The painting is based on a photo I took on Dartmoor a few years ago. The light was fantastic and I’ve expanded on that to create this vibrant landscape.

Started in 2003, this painting got placed in the attic for 4 years while she pursued her career in graphic design. I competed this landscape in February 2008. Dragon Hill is the small hill located at the base of the Uffington White Horse Hill in the Vale of the White Horse.

I snapped the blossoms before they are blown away by the wind. Spring is always a time for renewal. A time to celebrate life. Nut had a special relationship with the sun and stars. She was thought to swallow the stars in the morning and give birth to the sun. During the day, the sun would travel across her body and in the evening, this would be swallowed as the stars issued forth from her womb. This image was likened to a sow swallowing and then giving birth to her piglets. In her form as a cow and as a woman she was often pictured with stars upon her body. You can choose from any of my images. / Courtesy Wikimedia here Sufi whirling (or Sufi spinning), (Arabic: رقص سماع) is a turning meditation that originated among Sufis, which is still practiced by the Dervishes of the Mevlevi order. It is a symbolic ritual through which dervishes (also called semazens) aim to reach the “perfect” (kemal). The aim is to abandon one’s nafs, egos or personal desires, by listening to God and the music (hence the term sema), thinking about God and whirling which has been compared to the orbiting of the planets in the Solar System around the sun. As explained by Sufis: In the symbolism of the Sema ritual, the semazen’s camel’s hair hat (sikke) represents the tombstone of the ego; his wide, white skirt represents the ego’s shroud. By removing his black cloak, he is spiritually reborn to the truth. At the beginning of the Sema, by holding his arms crosswise, the semazen appears to represent the number one, thus testifying to God’s unity. While whirling, his arms are open: his right arm is directed to the sky, ready to receive God’s beneficence; his left hand, upon which his eyes are fastened, is turned toward the earth. The semazen conveys God’s spiritual gift to those who are witnessing the Sema. Revolving from right to left around the heart, the semazen embraces all humanity with love. The human being has been created with love in order to love. Mevlâna Jalâluddîn Rumi says, “All loves are a bridge to Divine love. Yet, those who have not had a taste of it do not know!”

As it was in the time of WWII and as it is now. A layering of the old datum and ranges chart found painted on the concrete walls of the Gun emplacement that guarded the entrance to the Whangarei Harbour, and a group of friends peacefully fishing off the rocks at Mitimiti, Northland, New Zealand.
