Hi everyone! / I have just created a 2008 Calendar, featuring images from Tasmania! A perfect gift idea for those that love everything about the Apple Isle! 10% of all sales will also be donated to the Tasmanian Devil Appeal. As you may or may not be aware, on Thursday 22nd November 2007 the status of the Tasmanian Devil was lifted from Vulnerable to Endangered. We need to help support the research into beating the cause of their status change; Devil Facial Tumour Disease. So please, if you wish to help out a wonderful appeal and purchase a piece of Tasmania (via the photographic medium, of course!) send me either an email or a Bubblemail (if you are a RedBubble member) and I will get an order happening for you! Cheers Kel / xx P.S The price is $30.00 per calendar! / / / /

/ Cruising by Mark Higgins Possibly the most awesome early birthday present ever – a long weekend in Tasmania I think it’s supposed to be a mushy couple thing, but I insisted on at least one afternoon of bubbler fun. The boat lands early on April 24th and we’re driving around for a few days doing the tourist thing and drinking coffee at every cafe on the way. Ideas? Places to visit? People to see? Things to do? What & Who to photograph? Where to stay? So excited.

An image taken in the Tarkine Forests of Tasmania! / Feeling rather devastated today, as part of our beautiful Tarkine Forest here on the West Coast of Tasmania has been totally devastated by a bushfire! These “old growth” forests contain so much of our native flora and fauna, it is simply devastating to see them burning! As I write this, our firemen are down there risking their lives to protect and save what they can, though high temperatures and rising winds are making it nearly impossible!! / My husband and I spend a lot of time bushwalking in these areas, to us the raw beauty is simply amazing, and it’s so sad knowing it will never be the same in our lifetime! / It is so hard to believe the image above no longer exists, for I captured it in an area now totally devastated!

As you might remember, for my birthday James gave me a trip to Tasmania, which makes me totally and utterly spoiled rotten. (and very happy, tee hee) So how does one have a Tasmanian Holiday? / Start by getting on the Spirit Of Tasmania. There was this crazy guy doing all the announcements and he kept giggling and then trailing off at the end of each one…. strange. / Have a “Final Destination Moment” on the way from the ship. If you don’t get that, you’re not cool enough. / Prepare for self portraits by testing all the furniture for it’s climbability… result? Low climbability options, proceed with care and a cup of tea. / Visit some cows, lots of cows. Black cows, spotty cows, even cows with flies on their ears. / Learn how to do landscape photography without even looking at what you are doing. James calls this “Landscape photography 101.” I call it silly. / Take embarrassing tourist photos of unwashed hair in front of a vaguely attractive looking landscape from a lookout that takes ages to get to and isn’t worth the effort. / Visit sheep… / Many sheep… It’s at about this point that I should confess that the highlight of my trip to Tasmania was sheep. I love sheep, and wool, and it was so sheepy and so woolly. ah, love the sheep…. baaaaaaa! / Stay in dodgy accommodation (not that it matters, we were sleepy by this point) / Have many many toilet stops. So James can take many embarrassing photos of said stops. / Eat awesome food and take Hien-style photos of the food while telling James he has to wait until I get a good shot. He was hungry. Sorry hon. / Take photos under fences of grass and pretty trees and stuff that I never take photos of. / Drive up and down nine mile beach until Jo chucks a tantrum and makes James go back to the first look out we saw and then insist it was another one and then realise she is wrong and chucks another tantrum. / Have RedBubble meet ups with the Tasmanian Locals. Of course in Tasmania, five minutes down the road is a ‘long distance’ so they might not consider themselves as local as we did. “Are you local?” (If you get that joke, I love you and you are a huge geek) / Stop several times and stay on the alert for “the tree” for many hours before James can swerve off the road to take a photo with power lines in it. / Find crazy camping grounds where they are obviously killing all their naughty visitors and warning off other naughty people by hanging their victims’ shoes out the front. / Be majorly big tourists and carry heavy cameras around busy markets and buy nice photography books which have nothing to do with Tasmania as souvenirs / What was that? Jo is into sheep and wool? Yes I actually dragged him into the wool centre so that I could touch and feel all the different types of wool and re-educate myself on the production process from sheep to suit. Um…. / Say hi to Rambo / James says that this was his ‘careful planning of schedules.’ I say it is technology dependency. / Have an unplanned and surprisingly good last stop to kill time before getting back on the ship. The guy who owned the place was going around offering to take people’s photos which we saw right through- he just wanted to play with people’s cameras. / This has nothing to do with Tasmania… James made me add it

