This one’s a little obscure outside Scandinavia. It’s a greeting for St. Lucia Day, which opens the Yuletide celebration in countries from the Netherlands to the Baltics. Traditionally, the eldest daughter of the family wakes early on December 13, dons a white dress with a red sash, and a wreath of lingonberry boughs and candles. She sings to wake the rest of the family, who then join her for a breakfast of buns and coffee. The candles refer to the fire which failed to consume Saint Lucy, and also offer a welcome glimpse of light in the middle of long, dark Scandinavian winters.

Oil on Canvas Board / Okay, lots of my love life coming up here. Frankly, I confess to enjoying this. / A painting of fantastic Swede NY city detective and me. Seems we were always tearing each other’s clothes off. I did this painting/sketch with about the same speed. / I’ll never forget his fabulous shoulders, but I’ll be damned if I can remember his name. / Cops, detectives, agents…all great lovers and lousy dates. They never show up on time, you can never get them on the phone, you have to feed them – they’ve never eaten a meal always hungry and don’t have the time for restaurants; they have a thousand women in every port, rarely stay for breakfast, sometimes show up with flowers, and they lie a lot. But there is some magic in watching a man get undressed, shirt, pants…and guns…that is just way cool. There’s an odd aloofness in these men that comes from doing dangerous work that can hurt, if it weren’t all so fascinating. A breed apart.

She is a beautiful Crested Swede Duck, a pet dearly loved by Jeremy and Jena, who I met near North Pole Alaska at Chena Lakes in 2007. They carry her on walks in a pet carrier, and when they are in a safe area away from dogs… they place her on the ground where she follows their sweet calls like a little puppy and swims in the lake! She is so darling! She isn’t Blue and she isn’t Black, she is brown, so I have been unable to locate any specific information on her breed. “As early as 1835, the Blue Swedish Duck was being raised by farmers in Pomerania, which back then was part of Sweden, thus the name. Swedish Ducks are one of the heartiest of all the breeds, with a calm disposition. They are active foragers. Their body type is very close to the Pekin duck with carriage being a little more upright. Adult weight is around 8 lbs for the drake and 7 lbs for the hen duck. Cockerels are males age 1 day to 12 months of age, cock is a male over 1 year old, stag is a male 5-11 months of age, pullets are females age 1 day to 12 months of age, hen is over 1 years old and straight run is a term for males and females mixed as they hatch and not separated.
