Bullshit! And this is why. I realised whilst reading other peoples comments that some people have been dissuaded from taking photos around interesting industrial locations. After all you must be a terrorist if you are taking a photo of a refinery, right! Thought I’d share some of my experiences on the subject as I am very often in these kinds of situations. My day job is photographing cars for magazines. I often do this in industrial locations and sometimes near sensitive installations such as refineries, ports, airports, you name it. I’ve been accosted by security guards, customs agents, police, ignorant old farts, you name it. I’m sure someone has already reported me to ASIO. I’m not a lawyer so don’t try to use me as an excuse if you end up in jail, do your own legal research, consult a lawyer if you think you need to, but this is the information I have obtained from both State and Federal Police when I’ve called to question the legality of such photography. Basically, there are no laws which prevent you photographing any property from a public place! Private properties such as shopping centres, subways, airports etc are a completely different story whilst within the property. The property owner sets the rules and you must abide or leave. But if you are outside the private property and on public land then shoot away. There can be local council By-Laws preventing photography, such as on some beaches, so it is worth asking the question if you think it might be relevant. However, any Police officer can do just about anything they like to you should they have good reason to suspect you of Terrorist activity. They can confiscate your camera, detain and question you. My solution to this is to have some forms of identification or samples of my work, in a small compact Folio, which can be shown to quickly convince them of my real intentions and identity. I have a Canon CPS card with my photo on it and business cards, or you could join one of the professional photographic associations (if you are eligible) some of which now offer membership cards for this very reason. There’s heaps of good information here on the legality of photography. It’s worth reading. / http://www.4020.net/words/photorights.php Having said that, you can’t then just do anything you like with the images because of trade mark and copyright issues with buildings and company logos, but that’s a whole different issue anyway. Just being allowed to take the photo doesn’t mean you can do whatever you like with it. My suggestion is that if you are going to be shooting in really questionable places AND you think you might have trouble with security, then try to contact the security people first and tell them who you are and what you are doing. DO NOT ASK FOR THEIR PERMISSION, you don’t need it! Just offer them the courtesy of letting them know who you are and what you are doing so that they don’t have to worry about you. Shell, for example, is a bit touchy about this kind of thing. I always call them and tell them of my intentions to shoot around their refineries. They appreciate it and we both play nicely. Same thing at airports such as Moorabin or Essendon. It works. Know your rights and don’t let the ignorant push you around. Of course never let things get out of hand. I can honestly say that I would be the first to call the police should a security guard get heavy handed with me. Not that it’s ever happened, and hopefully it never will. JJ

I wanted to share a funny experience I had with my Brother-In-law back in 2005. / I also consider him one of my best friends. We always have fun whatever we do. Vincent Vartorella – who just joined redbubble a while back is my brother-in-law in case you don’t know. When we go places we love to take our cameras. It doesn’t matter where we go or what we are doing. I guess you could say we share the same interest in photography and enjoy it. / We screw around all time and we are always sneaking pictures of each other and having fun when the other isn’t looking. We probably have more pictures of each other than you could imagine and we just laugh. We went on a all day golf trip and I took my Sony Cybershot small camera with us, it was new at the time. / We used the heck out of that camera shooting every shot you could imagine. / It was a blast. We were heading to the 17th green and I said “Hey I have an idea, why don’t you go up on the green and I will hit a shot towards the green and we can see what it looks like on video. We never used the camera for video. So we wanted to see how the quality was. I dropped a ball about 100 yards from the green and he went and stood directly by the flag. / Of course he had to add his commentary to the shot which made this hilarious. Go Here / To see what happened. To this day we still laugh and can not believe this happened. / What are the odds? So one day I posted it on You Tube for fun. The funny part is its kind of popular I have a ton of hits on it.

