pencil and ink. was feeling a little tangled when i drew this, pulled in all directions if you know what i mean house work ,kids, cooking, shopping ,husband ,problems ,worries things become tangled and you feel a little trapped sometimes.

16×20 acrylic on canvas This idea came to me after watching Man Vs. Wild on the Discovery Channel. The episode was basically about Bear vs. the Mangroves in I believe Tailand? (Correct me if i’m wrong though!) I always thought of the mangroves as this beautiful tropical area, and inside of them it’s really sort of gross, the bacteria filled waters, all the dead roots and animals and bugs everywhere. I was sort of grossed out. This Painting is the way that I saw the Mangroves in my own head before actually seeing them with my own eyes. These birds are all native birds to Mangroves in different regions. The Egret, Red Lory and Mangrove Pitta birds. I really like the way that it came out, and I hope you do to! 5th place in the Mother Nature and our Environment / Global Warming Effects Challenge in the First Things Group

Townsville’s tropical trees are twisted, tangled and photogenic. I came across one huge tree with dozens of trunks entwining. I couldn’t stop snapping. Some of the shots turned out spooky and mysterious. I think that tree had me under its spell… Nikon D60 with Nikkor 50mm f/1.8 lens. May 2009. All of my children have had (or still have) curly hair, I cannot count the number of knots I’ve unknotted… Mila’s are especially bad as she winds her curls around her fingers until they’re completely entangled, sometimes trapping her fingers in the process. I love the quietness on her face in this portrait, and her eye lashes against her cheeks.
