in… the mind boggles. Since I’m an all or nothing person, i tend to give 3 days to art, 2 days to a week in intensity to family, chunks of time to my friends and loved ones…and then immersed again in art, hoping that nobody notices the imbalance and imperfections… but here and there, the custard slops out of the profiterole, and it looks messy… then i spend days to weeks procrastinating on how to tidy the mess… mess prevents me doing anything.. so until the mess is clear, i produce only more mess. Hilarious. This is my life. What’s yours like I wonder? / Scotty and I at the beach for a walk yesterday, ahhh, just relaxing… tis where i get a lot of my inspiration from…and nutting out things….it’s good to go for walks and talks, it really helps put things into perspective I find, what about you? / Family, cousins, visitors and friends…. it’s nice to have them and spend time with them…. How do you balance your art and your life? I think art is like a neverending apprenticeship, a calling, a lifetime of learning, unlike a priest, mechanic or a hairdresser, there is no assurance of an income, being an artist to me is not so much about drawing pretty pictures, but more about helping me to understand myself, my fellow beings and bringing a special dimension of enjoyment into my life, which, without doubt, would not exist without the continual desire to create and bring forth something from the web of thoughts and dreams, ideals and visions that pour through my mind during inspirational times….. without it I would feel less…. so i guess that’s why I continue to do it….so that I feel more, feel happier, feel fulfilled, enjoy getting lost in the moment, and enjoy sharing my creations with a wider audience than just my family, friends and self.

  • Red Bubble Love
    by Karin Taylor

Dear Red Bubbly people…. We were asked by Community to…

Dear Red Bubbly people…. We were asked by Community to write a journal on how Red Bubble has changed our lives.. I had already done this, but it was a written work, so I’ve adjusted it slightly and uploaded this as a journal… you can do this too and you just have to tag your journal with redbubblelove, as we would love to hear from everyone! Here we go….. Red Bubble has changed my life... I thought you should know…. I am a different person now….. people recognize me in the street….. people have respect for me as an artist now…. I have respect for myself… I found my way…. I was lost and when i reached Red Bubble, it felt like I was found… I have for a long time (well all of my life) been looking for friends, for people that were like me…. there was no-one, absolutely no-one… until I met one artist friend who lived next door for a while, then unfortunately moved away, back to England, we got on like a house on fire… that got me thinking that artists were like me… if only i could find more artists, i thought… I could have more friends that think similarly, that understand what it’s like to be an artist, to live this lifestyle…. but my biggest question was, where would i find them… hmm … this continually confounded me. One day, I came across Red Bubble, because my heart was wide open, and I knew I’d found something special… something i’d been looking for my whole life long….... friends, companionship, and people who think like i think…. it is more than just a little thing… it is a huge change for me… i feel at home at Red Bubble… like my favourite lounge chair… like sipping my favourite drink, or eating my favourite meal, or going out to my favourite restaurant… I found where i belong… Red Bubble is my watering hole, the place i go to renew my soul. It is also the place where I get to share my heart and soul with others, it’s in me to love and encourage others, there’s not enough of it around, so I pour it out lavishly on whoever will receive it… and in return they lavish love on me. There have been some hairy moments… I’ll admit that. But that’s life isn’t it… and I’m learning as I go… we all are… I am so moved and touched by the philosophy of Red Bubble, and how you accept everyone, it ties in well with my own philosophy of acceptance and encouragement. Not everyone feels the same way, but that’s okay, different strokes for different folks and all that. I don’t know where I’d be today without Red Bubble, it was there for me at a very difficult time in my artistic and my personal life, where i felt all other doors had closed to me….. It seemed to me then that all other avenues to expressing my art in the community seemed to have dried up and I was at a loss as to what to do, I almost gave up. It’s extremely important for me to me to see my art go full circle… I like to see my art sell, to create is not enough for me, it must not only be expressed, but shared and loved enough to be received into someone’s heart and home. Red Bubble gives me this opportunity each and every minute of every day…this is what i appreciate. I would just like to say all this to you now… as it seems rather apt and timely to do so… you have embraced me, my art, who i am… I cannot thank you all enough… also for your understanding my wobblier moments… you dealt with things perfectly. I also would like to mention that because of Red Bubble, the following wonderful things have happened to me in the last year and a half since I became a member, and all of them happened because i was ‘seen’ by others on Red Bubble, who since contacted me and contracted me… I realise that I forgot to mention previously, in my letter of thanks, that I have been afforded a number of opportunities because of my presence on Red Bubble.. 1. An art licensing agent in the USA discovered me and signed me up for a 2 year contract 2. A lingerie company in the UK asked me to design art for their start up 3. A company in the USA contracted me to create 5 designs for a children’s entertainment business that might go global 4. Through the art licensing agent I was contracted for 2 years by one of the largest mobile phone companies in the USA FunMobility to have 8 of my designs resold as wallpapers 5. I was made aware of a competition conducted through Creative Mums online website and my entry Madonna and Child was one of the chosen entries, in under 4 months, this artwork received almost 6,000 views 6. I have sold many of my works and received respect in my community 7. I have a contract with a company in China who are manufacturing prints for retail outlets using one of my designs 8. My work is appearing on thousands of reggae party posters and brochures coming up in September, October, November in Denmark through a deal with someone I met through Red Bubble (not a member) 8. I have met many new friends and contacts, including Frozenfa who is a member here at Red Bubble, without her support I doubt I would still be a member as she bouyed me when I was down, encouraged me to hang in there when times were low and sales were less than abundant, Fa now sells her work and my work together at markets in Singapore, such a friend and support she has been, that words seem inadequate… My huge thanks will always go out to muscularteeth who I adopted as a brother, and what a dear friend he turned out to be… I would not have continued on RB without the support of people like him and Fa… even tho RB is a wonderful place to be, it’s the special people, the characters I identify with here, are what makes this place…. the staff, the admin….not just this thing called RB… for without the love, it would be nothing. 9. Griffith University used one of my paintings Baby Bull Production in their periodical, they found my work on Red Bubble and emailed me, we talked on the phone, and it was another great opportunity for me, for which I’m very grateful 10. I’ve met the likes of iAN Derrick, Matt Mawson and his lovely sister, ginnymac, my dear friend natsky, Vicki Ferrrari, drec, etc in person and I learned that the members of red bubble are living, breathing, real people and it’s wonderful to know them and feel encouraged by them (forgive me if we’ve met and i haven’t mentioned you, but I feel like I’ve met you all in a funny way :) 11. 2008 my CHUNKIES were featured online at Thunderchunky 12. I’ve learned to understand that there are many different ways to look at things, many different talented people under the sun, and i am content and happy to be just one of them, that goes to making this whole creative world spin ‘round. There have been so many of you that have helped me, that have loved me through thick and thin…and believe me, i am very thick at times … what can I say to you all…each and every single one of you knows that special contact we have had…those special words of encouragement like blessings that we have spoken over one another, those difficult times we have shared….. and there are too many of you to mention here, my soul feels full of goodwill toward you all and I cannot thank you enough for showing me that there is kindness, love, thoughtfulness, unselfishness here, as far as the eye can see, as strong as the heart can beat, and that you all went far beyond my expectations. I love you all… Fascinating and brilliant, a whole new life…thank you Red Bubble Thank you everyone…. Big love / from Karin