RedBubble – Taking it to the next level? Why are we here? a) A platform in which to exhibit our artwork / b) A place to admire and be inspired by the work of others. / c) Ultimately we would all like to sell our work. I am very pleased to note that lately the Bubble is also becoming a social network. I wait for the comments from such as Meach ready to fall off my chair with laughter. But unlike Facebook (“See you down the pub at 9pm M8T”) the Bubble has PURPOSE!! / And the purpose is for the production of BEST WORK. There are those out there who love art and buy it for that reason. But there must be billions out there who think art is something you have to take out a second mortgage in order to purchase. And yet here we are offering for sale reasonably priced original and brilliant artwork. Red Bubble and in my own modest way are promoting the works. You recall I made the suggestion a while back that my fellow moderators should do some promotion work specific to their own groups. I was a bit sad to note that quite a few rejected my journal suggestion to their group. Hope they took it on board anyway. There has been a lot of hot air expelled recently about reply buttons, taking offence and unpleasant criticisms. In a way this is good because it brings peeps out of the woodwork to discuss. Which brings me to my point (at last!)…… It seems to me that in order to sell to the masses we really do need follow the overiding purpose of the Bubble and display only BEST WORK. / To this end I would like to make the following suggestion regarding the use comments box. Superb, wonderful and stunning are fine where appropriate but let’s take it a stage further; help others to achieve the Best Artwork. Perhaps an example would be – some months ago I spotted a seascape where the horizon was sloping downhill. I bravely asked if this was ‘meant’ and if not using my limited experience of photoshop I explained how to level it up. A few days ago I spotted another thing that could improve an artwork but wasn’t brave enough to place it in comments and sent a bubblemail instead. I was relieved to note that both comments were gratefully received Occasionally there is a dull photo that is good as a concept but would benefit 100% just with the addition of a drop of ‘contrast’. Two things then. BE BRAVE and use the comment box to help that person (and others) to technically to improve their artwork. And two – all of us should write the following on a post-it and stick it on our monitors, “I will not take offence if someone suggests an improvement to my work”. I am not suggesting that one should suggest conceptual improvements but comments like ‘why not re-shoot from a different angle’ or ‘crop it so the object is filling the frame much more’, are acceptable. In other words stick to technical comments. / Peeps offering comments like “That picture is cr*p” should be banned from the site I reckon. Let’s all of us get super-interactive. Use the comment box to boost the standard of our artwork so as the masses start to log-on big time they are presented with Best Work. / Over all remember the words next to the comments button – PLESE PLAY NICE. As a final thought to moderators – I will be seeking ways of splitting the Watersports and Activities group artwork into sub-groups i.e. Sailing, rowing, surfing, underwater, etc etc so that when a punter or advertising agency comes on line it will narrow their search. If anyone can help me with that I won’t be offended – honest. LOL LOVE & PEACE / & “ALRIGHT THEN MY BIRDS, MY HANSOMES!!!!! ‘avin a good day do ‘ee”. P.S. That’s A Proper Cornish greeting hence no question mark at the end of the greets. The second one responds with “yes” or “Alright Boy” or “maid”. Honestly, how can anyone take offence at being called ‘Hun’ – We are in a global Village now. Everyone has a different up-bringing / social education / way of being. I always knew that the RedBubble team had a big job on their hands. But recently, various piles around the office have been tipping me off as to just how big a job it is… / This is the board where I pin up all the cool ideas people add to the Feedback and Suggestions Forum and then refer to for ongoing nagging to get what we all want :) / ...and the ones that didn’t fit on the board! / Then Pete tells me that 2585 sales notifications went out in March and Group Activity is growing and growing / Just cleaning up Ed’s desk could be a 5 person job / We’re always trying out new products which results in the Bub Hub being taken over with samples ready to be played with and debated over. / And Peter has a more emails than I can count to deal with – 4294965818 to be precise. That explains why he never gets back to me. Sometimes finding the time to get through all the great ideas can be overwhelming, but it’s worth it. And it’s so satisfying to see artists and writers sharing their creativity. The staff may not be able to make magic happen overnight, but it’s inspiring to work with a bunch of people who are so focussed on helping artists connect with one another and sell their work. Jo

