The painting “The Battle Between You And Me” refers to the tumultuous time I spent with my ex-husband in a rather difficult marriage. He is the creature on the left with the sword and shield looking like a warrior on the offensive. I am the creature on my back in a defenseless and prone position having the “life” sucked out of me by him. This is not a hopeless tale, however, as you can see the crown is still on my head (I am still the hero of my own myth) and also, the giant eye and bolt of lightening that symbolize my awakening into the consciousness of my situation and the realization that I must get out of the relationship and move on with my life. And, finally, in the top right of the painting is the mandala, the symbol of wholeness and the fruit or the flower of what evolves from the creative struggle for autonomy and independence… / / The Battle Between You And Me

Right, so I’ve submitted my Anorexic/Failed Ouroborus to the “symbolism in art group” and it wasn’t accepted.I generally don’t care about these things cause my works usually doesn’t fit in so it’s not much of a surprise to be turned down by one, but still. I mean this a group that accepts photoshopped pictures of horses and fairies and the ouroborus which is an ancient well established world wide reconized symbol doesn’t get in.How exactly does that work? Any ideas anyone?

October 28, 2008 The New Colossus Not like the brazen giant of Greek fame, / With conquering limbs astride from land to land; / Here at our sea-washed, sunset gates shall stand / A mighty woman with a torch, whose flame / Is the imprisoned lightning, and her name / Mother of Exiles. From her beacon-hand / Glows world-wide welcome; her mild eyes command / The air-bridged harbor that twin cities frame. / “Keep, ancient lands, your storied pomp!” cries she / With silent lips. “Give me your tired, your poor, / Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, / The wretched refuse of your teeming shore. / Send these, the homeless, tempest-tossed to me, / I lift my lamp beside the golden door!” Emma Lazarus, 1883

While visiting a friend last week, I happened to notice a very interesting work of art above his mantel – a painting that included the four Chinese characters for the seasons. It made me think of these 4 brass trivets that I had back at home that another friend of mine had given me several years ago. I was inspired to create this series of images, utilizing original photographs of those trivets, along with some Photoshop graphic design work… It has taken several days to complete, but I have finally finished… / What do you think? - R. It is a symbolic ritual through which dervishes (also called semazens) aim to reach the “perfect” (kemal). The aim is to abandon one’s nafs, egos or personal desires, by listening to God and the music (hence the term sema), thinking about God and whirling which has been compared to the orbiting of the planets in the Solar System around the sun. As explained by Sufis: In the symbolism of the Sema ritual, the semazen’s camel’s hair hat (sikke) represents the tombstone of the ego; his wide, white skirt represents the ego’s shroud. By removing his black cloak, he is spiritually reborn to the truth. At the beginning of the Sema, by holding his arms crosswise, the semazen appears to represent the number one, thus testifying to God’s unity. While whirling, his arms are open: his right arm is directed to the sky, ready to receive God’s beneficence; his left hand, upon which his eyes are fastened, is turned toward the earth. The semazen conveys God’s spiritual gift to those who are witnessing the Sema. Revolving from right to left around the heart, the semazen embraces all humanity with love. The human being has been created with love in order to love. Mevlâna Jalâluddîn Rumi says, “All loves are a bridge to Divine love. Yet, those who have not had a taste of it do not know!”