  • This morning I was in town and came across this quote by Ralf Waldo Emerson (well i think that’s who wrote it)...I was so moved, a little tear formed and i had to compose myself lol (and i bought the card home just so I could share it with you) I thought or hoped you might like it too, and sure that many of you already know it. Sometimes I think we can feel that we don’t have much impact on the world… if that’s how you feel, you must promise to watch It’s a Wonderful Life (Plot: An angel helps a compassionate but despairingly frustrated businessman by showing what life would had been like if he never existed, a film about courage and sacrifice) and read this poem below: PS… you may need a hanky for this.. i get teary every time :) To laugh often and much, / to win the respect of intelligent people / and the affection of children, / to earn the appreciation of honest critics / and endure the betrayal of false friends; / to appreciate beauty, / to find the best in others, / to leave the world a bit better, / whether by a healthy child, / a garden patch, / or a redeemed social condition; / to know even one life has breathed easier / because you have lived, / this is to have succeeded.

Hi everyone, Well, we spent a long day in the studio today hanging paintings and it’s so satisfying to finally have this all done now. It feels great, more spacious and more like a real gallery. We’ve had the hanging system lying on the floor of the studio for well over a year now, and never got round to actually putting it up, so I thought I’d share a couple of pics with you guys!! I don’t think I’ve ever mentioned it before, but I have lots of original paintings for sale, if anyone is ever interested in the original work, give me a yell and we can talk turkey :) I have lots and lots that are unframed too and you can’t see ‘em here .. so let me know if you see something you like in my portfolio and would like the original

Have you ever felt lost…..? This little orca got separated from his family / / but then he found them again, they were just around the next iceberg! (reunited below) / / Little Lost Orca became quite famous for getting frequently lost and found, so much so, that his parents made up tshirts and posters to paste on billboards as a way of keeping tabs on him, so in the event that a stranger should find him and see the tshirts and posters (see below) they would identify him and help him return to his pod! / / Late last night, some special person decided to buy a tshirt to wear with Little Lost Orca on the front / / from my Migaloomagic store, thank you so much!!!

