This was taken in 2003….This was taken with my minolta on film In my grandmothers garden…She asked me to take some pictures of some of her flowers..and this is the picture that I gave her…..She was pleasantly suprised to hsee her garden visitor as well.. To this day this has remained one of my favorite picturesm as well as a top seller… This is also a tiger-striped swallowtail butterfly…

Found this Swallowtail Caterpillar starting to prepare its chrysalis on a leaf on a tree in our garden … it had just started to spin its threads and was suspended above the leaf .. The sexes are usually similar. Male Swallotails in the genus Papillio have shiny scent scales on the submarginal area of the forewing. Graphium have scented hairs that are concealed in the anal fold of the hind wing. These are revealed during mating. / CITRUS SWALLOWTAIL: / Wingspan female 100-120mm / Wingspan male 110/130mm / DISTRIBUTION: Common and widespread throughout South Africa, particularly in wooded areas and gardens; absent from extremely arid areas. / HABITAT: Forest edges, parks and gardens, hill tops, flatlands. / FLIGHT PERIOD: Continous broods year-round, mainly Sept-May. / LARVAL FOOD: Cultivated Citrus spp; (considered a pest) and several other plant species.
CAPTURED THIS BEAUTIFULL BLACK SWALLOWTAIL BUTTERFLY WHILE I WAS PHOTOGRAPHING EAGLES. HE FLEW DOWN RIGHT IN FRONT OF ME ON A FLOWER TEN FEET INFRONT OF ME. I COULD NOT RESIST THE PHOTO . CAPTURED IT WITH MY CANON XSI SETTINGS WERE 1/500 at F 8 ISO WAS 200. MY LENSE WAS MY TAMRON 200 TO 500 WITH A 2 X EXTENDER MANUAL FOCUS
