As much as we all hope to get people viewing our work and getting feedback on what we put our blood, sweat and tears into, it dosn’t always happen. I have a great concept that would share the love around. If everytime someone logs onto Red Bubble and visits a minimum of three people and leaves some constructive and insightful comment, it would leave everyone feeling good about their work and having some frame of reference to improve or enhance the way we market ourselves. So if you guys want to start a sought of pay it forward concept I think it would be great. / So the concept is. - if you get a comment on your work, go and view 3 other artists work and leave a comment with each of them. - if you have the time so we get the ball rolling, start leaving three messages everytime you log onto Red Bubble with or without recieving any messages/comments. - When you leave a comment you could suggest to have that person also view one of your images also in that comment. I’d love to know what you guys think of this idea so please leave some feedback for me to go on? / Anyway I shall go and start the avalanche with a pebble or the ripple in the pond. / Thanks all you bubblers out there for taking the time to read this. / Good luck to all and keep spreading the love. / All for one and one for all !!! As some of you may know from my previous journal entries that I recently acquired a new lens (Canon 100-400 IS). The lens has been great, BUT it has attracted allot of attention and brought allot of attention towards me while out and about shooting. In the past month I have received more “comments” about my gear then I have in the whole time I’ve been shooting! :P Here are some examples of the comments I’ve overheard since I got this lens: “Look at the size of that lens” / “That must have cost a fortune” / “Thats a really big camera” / “Look mummy that man has a telescope” / “Thats a F ‘in big a** lens” / “That must be heavy to carry around all day long” / “Thats a lens only professionals use” / Lots of Wows And lots of stares at me and my camera by other photographers, then the disappointed look at their own cameras! LOL So if your looking for a lens for candid and street photography, it might be best you look for something a little less conspicuous! Anyone else have any similar experiences with working with their gear??

I have a few thoughts about the new reply feature. / Is this going to turn RB into a social website rather than an art website? / I personaly like to thank people by visiting their page and checking out their work as a way to say thanks. I think having the non-reply feature encourages people to do the same. Dont get me wrong I greatly appreciate EVERYONES comments and faves, but I really think this may be the downward spiral of the bubble. I think it may bring more non-artists to the site just to be social, make friends and chit-chat rather than focusing on the art. This feature will be great for many comments but more a pain in the ass for others. It may also make RB more time consuming feeding through replies that just say thanks when you could be at their page viewing their work. For all those out there DO NOT feel obligated to say thanks to the comments I give. When I comment on your work I am sharing my thoughts and that is all the matters. I can hope that it they are all appreciated without saying so. I like to keep it simple, personal and straight forward. I truely hope this does not turn this great site into DA or myspace. I think you see what I am getting at. PLEASE LET ME KNOW WHAT YOU THINK!!!! / Nick

Questions by Jo O’Brien / ^Answers by Cathie Tranent...

Questions by Jo O’Brien / Answers by Cathie Tranent How does being a creative person and pursuing your creativity affect other aspects of your life? As a part time wage slave and full time wife and mother, I find the pursuit of my “artistic” side gives me some “Cathie” time, that I might not necessarily have taken otherwise. I have always been an “average” person, average grades, sporting non performer, and to find something that people tell me I’m good at is a real boost to self!! I am being very careful to make sure that the thronging masses are cared for, fed, watered and wearing clean clothes, but I can assure you that my housework standards have slipped a little since the advent of my RB addiction. Tell us about one person or moment that has made your time on redbubble particularly special or meaningful Only one? There have been so many amazing moments … my first sale to someone I didn’t know, the inspiration and fun I have shared with so many people, meeting on-line friends in person for the very first time … making new friends almost every day. Show & tell us about five works on redbubble that have moved or inspired you The first one would have to be Danny’s Binalong Avenue. I think it touches a chord in all our memories, of Christmases past, and family scattered. Absolutely anything from Incognita. Again – a little bit of Cog in all of us I think. TBO’s Geishas. All of them – traditionally beautiful, yet somehow modern and empowered. I can’t split the next two – so they’ll just have to be 4a and 4b. / No Frills Art and Ruby Red have shown me that having a social conscience and making people aware of the big issues doesn’t have to mean standing on a street corner with a sign. The Pen is Mightier than the Sword 3 / Rhinobra I’m also amazed at the rate at which this pair upload quality thought provoking work. And last, but by no means least, the other most inspiring people on this site would have to be the people who started this amazing Redbubble thing, the Helvetica Cliche- . Not only for having the vision, but for employing the right people to help it grow, teethe and grow some more. (And besides that – they still find time to make art themselves!!) Keep an eye on Cathie’s Journal. She’ll be posting a survey like this too soon. I wonder who she’ll interview?

