First Journal entry. Yesterday I received the first comment on my work. It was good to get a response. I contribute to one other site called Gather. It is much different from redbubble. i think the people on redbubble display in word and work their reverence for their work and the work of others and for their endeavotrs involving redbubble. I am not a writer at all. I tried writing on Gather just because it felt safe. That is the good thing about Gather. I also have a blogspot although I can’t see why. It serves no purpose for me. / They are probably good for people who have a lot of friends. I have some friends they just don’t have time for blog hopping. So that is it except I want to find out more about selling things like t-shirts, cards and wall art. / I can easily see myself buying a shirt or 2 because the artwork here is so dam good!! Thank you for stopping by and reading my rambling. / Ann M.

I just had my first image featured! An image I’m very proud of: “Neon American Flag with Silhouetted Family” taken during the 2002 Winter Olympics here in Salt Lake City, Utah, USA. I felt lucky to have things come together as they did to be able to get this shot. This whole family group just stood still, spontaneously ,for this fairly long exposure shot! No models or setup was involved. I’m grateful to have this image chosen to be featured, and thank you to the Night Photography group for doing so! This is a great artistic community and I’m so glad I stumbled upon it! Steve

I use a few common themes, motifs and symbols in my art that you may wonder about. Here’s my thoughts on some of these: The Cross / That should be pretty obvious. The empty Cross represents Christ crucified and resurrected, the message of the Christian Gospel, and the great price paid for my redemption. Horses / Probably my favourite animal – if I must have a favourite! Wild, free, strong, beautiful, graceful, loyal, powerful… These creatures evoke in me a sense of the wonder of creation and I love the harmony that can exist between horse and rider. Unfortunately, I don’t own any horses – they don’t fit in small suburban backyards – but in my teen years I attended a dressage riding school and demonstrated my lack of horseriding skills! :-( However, I loved handling horses. Most of my horse art is inspired by Egyptian Arabian Horses, but I also particularly like such breeds as the Thoroughbred, Australian Stock Horse, Akhal-Teke, and riding horses in general. Giraffes / Superb, graceful, almost comical. They usually represent an element of fun in my art. Cetaceans (Whales, Dolphins) / These usually point to the green consciousness in my art. They are immense, amazing animals, unrivalled in magnificence. In Australia they are under threat from whaling, and other forms of environmental degradation. Dinosaurs / Pterosaurs / I am drawn to the mysterious, and I am drawn to animals. Put them together and we have the extinct reptiles belonging to the Dinosauria and Pterosauria. I try to combine accuracy with cartoonish fun in my representations of these creatures, though as the theories regarding them change with lightning speed and surprising regularity, there’ll be no pleasing everyone with my dinosaur / pterosaur themed art! Dinosaurs = extinct group of land based reptiles generally divided into two categories based on the structure of their hips (Ornithischia and Saurischia), with upright legs. Pterosaurs = extinct group of winged reptiles that are often mistaken for dinosaurs but are classified separately. They can be loosely divided into groups based on the shape of their tails. Landscapes / I love the land, especially the rural southeastern mainland areas of Australia. This land was once covered in temperate rainforest, but sadly much has been destroyed through European-style farming practices. Seascapes / There is a lure to the sea. Freedom, beauty, mystery. Women / Daughters of Eve, made in the image of Creator God, in His likeness, and each one a walking, living, breathing work of art. I believe that genuine beauty is contained within every woman. I do Church based volunteer work amongst teenage and young adult women, seeking to help them find the enormous potential for making a positive impact on the world around them, and hoping to tear down some of the lies about beauty that the media forces on women. I have come from a background of feminist activism, and feel very strongly about seeing women given respect, worth and dignity. Much more of my art is available for viewing at my blog, The Amalgamation .

