  • Escape...
    by Basia McAuley

Here is the image following ‘Red Ribbon’. My little girl worked out how to open the heavy back gate and thought she could escape into the big park at the back of our new house. I decided to add this image to satisfy the curiosity of everyone who wanted to know what she saw through the hole in the gate!

I’ve always loved fairytales and I think this image I’ve created has a story in there waiting to be told. With this image I’ve taken a different direction compared to my impressionistic portraits which was really quite a surprise and very enjoyable to create a fantasy image. A child of the sea, without a soul and forever a child/fish. I am curious about the ocean, about the human connection with the sea through evolution. All these dreams, myths and faerytales hint at something much more deeper. / When I swim in the ocean there is a hypnotic silence that complements the raw, wild power of the wind and water. / Although my heart beats rapidly I feel the silence and it’s familiar calming. Despite a gentle yet insistent reminder from my lungs that I need to breathe air, I feel the pull of the ocean. *I’m experimenting with backgrounds, I’m starting to feel I should move forward with my pencil drawings, imbue some emotion with colour/fabric/textute etc. Any sugguestions would be welcome.

  • Watercolor and pencil, original available. / This image is about entering the Faerie dimension and on another level, the soul’s journey. Soul knows no time, and thus, as in the realms of fairie, night and day occur simultaneously. The soul seeks unification with all that is, desiring above all else to return to the Source. I envision it as feminine nnd forever seeking blissful reunion with the Beloved and here, have personified Soul in the countenance of a young woman. Her neck is elongated, for bodily distortion is associated with shamanic journeying into other realms, humans in the fairie dimension, and a symptom of visions attained after consuming Amanita mushrooms in shamanic ritual. Above Soul’s head, as if guiding and protecting, two wrens (messengers of the goddess Rhiannon) display the triple spiral within a flaming sun disk. The spirit of the land appears as golden goddess within an unfurling blossom. Amanita mushrooms and a living tapestry of centuries -old mycelium, weaves the woman, web like, into to her surroundings. The mycelium, a metaphor for ancient wisdom teachings, interlaces fantastic totem animals with herbs, celestial symbols, and the cosmic egg of creation. Honeybees, metaphors of wisdom, and ladybugs, my personal symbol for guardians, flit across the image. The interweaving of these elements symbolizes the living, timeless organism that is earth. The animals in this painting are connected with the Goddess and some, like the salamander, have alchemical associations. The bee is a Druidic totem connected with wisdom. The Ladybug one of my personal totems for good fortune and blessings. I placed my Ladybug here as a wish for good fortune to whomever looks into this painting. The Cosmic Egg hangs at her throat chakra, wihtin it is the void. The leaves are those of the world tree, in which new souls roost waiting to be born into this earthly dimension (A widespread shamanic belief). About the Symbolism: The combined elements are symbolic of Wholeness, unification with all that is. Reverence for the land and all upon it is the first step in an evolving consciousness. Spending time in natural surroundings, and with animals and plants reconnects us to what is Real. An inverted interpretation might be: When we wander off the path chasing will ‘o the wisps, the forest is dark, threatening place. Shadow and thick foliage hide unseen threats, and the wide path gradually narrows to a winding deer trail until suddenly there’s nothing left to follow. We are lost. This is the time for stripping life to basics, keeping only what’s needed for survival. If feeling indecisive, unsettled, restless or frustrated, set down the unnecessary baggage. Look closely at friendships and allow the superfluous and damaging ones to lapse, or sever them completely. Keeping life clean and simple is a good way to start finding the way back. Look to the in – dwelling goddess, trust Soul’s nature. Look for the sun, and move toward the Light.

    by Karin Taylor

    US$5.23–US$119.32

/ (Mocha timber frame/off white matt/medium size) / Greeting Card hand drawn on paper / digital painting Legend of Little Geisha / art and story by K Taylor (4/09) In the village of Ishekawa by the Sea of Japan lived a poor couple who wove and carved for a living. The couple had no real possessions but were content with the beauty of the mountains and the sea surrounding them, and happy to be together. The only thing they wished for and did not yet have, was a child to call their own. One day, an ancient crone visited their home and as always, the couple offered their hospitality, gave her rice cakes and sake to warm her belly. The old crone, in return for their kindness, bestowed upon the couple the ability to have a girl child. The child grew from a seed into a strong and beautiful young woman, glowing with pride and joy, she was the delight of Ishekawa by the Sea of Japan, and many young suitors came to visit and pay her homage. But as is the way with old crones, you can never quite trust them to do you a favour without some twist in the tale. Unfortunately, the seed from which the child grew, began to sprout roots, and she was bound to the earth. In time the beautiful young girl became a majestic tree and all the birds from near and far came to perch and nest in her branches, she gave them shelter from the wind and rain, and everyone who knew the legend realised the tree was actually the Little Geisha. / here’s the drawing (above) prior to being digitally coloured
