  • As a water god, Hapi was a deity of fertility – he provided water, food and the yearly inundation of the Nile. He was also known as ‘Lord of the Fishes and Birds of the Marshes,’ indicating that he provided these creatures to the Egyptians along with the Nile itself. Without Hapi, Egypt would have died, and so he was sometimes revered even above Ra, the sun god. The depiction of Hapi himself, though, was that of a rather well-fed, blue or green man with the false beard of the pharaoh on his chin. Other than showing his status as a god of fertility by his color, the Egyptians showed Hapi as having rather large breasts, like those of a mother with a baby Hapi was worshipped throughout Egypt Acrylics & pigment on paper.

  • / / Ghost of Pain is a self-portrait taken from photographic artist Jaeda DeWalt’s 44 rooms series and is a part of the DeWalt Gallery collection. / —-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—- / Available for sale as Laminated Prints, Cards, Matted Prints, Posters, Mounted Prints, Canvas Prints and Framed Prints / / —-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—- / Ghost of Pain I often wonder, my precious child / if you will ever forgive me, / for sending you back to heaven prematurely. / Will we meet again… / when I have left this mortal existence / and slipped into your realm? You entered my body through a violent act. / Your mere presence inside me; / a daily reminder of that horrific night. / That evil man took away my sanctuary. Not only did he steal my body, / he stole my virtue, my heart and soul. / It has been up to me to piece back together, / the human wreckage he left behind. / I have restructured my identity / and emerged a renewed young woman, / yet my heart is still drawn to your unborn cries. I now know I can handle any challenge life may give me. / Now it is my hope that God can forgive me, / for sending you back to heaven, / before you even had a chance / to experience mortal existence. / Bless you sweet, innocent, child of mine. listen to Jaeda recite Ghost of Pain / —-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—- / About this image: / The ghostly version of me was a fluke. I lit myself using just a blue party light-bulb, positioned closely to me by laying one of my lamps on its side. I was wearing a velvet burgundy dress and had my hair pulled back. The lack of adequate light produced this strangely ghostly/alien image of me. The staircase . . . i went to an old community building where artists lived and could take art lessons in Seattle, WA. There had been a fire and the place was in a state of repair. Lots of cool, gutted out rooms, abandoned spaces. I snuck in, flirted my way past the construction workers and got some great pictures. This one is a close-up of one of the staircases. / —-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—- / browse Jaeda’s photographic art by category: / dreamscapes, artistic nudes, couples, glamour, erotica, conceptual, sensual, portrait, spiritual, survivor art / /

  • With destruction in one form or another all around this world, in wars with weapons not always that visible and obvious, refugees, asylum seekers, small communties the couple or individual have an enormous will and manage to survive, sometimes against all odds. Survival The bombs have stopped / the streets are quiet / dead civilians and soldiers lay strewn in the streets / all is blurred in this eerie light Parts of house still remain / in the ruins we carry on our life / although our minds are rather frayed / thankful to be alive despite the strife / To our god we prayed / please let us live yet aday Here we are the at an end / an end to the shooting, rape, bombing and lies / on the slow road to normality / slowly we mend / We have survived! Original poem Paul Stephen Dixon