I went spelunking at Gunns Plains Caves today… Oh okay… I admit… it was far from “real” spelunking, no frontiers were forged nor were there any death defying leaps into any great deep dark abysses. My spelunking experience today was nicely rounded out with a guide who delivered the obligatory witticisms, nice safe concrete steps and pathways, and hand railings for when the going got even the teensiest bit treacherous. And I have to say for the non-mountain goat me, that is just the way I like it :) It also must be said that even with all these safety precautions I still managed to leave a decent chunk of my scalp on Panadol Rock when I didn’t duck quite far enough. All the wonderful formations were beautifully lit to make the most of their natural gorgeousness. Only thing was… there were too many people in our group to be able to stop and take all the photos that I wanted to, so I was rather disappointed with the meagre images I did manage to snap. All is not lost however (unlike myself who did manage to get myself temporarily lost when I hung back to try and get at least one decent shot… thanks god for the exit signs!!! Oh yes, it really was frontier spelunking… complete with “this way out” signs) Our gracious tour guide Geoff must have sensed my disappointment for as we left the cave he pulled me aside and said that if I gave them a call in winter they would be happy to organise my very own solo photoshoot in the caves. Yes… I am a happy girly indeed. Thought I would share a few of the (just) salvagable shots from today. Hope you like them :)

A small group of Tasmanian photographers from NW Coast are organising an exhibition of work to be held at the Stanley town hall during the Australia day long weekend, opening on the evening of the 23rd and closing on the Monday around 1pm. I am lucky to be included in the group. Many of my images from the area that are on Red Bubble will be exhibited during the time and I will be staying at Stanley over the weekend. My work will also be for sale along with the other exhibitors. Anyone who happens to be in Tasmania at the time, may want to call in and say hello to us all. My thanks go to those that live in the area that are doing most of the legwork to facilitate this. Those who are exhibiting are David Murphy / Garth Smith / Phillip Wise / Anne O’Connor / Rhana Griffin / Tasadam / Photoj / Heath Holden Hope to see you there / Anne

Hi all – Over the past three weeks I have been doing a lot of travel around the place and have visited the North Island of New Zealand and spent 9 days driving around Tasmania on holidays. I had a wonderful time travelling and spent much of it taking pictures (mostly above the water). I have a few new photogrpahs to upload, which I will be doing in the coming days. In other big news for me, I proposed to Sophie on the beach on Wineglass Bay in Tasmania last week, and she said yes, so we are now engaged. It is a very happy time for us and our families.

Last night was a freezing 2 degrees and I ended up getting a slight chest cold over night, so this morning as I was just about to ride to Uni for my photography class, I started coughing, sniffling, sneezing and feeling like rubbish, had trouble breathing and basically not feeling great. I decided at the last minute that riding 10km to class on a frosty morning with a chest cold probably wasn’t going to end with smiles so I chose to go back to bed and spend the day keeping warm and relaxing. At around 1pm I was sitting at my laptop doing some research on a new camera I’m looking at purchasing for a project I’m working on, my girlfriend didn’t have to start work until 3 so she was sitting at the dining table sorting through the recent few days of junk mail that had piled up to about a foot high when she came across a letter addressed to me from the University of Tasmania where I study. I thought, oh crap I wonder how long that’s been there, knowing that letters from the Uni’s head office are always important and usually require a fast response. I opened it up not knowing what to expect, but suspecting they wanted more money from me for whatever reason. Well to my pleasant surprise it was a letter from the Vice-Chancellor of UTAS saying that I had been invited to join the International Honour Society for being rated in the top 15% of students at my uni (the academy of the arts). / I read the enclosed documents and found some of the members of the IHS include actor Bill Cosby, astronaut Roberta Bondar, former president Ronald W. Reagan, former swimmer Ian Thorpe and a heap of others. I knew I’d received some hi distinctions and a few other distinctions (mainly in photography and digital media) over my 4 years at uni but growing up I was always a C+ student, always tried hard but never good enough. In fact art was my worst subject. I remember thinking about it just a few nights ago in bed and feeling a bit depressed over it. I just wanted to come on here and share my little slice of happiness with my RedBubble friends. Even when I’ve felt absolutely lost and wondering if what I’m doing is of any value, to me or to anyone else, the RB community has always had my back and inspired me to keep going. To be a better person. A very nice surprise to make me feel warmer on this cold Tasmanian afternoon. – Cam http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Golden_Key_International_Honour_Society