So I’ve often described RedBubble as a trusted partner ‘we take care of all the boring back of house work so that creative people can get on with being creative’. After all who wants to deal with payment gateways, fraud, refunds, accounting, delivery, packaging, production problems, accounting, changing exchange rates, quality control, accounting, tax, governments, inappropriate behaviour, spammers, help, intellectual property, inventory, search engine marketing, website development, hosting and new printing technology. I like the idea that when I turn the tap water comes out. And some days I long for that experience with RedBubble … oh for a day where I don’t have to think about accounting! Anyway … most of the stuff that we do is deadly boring (and we try to shelter the community from it) ... but if you ever want to delve into the inner workings of RedBubble I’ve decided to try an experiment with a new user Backstage at RB. So if you ever want to know what we’re working on … and why we’re not building your favourite feature this week, check out this profile. Each week I’ll try to post on what we’re doing and why. -Peter P.S. Here’s what it’s like driving the bus for RedBubble: Joy Ride by Jake Easley

We’re testing a simple four-question quiz that’s quick and quite fun. Consider this a “beta” or trial run that’s good enough to share. What is the Quiz? You’ll see 16 artworks – 12 from artists on RedBubble and four Picasso artworks. Challenge yourself to correctly identify the four Picasso works. Then pass along the Quiz to friends, family and others that enjoy art or puzzles. Let’s show the world that the artwork on RedBubble is indistinguishable from some of the well-known masterworks. Plus, the quiz is a simple way to introduce people to your artwork and RedBubble.com. Click here for the Quiz! If you have an idea for the next quiz – a theme or artist or another suggestion – note your thoughts in this forum. We appreciate the feedback. If the Quiz format is popular, we’ll make more of them. - the RedBubble team

This is for those of you who are overseas and away from Australia. / I have just been inspired to write this after having a comment left by Owlspook. / Please note that this is factual and is happening now. / . / Take some time out to think about the animals. / . / I cannot begin to tell you how much has been going on over here. / Here is just one example that was on TV last night…… / As the police were checking burnt out properties, they came across a ginger tabby cat. / Its face was burned away; one of its eyeballs had exploded in the heat, and its fur and feet / were burned away as well. / But they took it to the Vet, hoping that something could be done. / The surgeon’s took a photo of it and posted it on the notice board in the blackened town, as they had been doing with all the domestic animals. / The owners had been looking through the burned out countryside for a week for there beautiful cat. / They went and checked to see if it was at the veterinary clinic. / And yes it was. The only thing that was to make the cat recognisable was the fact that it was still wearing its green collar with its bell. / The cat is now returning from the dead with love and devotion. / But what about the thousands of Kangaroos, still wandering the countryside with no face or no legs that are left unattended to starve in the black ash. / Or the Wombats, that are now nothing but walking charcoal. / The list and stories go on and on. / The little glider’s that have no trees. / The Koala’s with no feet and claws, let alone water and gum leaves to survive on. / Then there are the horses and goats and sheep and dogs and…and…and…and… / We need to let us humans get on with rebuilding our lives and towns with the help of donations and assistance from the gov’t, and think more about the animals that don’t have anything other that us….. / So please give something to the Animal Funds in the hope that all of our wonderful rare Australian Wildlife will not become extinct. / North Eastern Victoria is gone. / North Western Victoria is partially gone. / Wilsons Promontory is gone. / Towns like Kinglake, Marysville and others are gone. / And there are dead and dying animals everywhere…. / wildlifeappeal@hotmail.com