/ ... here’s a little sneak preview of what I’m working on right now :) This is only a cropped view of it, I’m saving the whole thing for later when it’s completely coloured.. and then I’ll show you the rest. So far, it’s taken me 15 hours to draw it, with lots of detail required for the wicker weave in the pram. I like detail, but this was seriously a lot of work! lol Phew! Glad I’ve finished the drawing, and look forward to the process of colouring now, probably digitally… but I can only work at short intervals… all this close work is hurting my eyeballs :) Happy creating everyone!

Expressing, transforming and clarifying the shades of limelight that frame our body image My friend and fellow bubbler Sarah O’Rourke is part of the team co-ordinating the Mirrors Charity Art Exhibition along with Rhiannon Bulley, which is being held from the 15th to 24th October 2009 at the Mori Gallery, 168 Day Street, Darling Harbour, Sydney, the opening night is 14th October 6-8pm. The red bubble members, along with myself, who are donating art works to the Mirrors Exhibition are as follows (in no particular order): Sarah O’Rourke / Cynthia Lund Torroll / aWarr / Bec Winnel / Caitlin Shearer / Steph Granshaw / Remus Grecu / Mimi Yoon Here is a recent article which lends more of an insight into the exhibition and it’s founder Rhiannon Bulley in which I’ve had my own work Lost and Found featured, and I’d like to take the opportunity to say thank you to Rhiannon for featuring my work on both blogs. I am donating my framed original painting of Hidden Treasure pictured above with the chook to the exhibition The event also has the support of medical groups, including the Centre for Eating and Dieting Disorders, the Eating Disorders Association (Qld) and The Butterfly Foundation, to whom all funds from sales will be donated. I’d like to take this opportunity to wish Sarah and Rhiannon and all the other artists involved the very best in the exhibition and I hope it’s a huge success.