School holidays have arrived, the Easter Bunny has been and delivered a rather large supply of chocolate and now its time to start packing for the next adventure. My hubby and I are leaving the kids with my parents and we’re heading to Tasmania for a week. We’ve hired a camper van and we’re going to drive ourselves around the countryside. We’ve got it all mapped out and not surprisingly, everything is worked out around sunrise and sunset locations. So, I’ll catch up with you in a few weeks and hopefully, Tassy will have turned on some great weather and I’ll have some good shots to share with you. BTW – had to share this with you too – My image, Vintage Surfer was chosen as one of the 50 images selected for exhibition in the 21st Heritage Acquisitive Photographic Awards 2009. I’m stoked as there were apparently over 600 entries this year. You can check out a tad more on the comp if you click here I’ll catch ya later.. / Naomi / ;0)

Hi everyone, sorry for the week of no redbubble activity, I have been taking a photographic holiday in Tasmania! Got back yesterday and after driving a loop of Tasmania, kinda tired!! So much for a holiday :) What a beautiful land Tasmania is, from the moment I started on the highway out of Launceston, I was captivated with the beautiful landscape. If only there were larger shoulders on the highways, I could have stopped more!! Of the 6 days there, 3 were rainy, I think that is quite normal odds, but thankful it held up for the most important days, where driving travel was limited, and photography was the main part of the day. Over the next few weeks, I will be uploading my photos of the trip. One of the things I learnt about the place, 6 days is NOT ENOUGH!!! In fact, 6 weeks wouldn’t be enough :) I hope you enjoy my shots, and if you havn’t been, I hope it inspires you to visit there soon, it’s well worth it! Adam :)

Hi everyone, Now that spring has finally sprung down here on the little island, I am thinking of putting together an outing to the Tarkine Rainforest up near Meunna way. Normally a guided two and a half hour walk through the gorgeous rainforest surrounding the Tarkine Wilderness Lodge plus a delicious barbecue (or home cooked meal if the weather isn’t perfect) costs $55 per person. However our gracious host, Maree Jenkins, who has taken yours truly on the same walk many times with my camera understands that time works differently for us photographers. So she has kindly agreed to extend this to a half day walk at no extra cost. The walk is suitable for all levels of fitness, although there are some uppy/downy bits :) I’m thinking we should organise this for some time in the next 4 to 6 weeks on either a Saturday or Sunday. For those that may want to stay the night, accomodation will be available at The Lodge, or alternatively Meunna is halfway between Burnie and Stanley for alternative accommodation. Edit: I forgot to mention that there is plenty of holiday accommodation in the most gorgeous place on the planet too. That would be my little coastal village of Sisters Beach ;) If you think this sounds like something you might be interested in, either register your interest here, or send me a bubblemail. We would need at least five to ten people before we start looking at making any concrete plans. Just to get your shutter finger excited, below are some images I have taken over several walks through this area ;) And just for giggles… if you are very lucky, you may catch a glimpse of the extremely rare and elusive Canon Wombat with her baby on her back. Apparently she is a one of a kind ;)