Ok, I thought I’d give back what I’ve learned since so many people on the Internet have helped me out! If you already know this and I’m the only one who just figured it out recently, then I’ll slap myself silly and call it a day LOL. Today, I’d like to show you how to get the most in terms of pixels on your subject, without cropping or enlarging the actual subject. We all know that when you crop an image, you lose pixels, when you enlarge, you may get blur depending on the software you use. I use Photoshop CS and CS4 (recently got). Let’s take this picture as an example. / It’s a nice tight shot taken vertically with some white space all around her. I have learned to frame my subjects like this and ensure I have space all around, because later I can have more options to work with. Now with that image, all you can pretty much do is print vertically, which is ok. Now let’s say you wanted to achieve the same shot but framer her to the right, like 1/3 of the picture for an interesting composition. With you camera, you would turn it sideways and have to “zoom out” to fit her in the right or left side and have all that white space on either side. Now, it will be a great image, except now your subject has gotten much smaller in terms of the overall portrait. Get it? You got that shot, but you had to lose out on the size of the subject. So if you cropped or enlarged, you would lose out a bit on pixels and maximum enlargement size. Well I just learned that the crop tool, ain’t just for cropping in photoshop, well at least just not for cropping “down”. What I’m about to show you will work mostly on solid white or black backdrops, with very little effort, since colors will match perfectly. You can do it with other shades of white, but you will have some cloning, dodging or burning to do. I opened Kaylie’s picture, the one I took vertically against a solid white backdrop that was overexposed. In photoshop, I took the crop tool and dragged it over the entire photo. Then instead of dragging one side in to crop it smaller, i dragged it “out”, making my canvas larger! Before doing this, i made sure my swatch color was white. After I expanded the crop to one side, I hit enter. This made the canvas size larger and filled it in with the white color from my swatch! Really in like less than 2 minutes! Now you see the same image with Kaylie on the right and all this white space on the left, looking as if I shot it this way. But, you will notice now that it is landscape and Kaylie’s body size remains the same, so we have not lost any pixels on her. ! So now we have an image that works either in portrait or landscape printing! You can also do this in case you wanted a subject centered, etc. You can also do this by increasing canvas size, etc, but this is quick and super easy! This works great if you shoot musicians or anything that later may require that extra white space for words for a poster or CD cover, etc. Final image: / Please note that this image wasn’t completely white, so I did some cloning in the final image. But you will get the point I’m trying to make in this tutorial. Let me know if you have any questions! Enjoy! xoxo / Jen

After a long journey from Canada to south Florida, Rogue and Rascal finally arrived!! Woot!! I thought until havoc was rained upon me and my, once cozy, home. Day 1 There were screams and wails about being hungry, so I decided a bit of fresh fruit might get them off to a good start. I turned my back to cut the fruit, never turn your back on them, and then I heard a blood chilling scream. R&R couldn’t wait and spied one of my Red Savina hot peppers (once rated as the world’s hottest pepper) and well there were lots of tears and screams about fire and water!! / Well all the screaming and crying brought the dogs around. They wanted to know what all the racket was going on. R&R fell in love with Bruiser, I think they thought he was a devil, too! / Kodie just didn’t know what to think and is now seeing a therapist!! / Checking the place out after a bite to eat and terrorizing the dogs, R&R came across a koala, an animal they recognized from home and a few others they didn’t know. Lucky for them, the others had the right stuff(ing) and made some new friends. / Rogue & Rascal appreciated my sign, then proceeded to show me how wild they are! / / / / Learning a new game. I tried to warn them about the white ball and not to sit on the others! / Day 2 I really think they had fun as they only brought me to tears a couple of times!! First we had to fill up the tank….I felt so bad for the poor guy that got drenched in gas, but I did manage to get the matches away from them before real disaster struck. / Watching the road ahead for speed traps! And then of course the next thing I know is that I’m sitting in passenger seat and they are driving! I’m stilling trying to figure out how they did it!! / / Looking at the lighthouse finally calmed them down a bit….until they saw the cannons! / / / And finally the end of a beautiful and exhausting day! / / / Look for more antics soon…..Rogue and Rascal’s next stop….GeorgieGirl in Australia!!! Haven’t heard about the fun & excitement of hosting the Redbubble Devils for a few days? Join the Redbubble Devils group and add your name to The List. But be careful…they can be trouble!!!

Another email I just had to share :D I took my dad to the mall the other day to buy some new shoes (he is84). / We decided to grab a bite to eat at the food court. / I noticed he was watching a teenager sitting next to him. / The teenager had spiked hair in all different colours: green, red, orange and blue. / My dad kept staring at him. / The teenager would look and find him staring every time. When the teenager had enough, he sarcastically asked: ‘What’s the matter old man, never done anything wild in your life?’ Knowing my Dad, I quickly swallowed my food so that I would not choke on his response; knowing he would have a good one. / And in classic style he did not bat an eyelid in his response: ‘Got stoned once and fucked a peacock. I was just wondering if you were my son.’