questions: Jo O’Brien / answers: Paul McClintock How does being a creative person and pursuing your creativity affect other aspects of your life? My creativity invariably gets in the way of all the other aspects of my life, causing all kinds of havoc. For instance, it’s 5.30pm now and I’m still at work – and what am I doing? I’m doing a survey. It also means that my creative work is always kind of rushed. But I guess that has evolved into being ‘my style’ – I’m not the kind of person to clean up all the messy lines. I’ll just draw right over the top of them. This works out, because I have a short attention span. Tell us about one person or moment that has made your time on redbubble particularly special or meaningful That’s a tough question. I guess the first time I saw my art in print (on a shirt), and I actually realised… wow, it works, how simple was that? But more than that is the back and forth with other members (some of whom have been nice enough to buy my stuff and show it off aswell) When people do that, it makes a single sale more important than the rest of them combined. It’s a real person wearing my shirt! I wish everyone did that… I wish it were a requirement, that if you buy something you have to show it off, which reminds me – I don’t do that enough either. Show & tell us about five works on redbubble that have moved or inspired you Man, just look at my favourites list! I can’t put any above the others. There are so many unspeakably awesome pieces in there. I’m just browsing it now… ok, fine. Here are 5 that pop out at me right now: self in pern, BATORU ROWAIARU!!, thick rims, awkward positions, and never cry Watch out for more of these interviews in Paul’s Journal shortly

  • Natalie Perkins talks paisley, and creativity
    by Paul McClintock

~questions: Paul McClintock (stolen from) Jo O’Brien...

