  • How many sales of this design – 1 sale so far :) / Pelican Love is from the ‘Beach Series’ and ‘Friends Series’ of original paintings by Karin Taylor. / It was created using ink and pastel on pastel paper. There is a beautiful story about the love that pelicans have for their babies, I thought I’d share it with you Reference taken from the Wikepedia Encyclopedia (please forgive the length of this, but it is SO interesting, thought I may as well share the whole thing !) In medieval Europe, the pelican was thought to be particularly attentive to her young, to the point of providing her own blood when no other food was available. As a result, the pelican became a symbol of the Passion of Jesus and of the Eucharist. It also became a symbol in bestiaries for self-sacrifice, and was used in heraldry (“a pelican in her piety” or “a pelican vulning (wounding) herself”). Another version of this is that the pelican used to kill its young and then resurrect them with its blood, this being analogous to the sacrifice of Jesus. Thus the symbol of the Irish Blood Transfusion Service (IBTS) is a pelican, and for most of its existence the headquarters of the service was located at Pelican House in Dublin, Ireland. For example, the emblems of both Corpus Christi College, Cambridge and Corpus Christi College, Oxford are pelicans, showing its use as a medieval Christian symbol (‘Corpus Christi’ means ‘body of Christ’). Likewise a folktale from India says that a pelican killed her young by rough treatment but was then so contrite that she resurrected them with her own blood.[1] These legends may have arisen because the pelican used to suffer from a disease that left a red mark on its chest[citation needed]. Alternatively it may be that pelicans look as if they are stabbing themselves as they often press their bill into their chest to fully empty their pouch. Yet other possibilities are that they often rest their bills on their breasts, and that the Dalmatian Pelican has a blood-red pouch in the early breeding season.[1]

  • I would like to dedicate this image to my husband Tommy. We have been sweethearts since we were in the eighth grade! Neither one of us dated anybody else all our lives. We will celebrate 38 years of marriage on July 3 of this year, 2009. I can’t think of a better friend, a more faithful companion, a more loving and devoted spouse than Tommy. I am blessed. Happy Valentine’s Day to my one and only Sweetheart! I think this pair of cardinals is a perfect symbol of our marriage as these wonderful little birds mate for life and are a beautiful symbol of fidelity.

  • When I returned home for a visit last year my nephew and one of my nieces were baking these glorious cupcakes and I took photos so that I could eventually draw them as they looked (and tasted!) so yummy. • This is all about dressing up in your finest fun clothes, mum’s pearls and kimonos, fur stoles etc. She is clutching her dolly under her arm :) / Maya is a mixed media painting recently completed. She has been altered quite a lot digitally as I was not happy with the actual original painting, I’ve taken this back to give this a vintage look. My little niece Maya is so beautiful, half Indonesian as is my other niece Indiana…gorgeous children both. After I finished this, it reminded me a bit of Maya, hence the title.

  • In 1268, Lord John Balliol died. His grieving widow, Lady Dervorgilla of Galloway, had his heart embalmed and placed in an ivory casket. She carried it with her everywhere. She undertook many charitable acts in his memory. These included the founding of the Cistercian abbey of Dulce Cor (Latin for ‘Sweet Heart’) in 1273. When she too died in 1289, she was laid to rest in front of the abbey church’s high altar, clutching her husband’s heart to her bosom. Sweetheart Abbey’s conception as a shrine to human and divine love is deeply appealing. So too is its attractive setting. The graceful ruin nestles between the grey bulk of Criffel and the shimmering waters of the Solway Firth, whilst its blood-red sandstone walls contrast with the lush green grass at their feet. Monks from Dundrennan Abbey., near Kirkcudbright, established the new monastery. It was the last Cistercian house to be founded in Scotland. Within seven years of Dervorgilla’s death, with the builders still working on the abbey church, the Wars of Independence with England erupted. Edward I of England himself resided at the abbey in 1300, whilst campaigning in Galloway. After 50 years of bloodshed, the monastery was in a bad state. The bishop of Galloway bemoaned Sweetheart’s ‘outstanding and notorious poverty’. To the rescue rode Archibald ‘the Grim’, Lord of Galloway and 3rd Earl of Black Douglas, who financed wholesale repairs and rebuilding. Thereafter, little is heard of Sweetheart until its demise following the Protestant Reformation in 1560. Information from Historic Scotland website. EOS 20D, 17-40mm (L)
