Sunrise at Carine Swamp – freezing cold winters morning.
I posted this image earlier and then got a request from one of my former students to create another version of the same picture, this one as a Cajun Christmas card. In her email to me, she wrote, “Yesterday, I found out I relapsed… A tumor that was dormant for two years awoke from its slumber… so back to the battle… and you know this Cajun is going to fight like a true Cajun!” I’m dedicating this card to Robyn and to her fighting spirit. I hope that everyone who views this card and reads this entry will pray for her to win this next round of her battle with cancer. Robyn is a gifted athlete who abounds with humor and the Cajun joie de vivre, joy of life! Please spread the word; united prayer is powerful. And a very Merry Cajun Christmas to you and yours!

Squirrel sneaking a drink from the murky swamp waters hanging upside down from a Bald Cypress tree on Bayou Desiard – Ouachita Parish Louisiana. This is one of my favorite shots and honestly one of my first paddling trips to Bayou DeSiard after returning to Louisiana. I had been away for about 15 years. This scene was less than 50 yards from the Public Boat Launch at Frenchman’s Bend. I have seen this behavior displayed many times since this shot, but oddly never noticed it before the day this image was captured. Late afternoon macro, Everglades swamp image. Florida. Nikon D 300.
Taken at Celestun in Mexico’s Yucatan peninsula these flamingos are feeding in amazing numbers in a tidal estuary flanked by mangrove forests… tho there used to be even more until some recent hurricanes dispersed some of the breeding groups to elsewhere… more details here Taken with a compact camera as I was not confident in taking my new dslr afloat on a boat trip yet! Pity tho – an opportunity well and truly missed! And here is a shot of a mangrove pool in the nearby forest /
A protective mama alligator with a baby on her head is signaling to NOT come any closer. Photographed from a kayak in a marsh area of the Everglades National Park’s Turner River near Everglades City, Florida, USA. Night time shot, taken in the backwaters of the River Murray, near Lyrup in the Riverland area of South Australia. Beautiful still night with mirror image reflections of the majestic dead river gums. BEST Viewed large. Canon 400D 18-55 lens. Processed in Photoshop CS3.
Late afternoon, Lyrup flats between Renmark and Berri in the Riverland of South Australia. Afternoon shots whilst waiting for the sun to go down for a night time shoot. The clouds moved apart and left this diamond like section reflecting nicely on the still backwaters. Again a visit to one of my favourite places where these huge River gums stand defiant against nature, dead but not finished….... Canon 400D 18-55 lens, CIR Polarising filter. Three shot panoramic stitch in CS3 and converted to B&W in the same program.

I hope you see something in this ….. / there is just something about seeing three different birds. in a swamp…....... in the damp moist muggy.. habitat…..... each surviving. each leaving for now to do each do their thing. The wingos the anhinga must be tried. and this ritual of the wings spreading takes sometimes a good ten to fifteen minutes.. The stork eats its food.. the egret is patiently waiting for its next food source. and then watch out. it will spear it with that amazing beak .. Egret, Stork and Anhinga Florida 6 mile Cypress park Fort Myers, Florida Sony DSC H 7 / darkened the shadows .. the black waters of florida are famous ..

While heading to my destination for a photo shoot I spotted a mangrove by the side of the road. A boat happened to pass by while I was there, sending great ripples through the mangrove. Swansea Channel in Lake Macquarie, New South Wales.
Going through some old folders this week and found another image from some time ago when walking in areas way off the River Murray main area. This is where salt has taken over old swamp lands. This area has been in this poor condition for a long time and was nothing to do with current water levels. The stormy clouds on the day threw great colours from the salt. Taken between Renmark and Berri in South Australia. Canon 400D with CIR Polariser on 18-55 kit lens.
