the combination of religiosity and hatred of others is common. history is riddled with extreme examples. it is interesting that one person can hold such seemingly opposing characteristics, but often, upon closer inspection, ‘high ideals’ are generated from the same contempt for self that is projected onto others-where, in a world of shame and failure, no one escapes-not even the ‘faithful’. individuals who have experienced extreme spiritual abuse have often been abused in other ways by the the perpetrators of the spiritual abuse. sexual abuse and physical abuse are often reported as having been perpetrated by the same individuals that demanded extreme religiosity from their victims. people die. the television networks portray death and violence as daily meat and potatoes. consequently, as viewers we have a skewed vision of how horrible the world is. we believe that strangers are killing strangers because we don’t get the backstory. when strangers killing strangers pervades the mindset, we are alienated and fearful of each other. we live in fear of the unforeseeable stranger assault. we look over there while the danger is over here. yes, there is stranger danger as we teach our children, but the people likely to harm children are well known to the child victims. —for all my child clients who have died at home and who continue to fear those that ‘love’ them.