  • Across the sea at which it stares / Brings fading hope for polar bears / Ice habitat that once was theirs / Is now destroyed by all our wares / / Ice home where polar bears roamed free / Melt quickly now into the sea / Despite their size and majesty / Their home now they are forced to flee / / Once great white kings of white empire / Move now they must, despite desire / The dangers real, the dangers dire / To stay means that they’ll soon expire What have we done to these poor souls / Filled air with gas and ozone holes / Exploited earth without controls / In our pursuit of selfish goals / / The polar bear’s last legacy / Will rise up from the future sea / To swallow shores that we must flee / Our own homes now… floating debris / / This mixed media artwork was inspired by a documentary on the PBS ‘Nature’ series about how polar bears and grizzly bears may soon be headed for a showdown over habitat. As global warming continues, grizzly bears are migrating northward trying remain in the climate they are accustomed to. At the same time, polar bears are being forced to make forays inland, away from the arctic shoreline, in an effort to supplement the food sources they normally rely on. Polar bears normally depend on sea-ice to hunt for their primary diet of seals. / / The sea ice is freezing later and thawing sooner each year at an alarming rate. If polar bears are unable to adjust and adapt to foraging on land for their food, they may very well be extinct within two or three generations. / / It has already been determined with scientific certainty, that it will take over a thousand years to reverse the damage we have done to the atmosphere with our man-made greenhouse gases from our industrial pursuits… and that is only if we stopped producing all these gases today. The arctic ice sheet will be non-existent in as little as ten years, and it WILL be non-existent, as that damage is irreversible at this point no matter what efforts we take today to curtail it. It is already too late to save the polar bears natural habitat. / / This artwork serves as a reminder to us all of the destruction we have caused, and continue to cause, to the other inhabitants of our planet that have just as much a right to life here as we do… if not more. Each time you make an unnecessary trip in your car, or leave a light on in a room where you are not, may ultimately be the difference between another species either surviving or becoming extinct. Remember the ‘butterfly effect’ in every action you take during every moment you take it! / / Anyway… I apologize if this seems like a rant, but it really makes me angry!! I have loved and respected the polar bear since I was very young. This beautiful animal, huge and powerful, and capable of enduring in the most extreme conditions on the planet… and now the only thing that my grandchildren may know of them is from an old picture of what we once had. / / The last of the sea ice in the artwork is a fractal I created in Incendia. The ‘north pole’, background gradient, sun, and foreground sea were all created individually in Photoshop. The image of the polar bear mother and her cub are from a public domain image from the US Fish & Wildlife Service. I have included a link to this image below. / / Polar Bear with Cub – US Fish & Wildlife Service / http://images.fws.gov/default.cfm?fuseaction=records.display&CFID=1672837&CFTOKEN=51517135&id=CB065014-1143-3066-400D4EF727A18D95 The artwork elements were then layered together in Photoshop. The original is 3600×6000 pixels at 300 pixels per inch. Because the original is so large and difficult to see over the internet, I have included a couple of detail cutaways below. / / / / / / /

  • The Crested Black Macaque, Sulawesi Crested Macaque, or the Black “Ape”, is an Old World monkey that lives in the northeast of the Indonesian island of Sulawesi (Celebes) as well as on smaller neighboring islands. The Celebes Crested Macaque is frugivorous, with 70% of its diet consisting of fruits. It also consumes leaves, buds, seeds, fungus, birds and bird eggs, insects (such as caterpillars), and the occasional small lizard or frog. Because it devastates crops and fields, the Celebes Crested Macaque is hunted as a pest. It is also hunted to provide bushmeat. Clearing the rain forests further threatens its survival. Endangered group.

  • This is a pin I designed for a dear friend of mine. Two Ribbons intertwined to form a heart. Tami and I went through our treatment todether and it stands for the strength, courage, and hope she gave me. It stands for the support help and care from family, friends, doctors and all caregivers. For with thier help we can “Survive Together”. I am getting ready to celebrate 6 years. Tami passed in 2005 just before the pin was produced. Just before she passed, I promised her she would make the pin happen and give her the first prototype and first pin. I made the prototype from bakable clay and she passed the day after. From that day I have dedicated my spare time and all proceeds from ALL of my art to help wipe out this terrible disease. I had the pin design copyright protected in 2005 and I would love to see it everywhere to honor survivors and thier caregivers. At her funeral I gave her husband and children the prototype and he asked me to pin it on Tami, to keep my promise. He told me she couldn’t wait to see it. I was touched that he asked me to do this. I know she would have loved it. After the pin was produced, I gave him and Tami’s mom the very first pins. Copyright 2005 / / Proceeds from pin sales go to the American Cancer Society, Breast cancer research. / Pins can be purchased for $10+ shipping, by e-mailing me at srksparks@bellcouth.net. / Pin has been produced in the colors representing different cancers. In Honor of Tami Lee. / And all who have fought and are now in Gods arms. /

  • One of the earliest, and most liked, vampire pieces I have done. Watercolor. For the ‘best black and white watermedia’ challenge: This is one of the first pieces I did for the White Wolf role playing game book, “Vampire the Masquerade,” and remains one of the best ones. The reasons I think it works are 1) The subject is up front, high contrast, and off a bit to the side. I think I was working with the rule of thirds without even knowing it, since I didn’t know it back then. I think the church in the background has the requisite atmosphere, and for the most part, is not fighting with the foreground in value shifts. I will be honest…I knew very little of these formal ideas when I did this piece. I am self taught and until recently, had no idea what the rule of thirds was, the golden section, or even atmospheric perspective…but I think I used these ideas intuitively (but not as well as I would now).

  • This is my cat called King. He is one who showed up at my place here in Amherst, Virginia one day and just stayed. He really is like the King of Beasts….the Lion. Here he is bringing in his catch. He brought it over to his “full” bowl of food behind the shed and placed it on top of the kibbles. I guess he wanted a warm meal since we had all of this snow. He is such a wild boy! But he really can be sweet and friendly too. I guess while he was out in the wild, he had to learn to hunt to survive. / Taken with my Canon Powershot SX110 IS FEATURED IN DOWN ON THE FARM / /