questions: Paul McClintock (stolen from) Jo O’Brien / answers: Natalie Perkins How does being a creative person and pursuing your creativity affect other aspects of your life? Creativity, and in turn creation, are at the very core of my life: my daily activities, my work, my short and long term goals. My attitude towards life is use every possible opportunity as a platform for creating something, however I think that my definition of “creativity” differs to the popular definition. In the Red Bubble community, I’m sure there are more than a few of you who have experienced a someone using the phrase “OH! you’re so creative!” as praise. My problem with this, is that it mystifies the role of a creater (or artist) and it feels plain old redundant. My response to this kind of praise is usually “Well, of course I am. But tell me how you feel about what I have created. That’s what I’m really interested in!” In my mind, creativity is the process of being presented with a problem and then solving it. Artists are not the only creative people in the world, indeed I’ve met creative businessmen, lawyers, bankers and sportspeople. The kind of creativity I employ deals with questions of design: line, shape, colour, perspective, scale, proportion, space, etc! In my non-design life, I eventually relate all things back to visual-spatial elements. So if my husband, a fiscally minded man with a gift for understanding language, is explaining how to stick to our budget I will utilise colour coding and clear formatting to get the “gist” of it. Some people understandably get frustrated with my continual linking back to the elements of design, or the history of art, but I guess it’s just my way of understanding the world. I can’t really separate my need to create and other aspects of my life, because one informs and fulfils the other! Tell us about one person or moment that has made your time on redbubble particularly special or meaningful When I first got a bubblemail from someone who was a fan of my work (and from someone who I wasn’t related to, or friends with!) It’s pretty awesome to have people who like what you do be able to contact you and to talk with you. When I received this bubblemail I then realised – hey, those other artists that I admire on Red Bubble – I can talk to them too!! It’s this level of interaction that sets Red Bubble far apart from all the other artists’ communities that I have been a member of. I have made some lovely friendships on this site! Show & tell us about five works on redbubble that have moved or inspired you / Jezebel by Eveline Tarunadjaja / Floating Rabbit Kills Thousands by ghostpatrol / And the mother said by martinz / untitled by braidy / In Bloom by Shannon Crees So, what is it about paisley that rocks so hard? I like paisley as a symbol that can speak the story of many symbols. The paisley pattern is so named for the Scottish town of Paisley, which started manufacturing textiles featuring the emblem. Originally developed in Persia, it was styled on fig, palm, pine and cypress trees and known by many words: boteh, buta and carrey. Some people thought the symbol imbued the wearer with eternal life, and it decorated crowns and capes of royalty. Soldiers returning from war to Scotland in the 19th century brought home shawls and other items from India, and the pattern was so popular that I guess the textile manufacturers in Paisley decided to start making their own. I find it interesting that the symbol enjoyed great popularity from the 1500s, but the name it has today was given by a rather late manufacturer. It’s interesting how our relationships with things are influenced by the last most memorable thing that happened. Previous histories can be squashed and made very hard to find. Most people who look at my drawings are prompted to remember the 70s (if they were around to enjoy it!) and aren’t aware of the history that pre-dates even them! I also like paisley because there are so many variations on the theme. I think I could spend the next 10 years exploring them to the exclusion of most other representational forms. There’s a world in lines and shapes, and as I explore that world I find more time to reflect and meditate on the other things in my real life. My own personal battle with paisley is a sort of rebellion against the ongoing injury I suffer in my wrist and shoulder from working as a graphic designer. I am drawn to it, and drawn into it, in spite of the pain. Thanks Natalie! Especially for the insight into paisley! / Remember Natalie is now obliged to share the love and interview two more bubblers, so watch her journal intently.

  • Lucky Vegetable talks cooking, and creativity
    by Paul McClintock

Questions: Paul / ~Answers: The Vegetable known as Lucky...

Questions: Paul / Answers: The Vegetable known as Lucky How does being a creative person and pursuing your creativity affect other aspects of your life? Well, it means always being the weirdest at any social gathering, although it does say something of my choice of friends that this isn’t by much. (That’s a compliment, everyone, I love you!) Also, because I’m a bit of a ‘thing’ and dip my grubby artistic mitts into everything, it means that I never settle long enough to distract me from the pursuit of chocolate and picture books. And I’ll never be able to describe my work as representing ‘man’s inhumanity to man’. Cause you can’t say that with a straight face, when you’ve just drawn a marshmallow with eyes and a star on his bum. Tell us about one person or moment that has made your time on redbubble particularly special or meaningful. That’s embarassing! I feel like I should be pulling out a tear-jerker of an anecdote now. Good job I’ve seen more than one episode of Oprah… Um..simply put, I have found people through the Bubble that give me hugs, food, and care if I have a crappy day or not. I think that’s pretty cool. And even more people who I want to meet and hang out with because of their work, their sense of humour, their character. In that way, it’s a little like a school, only no-one’s chucking their lunch at me and calling me a nerd. So, that’s a bit of a bonus. There are of course lots of ‘moments’, but they come out most clearly in my work. Everything I do, is about someone, for someone, inspired by someone, or an experience with someone. Without those times, I’d be drawing the most boring of stick figures, and writing complete twaddle. Although the word ‘twaddle’ might actually look ok on a tshirt… By the way, when you’re done reading this, check out Paul’s elephant pictures. I bought one. They’re great =) In your writing, is there any single recurring theme or subtext that you find yourself coming back to, over and over again? Or is each piece of writing distinct in it’s underlying imagery? Hahah, ok this is a hard one. I guess the only thing I can say is that whatever I write comes about the same way as any of my creations. I would liken my head to a pot with lots of stuff bubbling in it, and when something’s cooked, it floats to the top, I fish it out, and slap it on the table for people to look at. Seriously, that’s the best analogy I can come up with. So you could also think of my head as an oven. Or maybe a wok. Something kitcheny and to do with food preparation, anyway. Thanks Troy! I’m getting a craving for slow cooked brain. / Remember, the Vegetable of Luck is now obliged to share the love and interview two more bubblers, so watch her journal with patient awe.