  • Mirrors: A Charity Art Exhibition: Opening Night...
    by Sarah ORourke

“Beauty is not just an image, it’s a feeling” *Wedne…

“Beauty is not just an image, it’s a feeling” Wednesday night saw the opening of the Mirrors Art Exhibtion, a charity event to benefit The Butterfly foundation, raising funds & awareness surrounding the complex issues of Eating Disorders & Body Image through Art. / The Gold framed mirror that nearly wasn’t… I found this frame in a council clean-up… & a friend had a 3m wall mounted Mirror he was desperate to get rid of… perfect for the event! Until the glass cutter wouldn’t go through as it was hardened glass! So i purchased a new piece, it was delivered with glue still wet just in time! / / You can read the full text written on the Mirror here As many of you will already know, alongside the events founder, Rhiannon Bulley, i’ve been involved in the organisation of the exhibition this year & was blessed with the support of several artists right here on the Bubble. / They included: Karin Taylor Cynthia Lund Torroll Bec Winnel Caitlin Shearer Steph Granshaw Mimi Yoon AWarr Remus Grecu Despite being supported by cool fashion & art mag Yen, no-one seemed to be too concerned with being “fashionably late”, in fact there were people sticky beaking from 5PM onwards… the show wasn’t billed to open until 6! It was a diverse crowd that flowed through the doors… From trendy young things to Mums with toddlers, Sharply dressed men who knew more than a thing or two about art to teenage boys who to my great surprise were incredibly interested in both the art & the issues. The several “creative spaces”, aimed at encouraging personal expression were warmly embraced… / / The Drawing Table / / Communal Canvasses… / / In progess… / / Finished!... Until the next person picks up the paintbrush! I started off the night managing the payment desk until my Dad kindly relieved me when a flood of people i knew arrived… I never made it back to the table… everytime i turned around there was another artist or friend, an opportunity to elaborate on an artwork & the creative force behind it, or a new face to meet… i would say the crowd more than tripled last years attendance, where i was merely someone who submitted a painting, & as part of the team this year, I couldn’t have been happier with the turn out… / / Serious Art Critics? / / Sisters / / Sisters 2: The little one & the adopted one Aside from the number & mix of people there, what made the night a success was the feeling amongst the crowd… And it wasn’t just the champagne & cupcakes… nor solely the wonderful art on the walls… people were genuinely interested in seeing such heavy issues cast in a different light… Books by artist Cindy Wider & Author whom herself beat Anorexia, Melinda Hutchings were donated to be raffled… / we had to enlist my Dad to get the attention of the chattering crowd… / / ...Although the serious concentration of the pair at the creative writing table in the foreground was unbreakable!... / / ...Rhiannon rewarded my Dad’s crowd control skills by drawing out his winning ticket! Whilst the seriouness of a deadly illness such as Anorexia can’t, & shouldn’t, be diluted in any way… the pervading feeling was one of hope… that where maybe the conventional wisdom is failing so many… perhaps there is another way. / No better example of this was found in a friend of a friend… A mother whose Daughter’s Best Friend has been battling Anorexia & is currently being treated in hospital for the 3rd time in the last 9 months… she relayed the all too familiar heartache of a family who feel helpless, & a girl who feels she lost her Best Friend… Despite her obvious sadness & concern for this young girl, her face lit up as she excitedly explained that this young girl was herself a talented artist… her work featured in Art Express, despite her illness preventing her from completing her HSC… and just maybe something in Mirrors, or the concept of the event itself, just might reach her. The hope was that she might be well enough to visit on day release… But where there is a will there is a way… if she can’t come to Mirrors then i may take Mirrors to her… whilst i can’t very well carry paintings in to the hospital, i can take photos… & hopefully a little of the feeling it’s all inspired. This dresser was the centrepiece of a shoot by photographer Louise Whelan / / _An old friend who worked for my Dad when i was a kid, Lou & i caught up a few months ago… / / ...The dresser & the concept for her shoot were already in motion before i even mentioned The Mirrors Exhibtion… / / ...It was naturally perfect for the exhibition… sweet synchronicity once again! Next week, once Mirrors begins to wind down i will be posting a complete photo gallery of as many works as possible, including the work of all my wonderful Bubblers, & a bit of a wrap on sales, funds raised & a few other little surprises! / The one sneak peek i can give you is at my own piece for the exhibition, What If I’m A Mermeaid… and in an unexpected twist, last week we discovered that Nature Colours Beauty my painting from last year, whilst paid for in full, was never picked up… fortunately it was quickly sold once again! Although i have already expressed my gratitude, both publicly & privately, to all of the Red Bubble artists involved i cannot rave about the success of the night without mentioning once more just how grateful i am… when i began seeking artists for this project i must admit there was some nervous hesitation, i am not one to ask for help or favours generally… But my belief in the Mirrors concept & cause overrode that & i’m so thankful it did… Not only for the benefit of the exhibition but it began what have turned into some very special friendships… there’s the power of art for you right there. / Yet i’m still amazed at the willingness & support i & the exhibition have received, especially since posting this journal in the lead up to the event… & in hindsight it would seem that a great number of you would have loved to be involved… & we’d have loved to have you… so although this years exhibition is still hanging on the walls, whilst it’s fresh in mind, if you’re interested in being involved in Mirrors in some way in the future, please leave me a comment here or drop me a bmail & i’ll compile a little list for reference when we begin planning for next year. Thankyou all for your love, support & encouragement, / Xxx Sarah / The Lead up / Photo Gallery

Friend of mine on the bubble gottheshot...

Friend of mine on the bubble gottheshot recently reminded me of The Golden Ratio (wiki) For thousands of years, the fact that aesthetic beauty could be determined by mathematical relationships baffled mathematicians, yet the truth of it is hard to deny. Read more: http://math.suite101.com/article.cfm/the_golden_ratio#ixzz0UzaOwIW2 Read more about The Golden Ratio at Wikipedia Although fascinating…....a perfect face does not always hold my attention for long, ie, Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie…etc…..and I will often prefer the qualities of the more imperfect face with the character shining through, such as Geoffrey Rush from Pirates of the Carribean and Shine, although I do love Johnny Depp (but more in the guise of Captain Jack Sparrow than in his natural form or the pale face he wears in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and white makeup in Edward Scissorhands…. anyway, interesting to note, that after a while, i tire and get bored with the perfect facial features of some of the stars, it seems to get a bit bland after a while…although we may be initially drawn to the beauty of the perfect face, over time, do we prefer the more interesting characteristics of the imperfect face…..there is perhaps less beauty/more character, which to me equates to beauty in the long term I guess…hmmm the qualities of an imperfect face are perfection after all it seems? Here’s a very interesting article In Depth Beauty – Part Two by Australian scientist Dr Karl S. Kruszelnicki