Take note of and remember the following photo quotes. It’s always worthwhile to learn from masters. “The wisdom of the wise and the experience of the ages are perpetuated in quotations”. – Benjamin Disraeli 1.“ You don’t take a photograph, you make it. – Ansel Adams Full awareness of what makes a good photo is essential in taking great photographs. Why would anyone be interested in this photo and what elements can be included or excluded to make it truly great? 2.“ Your first 10,000 photographs are your worst. – Henri Cartier-Bresson Do you know how many photos you have taken up until now? You will have to take thousands of pictures to reach a point where you can begin to evaluate them objectively. Looking upon your photos as if you were looking at them through someone else’s eyes is a good way to give yourself constructive criticism. Comparing your first photos with your most recent, do you see improvement? Do you remember how you loved some of your first photos – do you still love them or are they now not so good anymore? 3. “ Beauty can be seen in all things, seeing and composing the beauty is what separates the snapshot from the photograph. – Matt Hardy You often don’t or can’t see beauty in the world until someone shows it to you. Take a look around you just now – even without moving from the computer. Can you see something in a new way, a different way of presenting something common? Just take a look again… 4. “ Nothing happens when you sit at home. I always make it a point to carry a camera with me at all times…I just shoot at what interests me at that moment. – Elliott Erwitt When the world is your canvas, so to speak, you need your tools with you to capture everything around you. Make a habit of always carrying a camera with you—you will never suffer the regret of wishing you had. 5. “ Which of my photographs is my favorite? The one I’m going to take tomorrow. – Imogen Cunningham Never be fully satisfied with what you’ve done. Never stop photographing. It is very likely that your best photograph has not yet been captured. 6. “ You’ve got to push yourself harder. You’ve got to start looking for pictures nobody else could take. You’ve got to take the tools you have and probe deeper. – William Albert Allard We are always looking for reasons for not taking good pictures. Cartier-Bresson used film camera, same lens, no flash, same shutter speed – he didn’t need the newest digital equipment to take great photos. We all have access to some subjects that no one else has access to – look at your friends’ hobbies, the workplaces of friends and family, and any place you have access to find a vision that comes uniquely from your access. Many people would dream of having the same access you have, and you might not have considered how valuable your access is. 7. “ If I saw something in my viewfinder that looked familiar to me, I would do something to shake it up. – Garry Winogrand How often have you seen a photo that is missing something, thinking, “This is a good photo but I’d make it different somehow.”? Sometimes small things make a big difference. Don’t be afraid to shake things up. 8. “ I always thought good photos were like good jokes. If you have to explain it, it just isn’t that good. – Anonymous Sometimes it is interesting to hear the story behind the photo and you see the photo in a new light. But in most cases a photo shouldn’t need a story to back it up. It has to speak for itself. 9. “ Twelve significant photographs in any one year is a good crop. – Ansel Adams Even one of the masters in photography, Ansel Adams, didn’t expect to get more than 12 great photographs each year. How can anyone expect more? Take a look at your last year in photos – do you really see 12 photos that stand out from the rest? 10. “It can be a trap of the photographer to think that his or her best pictures were the ones that were hardest to get. – Timothy Allen – On editing photos Editing photos can often be the most difficult but also the most satisfying part. Sometimes taking a quick look at all the photos and then going away for a while before taking a closer look lends a fresh eye to your viewing. You may see things you did not notice previously. Stepping away from the mass of photos can make certain images stand out in your mind’s eye, leaving a memorable impression that can characterize a good photo. Taken from here