I was contacted this week by the owner of a local Gallery who, after a brief discussion regarding my work, I had invited to view some of the works I currently have on exhibit at the local Library. They would like to purchase my book, my cards and my calendars to sell in the Gallery (I guess they’ll be like the lollies at the checkout in the supermarket, you know, the smaller, cheaper type purchases, the impulse buys!) and have commissioned me to create some cards for the Gallery too….................... I’m a tad EXCITED!!! You’ve got to get out there and talk to people.

I’m really pleased that so many of you have been able to use the info I posted in my previous journal. I’ve also added it to the All Seascapes Group forum where we are hoping to get more info from the photographers who have something to share. Thanks for the suggestion, johno Would be wonderful, if you’re a member, to add your own insight, suggestions, or links to that list. If you’ve been able to produce a better shot because of this help, post that too, and give us all some feedback on whether you’re doing better. If you’re not a member, why not join and have your say. UPCOMING: Adelaide Photographers MeetUp About five weeks ago half-a-dozen Adelaide photographers converged on the Adelaide Zoo for a day of networking, social chitchat and LOTs of photography. This time I’m organising a “City-Walk” where we walk, talk and shoot architecture and objects. Here is the area of the city I’d be interesting in walking.. Yes, this is a large area! I happily walk around ALL day, photographing people, architecture and oddities. DID YOU COME TO SEE THE LIST OF ATTENDEES? You can view it here . Moved for easy-viewing. EDIT: 11:29 PM 17/05/2009 Big thanks to everyone who has responded and is interested: The date has been decided: 31st May Here is the plan for the day: Between 11.00am-12.00noon – Meet at Rotunda on Elder Park. / We all know it, surely. Early arrivals can scope out a good place to watch everyone arriving and get their portrait shots! (I’ll be there at 11.00am!) 12noon – 12.45pm / Walk up KW Road to North Terrace, turning right at Parliament House down toward the Casino/Train Station. Quick visit into the atrium to photograph. It is permitted, I’ve done this on Flickr-group meetups. Continue down North Terrace to the Morphett Road Bridge. 12.45pm – 4.00pm / OPTION 1: / We turn right, crossing the bridge, walking all the way to War Memorial Drive. Those that wish to can take the stairs (just beyond the river that takes you) down to the Torrens … and we all meetup just in front of the Tennis Stadium (or thereabouts). We walk and photograph the length of War Memorial Drive, back across the bridge at KW Road, back to the Rotunda. We then walk up KW Street. From here, read from where option #2 is underlined. OPTION 2. / Just before the bridge, we cross over to photograph the historic Church. (You’ll know it when you get there!) We then walk up Morphet Street, turn LEFT into Hindley Street and we walk and photograph interesting sites along the way. There are few interesting locations behind buildings, (particularly those toy-cars stuck to the wall in Rosina Street) that we can detour to see. When we reach KW Street, we cross over to Rundle Mall to go shoot the Brass Pigs and the Silver Balls! At Pultney Street, we turn left; At North Terrace, we turn left (Some may choose to cross the road). / Photographing historic limestone architecture along the way, we head back to the KW Road intersection, taking the pedestrian lights over to Government House. Here I can show you some interesting facts that I discovered a few years back that is not-overly-publicised! / We then cross the road to Parliament House, and walk back to the Rotunda Wait, wait, you want food and drinks: At some point in Hindley Street or Rundle Mall we find a nice coffee shop! Considering all the chatting and stopping that normally occurs with these events, this will surely fill the afternoon. If anyone knows of any events happening in the CBD that are happening the same weekend, tell us about it now so we can jostle it into the timeline. EXTRA (courtesy of Michael Tapping) / Government House and Grounds are open to the Public on Sunday 31st May between 10.00 AM and 4.00PM / We’ll go there from the Rotunda before moving into the CBD. This may take some time! Tag word for event is asacitywalkmay2009

