A new approach for me – Thought I would try some fantasy matte work. / / This is a collaboration effort where Susan Davies provided the base image of Castell Coch and Rose Moxon kindly created the 3D dragons that I used in this composition. Thank you both – I couldn’t have created this without you guys. / I am quite pleased with the result I reached here – and I hope you enjoy it as much as I did creating it. / / I have prepared a step by step guide to how I got this effect, and you can read it here / /

A Susan Epps Oliver original 2008. All rights reserved This work was derived from basically a happy snap taken whilst out walking on Skyline Drive in Virginia. The night I worked on it was stormy and kind of eerie so I decided to imagine how the bridge might have looked on that night. I used the fractalius filter ( Photoshop plug-in ) to give the stringiness to the foliage and then played with many variations in brightness/contrast, colour etc until I arrived at the effect I wanted. It was about 3 hours work which included cloning out stuff which I thought made the image look cluttered. I love doing portraitures. This was my first time I did an oil painting and I thought it came out well. It took me 2 weeks to do this as I had to allow for drying time. / I normally do pencil, acrylic and pastel portraitures, but felt that the oils were very satisfying as it allows for retouching and revisiting the subject Oils on Canvas

“Three Susans”, is a testament to the beauty of autumn’s, Black-eyed Susans. It seems the blooms never really decide whether to be yellow, or orange. But in the end it doesn’t matter… they are gorgeous. Three Susans, is done on watercolor paper. The basic color scheme is painted in with watercolor and markers, the finishing is done with color pencil. I used many shades of purple for the background that lends the piece a startling, yet strangely subtle contrast. Meet Chula…Means little or pretty little girl…she came onto our desert property two weeks ago. She was starved, delirious and close to death. Still a puppy, maybe eight or nine months old…she stumbled up to my husband, all fear burned away long ago by starvation and just laid down and began a long mournful cry. / Naturally he called me, I went out and it was so sad that I got tears in my eyes. / We live out in the desert and we see strays now and then or dogs that may live close by and are just on scent…but over the last several months we are starting to see our desert community become a dumping ground for animals (mostly dogs). As the belts tighten and people can’t afford to feed themselves let alone an animal, guess who loses? / Anyway, I fed her and she slept for five hours…woke up, eyes had cleared some, I fed her a bit more and she slept for three more hours. Finally woke up and that was two weeks ago. / I guess Chula is now part of our family, much to the distain of our three other SPOILED RESCUE DOGS…they seem to forget that they too were once in Chula’s place! / Well we have room and it is a “kill center” in the nearest town shelter…it they are not adopted out in 72 hours the shelter puts down the animals…I just could not do that to this dog… / So far I have lost two patio pillows, one tennis shoe and she insists on doing her business in my flower beds, but that is okay…I have taken responsibility for every animal that I found or found me…they have no choice. / Since she came to us I have counted seven more stray wandering dogs and a black cat lived in the garage for a few days and moved on…and now I hear rumors that people are turning out their horses in the area because they can’t feed them. / Please donate to a local shelter…go to the store and buy a big bag of dog food or cat food to help feed the overflowing numbers of abandonded animals…or find a little more space in your heart for an animal that has no choice.
