  • This is not a quiet place, but somehow incredibly tranquil. It sits atop Hong Kong park, next to a wondrous aviary. Tai Chi Garden is a large area with small portals and windows of differing shapes, strange rock structures and a memorial to a few of the medical staff who gave their lives to fight SARS. Towering bamboo helps the garden feel shaded from strong sunshine which gives a secluded feeling whatever time you happen there. Heavy in energy and ambiance the secluded feeling of the garden is in such stark contrast to the busy Hong Kong below that one reacts with calming emotions which in turn cause one to stop and meditate upon ones thoughts. It is an impulsive reaction that comes in much the same way as one would squint if a bright light were shone in ones eyes, or sharply pull ones hand away when unexpected touching something hot. Clearly creating such a place is strong in the Chinese heritage of Hong Kong. Knowing that someone created this place to evoke the feelings it does makes its power all the more seductive, as if there were some calming spell especially created for all such gardens. The changing portals that one wanders through give the feeling that one passes magically through all such gardens, although, perhaps one can only leave from the garden through which one entered, in many ways like a dream I suppose.

  • This shot was taken at dusk of the driftwood on Gillespies Beach, near Fox Glacier, New Zealand. Photoshop used to enhance the sky with a filter. It was taken in summer. This was taken with a Canon DSLR EOS 350D camera. Gillespies Beach is part of the Westland Tai Poutini National Park (established 1960) which extends from the highest peaks of Kā Tiritiri o te Moana/Southern Alps to the remote beaches of the wild West Coast. It is an area of magnificent primeval vistas; snow-capped mountains, glaciers, forests, tussock grasslands, coast, lakes, rivers and wetlands. This world-class scenic landscape has been recognised as such with World Heritage status. This image was featured in the Flotsam and Jetsam Group, 14 days ago.

  • Look at the close up because that’s the point! Thank you. I submit that this is right for the thick black outlines group because the entire point of the design is for the t-shirt to act as one very thick black line around an almost invisible design. Which is why, also, this is both simple and witty! Yes?

  • Walking to a view point of Fox Glacier, in New Zealand, we crossed this beautiful waterfall. It is times like these, that you don’t wish to be anywhere else. Further down, we had to cross this over slippery rocks and rushing water. It is a wonder I didn’t fall in. • It is good to be home and getting my chi on….............. T’ai chi is a Chinese exercise system that uses slow, smooth body movements to achieve a state of relaxation of both body and mind. Developed originally in China as a self-defense strategy, or martial art, t’ai chi—the “supreme ultimate fist”—is practiced in modern times primarily as a gentle exercise technique. Described as “meditation in motion,” t’ai chi consists of a standing person performing a series of postures or bodily movements in a slow and graceful manner, with each movement flowing without pause to the next. According to Chinese legend, the technique was created by a Taoist monk who was inspired as he watched a crane and a snake do battle. / Impressed by the snake’s ability to subtly and swiftly avoid the bird’s thrusts, he devised a series of self-defense techniques that do not involve meeting the opponent’s force with force, but rather stress evading the blow; causing the opponent’s own momentum to work against him. The five essential qualities of t’ai chi are: / Slowness. To develop awareness. / Lightness. To make movements flow. / Balance. To prevent body strain. / Calmness. To maintain continuity. / Clarity. To focus the mind.

  • Taiji (太极拳) (Also Known as Tai Chi) on the Bund in Shanghai’s Waitan area, with the sunrise over Pudong’s Lujiazui area. tai chi theory and practice evolved in agreement with many of the principles of Chinese philosophy including both Taoism and Confucianism. Tai chi training first and foremost involves learning solo routines, known as forms (套路 taolu). While the image of tai chi chuan in popular culture is typified by exceedingly slow movement, many tai chi styles (including the three most popular, Yang, Wu and Chen) have secondary forms of a faster pace. Some traditional schools of taiji teach partner exercises known as pushing hands, and martial applications of the postures of the form. Winner – EXPO 2010 Corporate Pavilion – Outside Eyes