Well July is my “2nd year birthday” here on the bubble, wow has time flied or what?? Having the honor of meeting some great people all around the world and here locally too. Having lost a friend or two along the way (but then could you really call em a friend if you lost em? ) :D The main reason tho for this journal is once again, Im out shooting in the mountains and start chatting with another photog. / Of course I have to turn them on to their new addiction..i mean Redbubble “coughs” and they have taken my advice and joined up :) So folks who have really held true to me thru the past couple of years, I would like to introduce another talented photographer that lives here in my area. Deb Campbell / After chatting with her watching a bear attempt to take a nap in a tree (she managed to get a nice shot of it, she had the right lens) I had told her about our great community here and some of the perks that go along with it. / She has a few images up (for now), so browse on over and check them out when you get the time. I know once she gets back from the weekend festivities I will be eager to see more of her portfolio / So give that warm welcome you all are very famous for :) And thanks again to everyone of you who have kept me on your watchlists, who have viewed and commented on my work. To those who didnt disown me because I made a simple suggestion to help improve your work. You all are held very true to my heart, and I wish one day, we’d all could get the chance to meet up and just hang out. You all Rock!

12 years it has taken me to release this short story to the eyes of the public. I have had this short story sitting in private viewing for the past three weeks waiting for the courage to put this one out there. Ushna and her fabulous group has given my humble short story voice and recognition. This is one of my most valued features. / Thank you. Voice has been in my life a central theme. When I was at University studying Masters in Adult Education, I studied Voice and its implications in Women Studies and Autobiography and Life Long Learning. I was interested in giving voice to women in my first Autobiography Two Voices Two Women, a dialogue between my mother and I. And in my second autobiography, My life of love, loss and learning a voice to my love of all the important men in my life from father to teacher to lover to mentor to muse. With Men Talk I wanted to do something quite different and write a short story not only through the voice and eyes of one man but two men. And I wanted to write through their voice about their women. This was an exciting challenge and I have always held this little story close to me and now after all these years have brought it out to the public. I have read much and studied the men’s movement and men’s perspective as much as I have studied women’s movements and perspectives. So I just want to thank my friends on RedBubble and Ushna for allowing me this wonderful platform to bring forward not only my poems that I am writing now but for also allowing me to share those pieces of my writing history that no one has ever seen before. With Love, Anthea

