by Rob BryantOne of the earliest mantis references is in the ancient Chinese dictionary Erya, which gives its attributes in poetry (representing courage and fearlessness), as well as a brief description. A later text, the Jingshi Zhenglei Daguan Bencao 經史證類大觀本草 (“Bencao of the Daguan period, Annotated and Arranged by Types, Based upon the Classics and Historical Works”) from 1108, is impressively correct on the construction of the egg packages, the development cycle, the anatomy and even the function of the antennae.

Traveling Again by Du Fu I remember the temple, this route I’ve travelled before, / I recall the bridge as I cross it again. / It seems the hills and rivers have been waiting, / The flowers and willows all are selfless now. / The field is sleek and vivid, thin mist shines, / On soft sand, the sunlight’s colour shows it’s late. / All the traveller’s sorrow fades away, / What better place to rest than this?

I took this photo before my camera died…. (pout) I applied the orton effect to it, did a little mirroring to enlarge the image, and worked on the lighting a bit.