  • Pretty cool, eh? Click on the images to go to them, if you like: Thanks Art and Text group! Here is my new video, which managed to glitch and get all screwy many times, but which is still just good enough that I didn’t delete it and start over: The Quasi Making of Dream State I was going to do an explanatory bit of a voice-over to go with it, but, it got late and I was on the verge of frustration, so .. maybe, next time! I hope you enjoy it, anyway. For those who don’t know, which would pretty much be all of you, Dream State is the name of the digital painting as it was finished in the video. However, that picture no longer exists, due to the video going all fuzzy on me. I mean, it exists, but, it is low, low quality, indeed. So, I’m going to have to revamp, repaint, rebuild, and see where it gets me. I do not know if it will get me to the same basic place or no. Whatever comes out of it, will probably still be named Dream State, but, that’s a probability, not a certainty. Want to see the saved files from it? Do you? Okay, hold on and I’ll upload them to Facebook and add them on, here! Don’t forget to hum, because you are on hold and you need music! BRB …. ...... ... .. .. .. .... ...... ..... .... ...... ... .. .. .. .... ...... ..... .... ...... ... .. .. .. .... ...... ..... .... ...... ... .. .. .. .... ...... ..... . .. ....... .... ...... ... .. .. .. .... ...... ..... .... ...... ... .. .. .. .... ...... ..... / / Above is what is supposed to be a close up of the sign, banner, announcement, order, or etc., which says “Love the trap”. Unfortunately, it is too blurry to read, anymore. Following this paragraph is the grayscale version of Dream State that I saved, in the hopes of using it to layer and “sharpen” the recreation, once started. This, below, is a close up of “Awaken” from Dream State (which is what the chest plate, sign, or whatever you want to call it, says. I am not claiming that Awaken is, or is not, the name of the person, imaginary person, symbolic and anthropomorphic representation of fantasy, or whatever else you might call the bird looking beastie/thing/hallucination). / Below is as close to the finished Dream State as you are going to see (except for on video) for a while. Glad I have this much of it, anyway! / The intent, in starting out making the video, was to compile some of my various unfinished works into a wee video with a bit of a monologue about them. The intent changed, after I opened the first file and turned it into an AVI file. At that point, I decided – since the idea of people thinking of digital art as only photo manipulation was in my brain and intermingling with a discussion I had with another artist, via comments, about inspiration – to use that beginning piece and work it up into something, step by step. I had no idea what it would be, or why . Do you know why? Because, like with life, I start with what I have, more often than not, and simply go on and try to get to somewhere I like. The intent forms by action, the inspiration is generally moment to moment. I started out using Squizz and altering the thing (which was still colored at the time, even though per the video it looks like it was immediately changed to grayscale), and I used the same setting on Squizz three or four times, until a heart shape emerged. Then, I outlined it with a mask, and used Boss to define it. That’s when I saw the lady, her basic figure, her hand up as if she is both protecting herself from something and, yet, longing to reach for it. I also saw what might have been a demon face. As it turns out, the face was not a demon – we shall leave who and what the face is undefined, because it’s better that way. I didn’t see the other woman, until much, much later on in the work. And, she was a real piece of work, not just in her saucy, probably just got back from the bar stool attitude, but, in the sheer amount of time, set backs, restarts, etc. that occurred due to her. It was well worth it, though; especially as I was so afraid I would ruin the stripes that made up her dress, and helped point out the woman that was there. This is not a piece that is straight forward, I hope you know? This is not about a weird party with an alien bird man, or two women in bed together sharing a weird fantasy about an alien bird man and some other guy. Nor is it anything else that might be so easily explained. It’s just … well, figure it out for yourself. Obviously, those of you who know me, know that I was thinking of said lovely Scotsman from the heart onwards. Let that lend color to your interpretation, if you like. It’s been so long since I heard from him, and, again, the circumstances wherein we parted company, were strange and ill defined, and I am left alone, worrying for him, and full of vague and chaotic other concerns. To the Smithy most fair: I may attempt to explain what is going on in the video, sort of frame by frame, for Digital Interface – but, only if you will accept it without me knowing the settings. I mean, I really cannot tell you exactly how to recreate the piece, but, the video shows some of it, and I can explain some of it, so .. tell me what you think. And, then tell me if it would be accepted under Writing (as it won’t be under Journal, I know), or would I have to wait until I posted it as an actual art piece? Hmm .. maybe I will, anyway. That way, I could start from the beginning, with what I have already saved, and then, I could tell people how to do it! The End

The most common symbolic use of the skull is as a representation of death and mortality, but such a reading varies with changing cultural contexts. Our present society predominantly associates skulls with death and evil. Courtesy Wikipedia here Halloween (also spelled Hallowe’en) is a holiday celebrated on October 31. It has roots in the Celtic festival of Samhain and the Christian holy day of All Saints’ Day. It is largely a secular celebration, but some Christians and pagans have expressed strong feelings about its religious overtones. Irish immigrants carried versions of the tradition to North America during Ireland’s Great Famine of 1846. The day is often associated with the colors orange and black, and is strongly associated with symbols such as the jack-o’-lantern. Halloween activities include trick-or-treating, wearing costumes, ghost tours, bonfires, costume parties, visiting haunted attractions, carving jack-o’-lanterns, reading scary stories, and watching horror movies.

After I posted my Angel image, several people commented on it (both on- and offline), and then a friend pointed out that it’d be better if the flattened water bottle wasn’t lying there. Not until then did I realize that I liked that trash in the shot. It’s when we find ourselves among the mundane (parking lot) and ugly (trash) situations that the beauty and calming influence of angels is most apparent (and most needed?). How often, in my depth, have I been preserved as if covered by an angel’s wings. I choose to focus on the “angel” in this image.