Some of you may have noticed that the DoAn Art logo recently changed. Over the last two years I have seen my art develop and evolve in a direction that was less rooted in Asian traditions as it used to be. Traditional Asian painting techniques will still be a big influence in my art, however, I wanted to open my work up to a more universal source, rather than be tied to one particular culture. I meditated for some time on what symbol would best represent my work and it wasn’t long before the spiral appeared in my mind’s eye. I immediately knew it was the right symbol for my logo. But it did take some teasing and study to get that image out of my mind and into the shape of a logo. I learned that the spiral is a powerful symbol, long held in high regard by nearly every culture on earth. The Romans and Greeks used spirals to decorate pottery and temple columns. The Celtic and Nordic people used the spiral to decorate jewelry, clothing, weaponry and many other objects. The megalithic peoples of Europe carved spirals into many of their stone structures. The Australian Aboriginals used coiled snakes to represent the spiral and Islamic art used the mathematical principals of the spiral. The spiral appears in nature. Geothe noted that many plants grew in a spiraling motion and that many seeds and flower petals formed spiral patterns. The spiral can also be found in the movement of the tides and winds as well as in the growth of shells and horns. Symbolically the spiral can represent the growing and waning influence of the sun as it moves through the cycle of the year. Or it can represent the cycles of life and the rhythm of coming and passing, such as in the seasons, or of life and death itself. By the curving path of the lines, the spiral links outside to inside, space and spacelessness, time and eternity, material and spirit. I have even used the spiral in my own artwork. If you look at my last painting The Honeybee, I centered the thorax of each bee over the path of a spiral. As a result of my meditation and study, I decided to develop a logo utilizing the symbol of the spiral. I also made two spirals emerging from a single source, perhaps they are merging into one, or maybe it is both simultaneously. I wanted a logo that symbolized how my art comes from a common source, a universal place that we all share. It is my hope that my art will connect me to other people, to nature, and to all that makes up the world we know and don’t know. I also believe that the spiral adequately represents the patron-artist relationship, where two people work together toward one goal, unifying their energies for a common purpose. Over time, I am sure my logo will continue to develop, but for now I believe this new design best represents my art and what I hope to achieve through it. I hope you enjoy the new design! Please take a moment to look for how the spiral informs and influences your own life! DoAn

The Sign of the Fish <>< What does it mean? / The fish symbol is the earliest of Christian symbols and was the most common representation of Jesus Christ from the second through the fourth centuries. Why is the fish meaningful to Christians? / The Bible relates a number of accounts where fish were a significant aspect of Jesus’ ministry. On one occasion (Matthew 14:19), Jesus served several thousand families with a meal of bread and fish. On another occasion (Matthew 4:19), Jesus called Peter and Andrew, saying, “Follow me and I will make you fishers of men.” Many early Christians were persecuted and forced to worship secretly. The fish symbol served as a secret form of communication. Often the persecuted Christians would scratch this symbol on the ground to identify themselves to fellow believers. Soon, Christians began to attach meaning to the word “fish” itself. The Greek letters for ichthus (meaning “fish”, pronounced “ICK-THOOS”) became an acronym: I=Jesus; X=Christ; O=God’s; Y=Son; E=Savior. / / Today, the person who displays the fish symbol has accepted the same New Testament teaching that these early Christians accepted: that Jesus Christ is their Lord and Savior. By a decision of faith, this person has entered into a personal relationship with God and knows the reality of God’s forgiveness. “That if you confess with your mouth, ‘Jesus is Lord’, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved” (Romans 10:9, NIV).

Happy New Year … It is truly amazing that sometimes I have these truly odd and rare occurrences where I can feel like the world is so new and full of everyday blessings. I wake up without a care in the world just so happy to be in my skin and breathing. I guess that is just a bit of amazing that I can actually wake up without a thought in my mind other than every little instance of life is some new and fascinating. Why do I do that? Then reality hits me and for that one moment only just a few seconds ago; I felt as if i were someone else, as if I were something else as, if I was completely washed clean of any facet of my life. Sigh, oh how I wish would like to be back there again. Truly having that moment of euphoric bliss. So, I have decided that since my life is not composed uncomplicated things. I am going to work at UN-complicating my life for 2009. Its not a resolution but, I think I need to make a “bucket list” not of things I truly want to do but, a list of things I truly want to change for the year and toss those bad habits into that symbolic “trash” bucket. I have a will but, will I be strong enough? So here is my 2009 “bucket list”. 1. Work on my outlet: Write something meaningful everyday / 2. Get into a good Grad. School by Summer / 3. Create a budget (financial stability) / 3a. stick to the budget ;-) / 4. From the budget contribute to my now invisible cushion / 5. Make a five year personal growth plan / 6. Create and maintain a daily workout schedule / 6a. 30 mins. a day dedicated physical health / 7. Drink Plenty of Water Everyday / 8. Allow myself to be heard. Well, hopefully as the years moves on I can try to get some of this stuff crossed off. I will try to make an attempt to record my progress as this year breezes. ~C.

symbolism – information provided by wikipedia:

Symbolism is the applied use of symbols: iconic representations that carry particular conventional meanings. The term "symbolism" is often limited to use in contrast to "representationalism"; defining the general directions of a linear spectrum - where in all symbolic concepts can be viewed in relation, and where changes in context may imply systemic changes to individual and collective definitions of symbols. "Symbolism" may refer to a way of choosing representative symbols in line with abstract rather than literal properties, allowing for the broader interpretation of a carried meaning than more literal concept-representations allow. A religion can be described as a language of concepts related to human spirituality. Symbolism hence is an important aspect of most religions. However, not all use it, but most do at some point in time.
