Various fishes from the London Clays community of the Ypresian epoch. They all went extinct due to the total collapse of the marine ecosystem thanks to the introduction of the “kipper.” Top is Argillichthys toobsi, a close relative of the modern-day lancetfish (Alepisaurus). / Below it is a pair of Beerichthys ingens, a largely mysterious fish known only from six incomplete skulls. It is believed to be either a louvar, or a louvar-like fish. / The thin fish are snake mackerels, Progempylus edwardsi. / At the bottom is a swordfish, Xiphiorhynchus priscus

Inspired by Hemmingway’s book “The old man and the sea” I thought I would do my own version. This painting was done with the old school fishermen in mind who set out in small wooden boats with basic fishing gear or hand lines and caught large billfish and tuna. The original is 20” X 24”