Poppies have long been used as a symbol of both sleep and death: sleep because of the opium extracted from them, and death because of their (commonly) blood-red color. In Greco-Roman myths, poppies were used as offerings to the dead. Poppies are used as emblems on tombstones to symbolize eternal sleep. This aspect was used, fictionally, in The Wonderful Wizard of Oz to create magical poppy fields, dangerous because they caused those who passed through them to sleep forever. A second meaning for the depiction and use of poppies in Greco-Roman myths is the symbolism of the bright scarlet colour as signifying the promise of resurrection after death The poppy of wartime remembrance is Papaver rhoeas, the red flowered Corn poppy. This poppy is a common weed in Europe and is found in many locations, including Flanders Fields. Canadian surgeon and soldier, John McCrae wrote the poem In Flanders Fields on May 3, 1915, after witnessing the death of his friend, Lt. Alexis Helmer. The opening line of the poem vividly describes the image of the poppies blowing in the wind amongst the many crosses that mark the resting places of fallen soldiers. In 1915 US professor Moina Michael inspired by the poem published a poem of her own in response, called We Shall Keep the Faith. In tribute to the opening lines of McCrae’s poem - “In Flanders fields the poppies blow / Between the crosses row on row,” - Michael vowed to always wear a red poppy as a symbol of remembrance for those who served in the war. Thus the plant became a symbol for the dead World War I soldiers. In many Commonwealth countries, artificial, paper or plastic versions of this poppy are worn to commemorate the sacrifice of veterans and civilians in World War I and other wars, during the weeks preceding Remembrance Day on November 11. In the United States, it is common practice to wear “Buddy Poppies” (artificial, paper or plastic versions sold by the Veterans of Foreign War) during the weeks preceding Memorial Day, the last Monday in May to commemorate the sacrifice of veterans in the various wars; whereas Veterans Day on November 11 is used to honor “living” veterans. It has been adopted as a symbol by The Royal British Legion in their Poppy Appeal. In Canada, poppies are distributed by the Royal Canadian Legion and the Anavets organization each fall prior to Remembrance Day. The design of the Canadian poppy consists of petals made of red plastic with a felt lining and black centre held on by a pin. In 1980, the Royal Canadian Legion formed a committee to decide the future of the poppy and it was decided that the centre should be changed to green to represent the green fields of France. This proved unpopular with the Legion membership and the design was changed back in 1986. Unfortunately a large quantity of green felt had already been purchased and it was decided to keep producing the green centres until the supply of felt was exhausted. It took until 2002 for the green felt to run out and the traditional black centres reappeared. Those who were unaware or had forgotten that black centres had been used in the design of the poppy from its introduction in 1921 until 1980 found the change somewhat controversial. In New Zealand and Australia, plastic poppies are widely distributed by the Returned Services Association leading up to ANZAC day (April 25). The California poppy, Eschscholzia californica, is the state flower of California.

Witchcraft can refer to the use of such powers in order to inflict harm or damage upon members of a community or their property. Other uses of the term distinguish between bad witchcraft and good witchcraft, the latter involving the use of these powers to heal someone from bad witchcraft. The concept of witchcraft is normally treated as a cultural ideology, a means of explaining human misfortune by blaming it either on a supernatural entity or a known person in the community. Courtesy wikimpedia here Brooms have long been connected with witchcraft, almost universally portrayed as medieval-style round brooms and associated with female witches. Despite the association with women, in 1453, the first known case of claiming to have flown on a broomstick is recorded, confessed by the male witch Guillaume Edelin. There are, however, prior records of witches flying on sticks or similar objects, usually that had been first greased with a magical flying ointment. Anecdotally, the broom served another purpose during periods of persecution. Witches and other magic practitioners would disguise their wands as broom sticks to avoid suspicion. It is also a tradition that brooms have been used by some as receptacles to harbor temporarily a particular spirit. Today the broom is included in lists of ritual tools in many pagan guide books, where it is often referred to as a besom. A broom is sometimes laid at the opening of some covens’ rossets. Representing the Element of Air, brooms are utilized in the purification of areas. They are used to sweep ritual circles clean of negative energy. The high priestess or high priest walks clockwise, traces the cast circle and sweeps with the broom a few inches off the ground. This practice can be used in addition to or in place of incense to purify a ritual space. It is often employed by those allergic to incense, and during rituals practiced in smoke-free areas. It is also a technique associated with “kitchen witches” who use what’s on hand to work spells. As a tool of purification, decorative brooms are sometimes hung near doors to cleanse those entering a house.

symbolism – information provided by wikipedia:

Symbolism is the applied use of symbols: iconic representations that carry particular conventional meanings. The term "symbolism" is often limited to use in contrast to "representationalism"; defining the general directions of a linear spectrum - where in all symbolic concepts can be viewed in relation, and where changes in context may imply systemic changes to individual and collective definitions of symbols. "Symbolism" may refer to a way of choosing representative symbols in line with abstract rather than literal properties, allowing for the broader interpretation of a carried meaning than more literal concept-representations allow. A religion can be described as a language of concepts related to human spirituality. Symbolism hence is an important aspect of most religions. However, not all use it, but most do at some point in time.