G’day folks. Years ago, I would never have envisaged writing about depression from first-hand experience. Well, I am and I hope by doing so it may prompt others to action. Last year it was suggested to me by a couple of family members that I see my General Practitioner. It’s good that those close to me could see a change in my health and make that suggestion. Being a bloke who thinks that everything will sort itself out, in this instance it hasn’t. Recently, I made a move and made an appointment with my GP. My situation is still being assessed, however I’m very much looking forward to a healthier me. I’ve had eight sessions with a psychologist to date and things are going okay. Thankfully, I still have enough marbles floating around inside my cranium to realise that there’s got to be some changes enacted by me to become healthier. Anyway, enough of me. I’m happy to talk about depression with anyone here, whether it be publicly on this journal or privately via bubblemail. My motivation is to raise awareness and provide information to those who feel they may need advice. A few things I’d like to mention which may assist: Australia’s national depression initiative, beyondblue, is an organisation which provides information about depression to consumers, carers and health professionals. A beaut port of call for those thinking of taking that first step for assistance. / www.beyondblue.org.au There’s an excellent book authored by Dr Sarah Edelman titled: Change your thinking which deals with positive and practical ways to overcome stress, negative emotions and self defeating behaviour. Available for purchase online at Borders. Highly recommended. / www.borders.com.au It’s Movember. This is where we can all raise awareness about men’s health issues, encourage one another, and help those organisations which can do with support. I’m taking part in the Movember initiative this year, and for the first time in my life I’ll be growing a moustache. As someone who knows first-hand what depression is like, I feel that using my clean shaven face and knowledge can help and inspire others. If you’d like to support me during Movember, click on my Movember link or graphic to donate or leave a comment. Thanks for reading folks. And fellas, go for it. Good luck. My niece Alanna and I had one of the best conversations last night. She is wise and beautiful beyond what I experienced as a woman about to turn 21. I have seen her understand and employ principles of life that for me are only right now just coming into view almost naturally as if she was indeed born a woman knowing ‘Who She Really Is’. / This thrills me and for whatever reason last night the Universe deemed fit, we exchanged stories on the parts of our lives that gave us both the most contrast with our parents. I did not know how similar her life was to mine in ways that she did not suffer the ‘kind’ of abuse I did, never the less me with my father and she with her mother we found we shared some most ‘unfit’ moments and then we both shared the view that all of this has indeed lead up to who we are right NOW. / ALANNA IN HER POWERFUL NOW / / And then?.. we got down to business, we got down to talking about manifesting our dreams and where we are now. She was writing a paper on ‘feminism’ for a theory class and felt that she did not buy into ‘what is’ rather she like to create her world as she went. I was in awe She so so gets it. She understands it is interesting to see how we get to THIS POWERFUL NOW.. but that she would rather not call herself anything that attaches itself to a victim or separation roll, that she is Alanna and that life is good now…. Holy fargen Cow. In a year and a half when she graduates from Cornish, a Dramatic Arts University, she and I will be moving to L.A. Calif to pursue her acting carreer and me now that I have my business geared toward yacht clubs there are so many in So Calif. we both will be part of our expanding lives and to think I will be around my ‘girl’ really feels wonderful. That is the plan. We talked abut manifesting abundance and choosing to feel the abundance we already possess. It was while we were talking about abundance and visualizing our dreams that we began to laugh and feel really good. She and I laugh quite a bit. Well just then I saw a bubble mail come in and it was from someone I did not know who said… Cool Work .... Then I saw a post to me that said I sold a large framed print... I have never sold a large framed print, but the beauty of this story is the large framed print is of my Niece and the work I created of her called Fervent of course I squealed and shared what had just happened with her. This piece is one of my most view works and she and I could feel the magic that had just happened. What an incredible shared moment of understanding the principles of that which we were both feeling at the time. Only the Universe and our Joy could line up a moment like that!! A chance that one was talking to the very person whos art was sold about a subject called abundance felt pretty incredible indeed… More and more I am feeling and seeing the ‘theory’ I have embraced called The Law Of Attraction becoming the norm. I keep close to me the motto that ‘nothing is more important, than that I feel good’ and so does Alanna. She calls for counsel sometimes only to be reminded of that which she already understands and feels. I am lucky beyond my most wild dreams. I like that life continues to open up to me as I keep exploring all the unlimited possibilities available when I choose to keep my vibration raised to a level that brings home to me all my desires which the Universe works out on an incredible unlimited scale how to deliver to me. That is so not my job. My job is to Ask and step two, the ‘how to’ is all the business of Source/Universe/God. Step Three is expecting my ‘stuff’ to arrive and find a way always to feel good. / I am no longer am at the stage of coming to believe, I do believe in this Law. It makes sense to me and feels empowering more and more that people places and things have no bearing on my Joy unless i make it so. / . / Much Love and a few happy dances to boot. I do not know who bought this piece but I wlll say THANK YOU FOR BEING A PART OF ALANNA’S AND ME’S DOWN HOME VIBE!! AND A tee hee heee! Amazing writer and friend, Jim Marshal bought my works Abstraction Yearly THANK YOU SO VERY MUCH JIM!!!! Linaji and Alanna