Share this with your social networks. / By Darren Stones When travelling, photography can be an integral part of your journey. Sure, we all enjoy savouring the sights, tastes and tourist hot spots, however travel photography provides opportunity to create and enjoy a memorable experience. Here’s 5 tips to assist you to take better travel photographs: No. 1 – Use the golden hour for better landscape scenes Serious landscape photographers utilise the golden hour to their advantage. Inspect the best landscape photographs, and you’ll notice that the sun is generally low in the sky. The first and last sunlit hour of the day produces a softer light for quality landscapes. Even though photographing during these times can be difficult due to a busy travel schedule, make the effort and you’ll be rewarded with better quality images. No. 2 – Photograph people Taking photos of people is a vital part of travel photography. People like to know about people and they like to know what they look like. So, take people photos and expand your portfolio. A city or town is about its people and culture – not just its buildings and scenery. Walk around with a smile, greet people as you pass them, and become part of the surroundings. If you see someone engaged in an activity, approach them in a friendly manner. Introduce yourself and tell them you’re a visitor to the region. Tell them you’re a travel photographer who likes to take photos of people. Ask if you can take their photograph as they’re engaged in an activity. Go in close with a wide-angle zoom to create a dynamic portrait. No. 3 – Stick around for sunset, and linger a little longer When travelling, most people don’t take photographs at sunset, preferring to dine and savour a region’s tastes. Take a look behind you when the sun is setting as it may be highlighting buildings or trees. Sometimes the best photographs are taken during sunset. Stay for the afterglow, because this can assist in producing unique architectural shots. With fading light, and street lights aglow, it’s an ideal time to photograph buildings. No. 4 – Image format Some subjects look better in portrait format compared to landscape. If in doubt, shoot both formats. When you’re home analysing your photos on the computer decide which looks best. For instance: lighthouses can be framed tightly in portrait format, or, framed in landscape with interesting surroundings. No. 5 – Less is more I believe the best travel photos are uncluttered and simple in composition. There’s a tendency amongst less experienced photographers to try and fit everything in, with the eventual image becoming a lot of tiny objects. I’ll share a method I use. At times, I’ll slowly walk around with the camera to my eye searching for a strong composition. Of course when doing this, take care of where you walk, otherwise you could end up on your backside or over a cliff. Commence planning your next journey with the intention to create attractive travel photographs. Research the places you intend to visit via the internet, newspapers, magazines and travel guidebooks. Sharpen your photographic eye before you leave by photographing in your local area or nearby region. Increase your chances of producing quality travel images by researching, preparing and skilfully executing. Happy travels. Hi All, / I have a HUGE Favour to ask you all, Please could you VOTE for my cause. I’m trying to get RB to consider opening up a sister site devoted to encouraging our younger generation, those younger than 16. which would be sub divided via groups into age groups, where kids can learn to critique each other without breaking each other down, discover what it means to be part of a community and have access to Mentors and other artists, from RB who can offer their knowledge and encouragement. They can also sell their cards, t-shirts, and calendars teaching them what it feels like to be an out there . The main Objective it to keep it separate from the Adult RB to prevent them seeing undue violence or nudity. I feel so strongly about this idea, I feel we can do so much good for these children. From an Adult who has benefitted so from being on RB for just ONE month. I have been a hermit for the last four years only leaving the house to do things I absolutely had to like go off to work, and do chores like grocery shopping… In one month of posting some of my drawings, photos, poems and journals, I’ve found a world where the real me inside is not shunned, or batted aside. Yes family and friends have said they liked my art, but they unfortunately don’t have a choice , hehe. I feel that had I been given this sort of encouragement as a child, (I’m not saying that I had a bad childhood), and not forcefully guided into what I do for a living now, that I would be a more confident person. What’s happened to me in the last month is nothing short of miraculous, I have an appointment with a college councillor next week to consider going back to school, to take up where I left off in my art and to take up a child care diploma. Please have a listen to Sir Ken Robinson talk on creativity in education, we have at our finger tips the opportunity to help those kids achieve their creative potential. / Please feel free to read my first post suggesting the idea Mentoring and Encouraging generations to come and my second post where I Suggestions for a Redbubble KID, Please Vote posted the suggestion on the Ideas and Suggestions page. / If you feel as I do that we can Help Change how the story goes, please click the link below and VOTE please the more of us who vote the better for all of us. It’s raining in Londontown, as you’d expect, but in the hearts of our five Music Machines winners I reckon the Sun is doing some sort of tango with a blue sky, a butterfly and possibly a squirrel. A final cheer for goaferboy, douglasbot, Greg Wade, rubyred and Naf4d whose shirts are all snugly displayed in Demo and being steadily rotated around window, door and rack. Good work peoples. Any Bubbler in the vicinity of Carnaby Street should get themselves down and check out the quality merchandise. Until next time my little cotton lovers.

Tone has journaled about Ken Duncan having a spray regarding the rules and regulations confronting photographers in Australia at the moment…as Ken states, there’d be much less tourism without the photographers…. This is a very interesting read….especially to those who are being accosted more and more by self righteous worriers who seem to think we’re all there to photograph their children, and paste them all over the internet….or dare to show off the beauty of our country…