Here’s a preview of a drawing I was working on last night :) / / love those iPhone filters, they give this ancient effect / / Sorry about the wait! lol… / inspiration – Agnes of Rome – the virgin martyr (wikepedia) / no surprises really, i grew up here lost in gazes at statues depicting the virgin mary, the lamb of God, the mother holding the baby Jesus and of course, St Agnes with her flowing hair…it was a world of mystery and one that i felt fully immersed in… it was the place where my spiritual roots became manifest…...and we focussed a whole lot on the saints when I was growing up….my favourite saints were always St Agnes, a martyr, who’s flowing hair miraculously grew to cover her naked body as she was forced at age 13 to walk the street to her death naked for refusing to follow the order to marry (she was betrothed to God and chose to remain his …. such integrity)... in order to protect her from sneers and rape….God grows her hair, and when they try to burn her at the stake, the timber won’t light…and there was a third thing…but they got her i the end with the old ‘let’s just chop off her head’ (poor little thing) routine. She is the patron saint of young girls and rape victims. methinx that other 2 saints i loved dearly were St Stephen (i think that’s him) who was stoned to death, he was a loyal young man with a heart for God…I was mighty impressed with that young fellow….he was tried at aged 35 for blasphemy for speaking out against what i gather was hypocrisy? (i think) by a synogogue of Jews…. he was stoned to death by the local townsfolk while gazing upward to heaven in prayer. Anyway’s it’s all a bit convoluted and difficult to understand… but he was wrongly tried according to the records… and this synogogue duped the records to get poor old Stephen killed (read about it more here / / ....and i always loved King David whether or not he was a saint, I dunno (doubt it)....he was a pretty human sorta bloke…got into all sorts of trouble, having affairs, murdering people….but in the end he humbled himself and turned out pretty okay…. really loved David. / ... Ps… Although I am a believer and follow Christ I thought it interesting to add that my father is Jewish and my mother Irish Catholic.. An interesting mix, I am proud of both … I only learned my father was Jewish after I’d named my children Hebrew names, Sarah and Benjamin… Very interesting that upon a visit through my fathers family tree we find it awash with Sarah’s and Benjamins I’d never heard of, or known about.

Happy New Year everyone!! Thank you to everyone who supported and encouraged me in 2009, for those that were there in the hard times I’ve really appreciated it guys and to show that appreciation, in 2010 I’ve started a new blog: / / Please bmail or email me (karintaylor@exemail.com.au) if you suffer from anxiety, depression, stress or other illness and you find drawing relieves the symptoms. I’d like to feature people on my blog, but i need you to answer the following questions, along with links to your drawings or small file attachments (your work will only be used for the purpose of the feature and for no other profitable means) The questions are as follows and I’ve included my own (sample) answers to give an idea of what I’m looking for: 1. Why do you love drawing? / eg I love drawing because it takes me into another dimension where I am weightless, buoyant and lifted from all earthly and wordly troubles and i get to express myself in a very special way, I feel fulfilled and whole after I complete a drawing, much like swimming laps or completing an exercise routine, there is a feeling of achievement. / 2. Has drawing helped to relieve symptoms of anxiety, depression, stress or illness? / Yes, whilst I’m drawing I’m on a different plane, and rarely think of or notice physical symptoms, headaches disappear, stress is gone, depression disappears for the moment, I am unaware of my anxiety and it’s a very good feeling….once I’m back from the drawing, symptoms return, but somewhat less….and I do feel much better. / 3. Where is your favourite drawing place? / I like to get cosy on my bed to draw, legs crossed or use my legs as a balance for the drawing board…i have a pile of pencils, erasers, etc…in an old cellophane fruit container….and my big pad of paper….and that’s where i feel most comfy and happy drawing ..... / My own drawings are being uploaded to the blog also as this year I will have an excess of drawings and probably not upload all of them here to the bubble, as I’m only uploading one artwork per week here, as is my New Year’s Resolution to take life easier, and I will use the blog as a way of finding wholeness and wellbeing through focussing on what works and helps keep depression at bay, according to you and according to whatever i learn through experience or research, that may include comedy, music, cognitive behavioural therapy and other things that i find helpful, or things you bring to my notice….i want to be able to tell your stories, in order to encourage myself and others in 2010 / ..... Thank you for listening! I look forward to hearing from you…Happy New Year !!! / ps…there is a link to my new blog on the front of my portfolio here at redbubble, so if you can’t find where to go or lose sight of this journal…don’t forget to look on my front page! :)
