The jaguar is a near threatened species and its numbers are declining. Threats include habitat loss and fragmentation. While international trade in jaguars or their parts is prohibited, the cat is still regularly killed by humans, particularly in conflicts with ranchers and farmers in South America. Most have sharp claws on their feet, and all have long muscular tails. They have a very soft underfur which is protected by their outer layer of long guard hair. This traps a layer of air, and keeps them dry and warm under water. Most otters have fish as the primary item in their diet, supplemented by frogs, crayfish and crabs. Some are expert at opening shellfish, and others will take any available small mammals or birds. ..usually nocturnal, this mother and baby possum were setting the cockatoos off screeching one afternoon in the gum trees…I love catching a glimpse of the local nocturnal wildlife (which i usually only hear go bump in the night!!) This fall we drove up and through New England enjoying the fall foilage. One of our stops was Cape Cod where we went whale watching. It was a cold hour long trip till we spotted our first whale and wow what a sight it was.

Originally I thought this was an albino peacock…But have done some research and come up with this – “The White Peacock is frequently mistaken for an albino, but it is a colour variety of Indian Blue Peacock.” It was a very magestic bird and beautiful to see him fan his tail feathers. A white tail doe has been bringing her twins to the back yard lately. Yesterday (July 2/09) was the first time they stayed for any length of time. They were actually kind enough to let me wander back to the house, get the camera, change lenses and get back outside for a half dozen or so snaps.
