Again the old General Hospital… / / It was built in 1897 and was home to Newfoundlands first operating room. The hospital has been closed and condemed for many many years now. Rumor has it that many dark and hideous things were done behind its doors, things that are better left forgotten… Only memories are left now that can haunt its dark and terrifying hallways. / / Cinderellas wicked step sisters would be in their glory having her scrub these floors. /

The Redbubble member who nominated my work is Rocketchook and this is what the had to say about this image: “The message is so powerful in this picture , let alone the skills and creativity involved in actually producing it . Stunning , jaw dropping art.” Nominated into the group Pay It Forward. Every day men and women are having cosmetic / surgery to appear as if they were on the red carpet / in Hollywood. They want to feel and look “perfect”, / there is no such thing, the word shouldn’t even / exist! To be “perfect” is a flaw in it’s self. Further / information and statistics can be read here: 2007 Surgical Highlights I didn’t want to take the smaller / version of Stitched Smile down / after it had so many views, favs / and comments. This one will be / here to enable prints.

Self Portrait Taken on a Back Alley Atelier expedition to an unused mental health facility in rural Victoria. This particular image was taken on the floor of the morgue which was icy cold and sterile and unlike the rest of the facility, kept clean and relatively dust free. www.joobrien.com.au

A U.S. soldier shows off a scar from the surgery required to remove multiple pieces of ammunition shrapnel sustained when his squad came under direct enemy fire while on patrol in Mosul, Iraq. As of October 2007 over 27,000 U.S. military personnel have been wounded in Iraq since the beginning of the war in March of 2003.

People are sliced and diced every day for cosmetic/plastic / surgery just because they think they are unattractive and / they aren’t what is in the magazine. Everyone feels inferior to / some one on the physical aspect. It’s ‘redonkulous’ but it’s a / fact of life. People who don’t need corrective surgery are allow / to get it to enhance their ‘self-esteem’.

Another in my series of the Old General Hospital. This is of the interior hallway leading into the bowels of the sinister and dark sanitorium. I didn’ t have a flashlight becasue this was spur of the moment. So I had to use my camera flash to illuminate the long dark hallways that have many rooms and other halls leading from this main corridor. I crept along hugging the wall working my way deeper into the dungeon like structure. My imagination was going wild as I visualized the scenes of countless horror movies and their macabre scenes. I could almost feel the horror of its previous occupants as the darkness enveloped me; yet I dared go a little further just to get that picture of what lay beyond… / / Visit my website On The Rock Photography /

A friend of mine blew-out her knee and had to get surgery on it. She is very into sports and not very girly…kind of like me. I couldn’t leave her in her tutu…........ / . / SO…....I took a ballerina Barbie, put her in some of Ken’s clothes, cut her waist length hair (my friend’s hair is short), cut her leg with a xacto blade and stitched up the cut with a needle and thread and made her a crutch out of a chopstick (from rb tee) and rubber for the armpit padding. / . / I am going to send it to her with one of my Goldfish Funeral cards. I’m going to write…Things could always be worse! / . /

When I was 18 I has open heart surgery to correct a condition called W.P.W. / Wolff Parkinson White. An extra nerve that caused problems with my heart valve. Although my W.P.W is now gone while they were digging through my chest they discovered that I also had a Bicuspid Aortic Valve. My aortic valve has two chambers instead of three like normal valves. Thus far this screwy valve has not caused any problems. To date they replace these with pig valves but only last for a few years. / My scar is 81/2 inches long and has healed nicely through the years. It sometimes serves as an interesting topic of conversation. I find people staring at it suprised that somebody my age would have such a scar. Me, being the verbally bold person I can be, usually say, “Go ahead and ask!” it usually breaks the ice. / Anyway, if you’ve made it this far…...I always wanted to take a picture of it because in a weird way I’m proud of it. It ’s the product of a new life given to me. / Thanks for looking and have a great day! A dentist’s chair in a rapidly decaying and collapsing surgery at an abandoned mental asylum. The wooden beams you can see eminating from the left of frame are the door and the ceiling, both of which are falling due to rot from a missing roof in this room.

The look of dedication. (despite using portable light to conduct surgery) / I recently went to Goma, DR Congo, as a volunteer. I was visiting a local hospital called Heal Africa. I met some wonderful, dedicated and inspiring people who so want to make their country and their people better. This is a centre for training. Training the few local doctors and nurses so they can be proficient enough to go back to their villages to serve their people. This lady, was a doctor from a little town in congo, to train in Heal Africa.

During History of at 2004. I painted this for a project titled, ‘beauty’. WE had to refer to a famous painting to make a statement about the title. I chose ‘Bather of Valpincon’ by Ingres, Jean-Auguste-Dominique. / When the painting was done, it was an age of different thinking to today in which if you could afford to eat, it was fashionable to show it by looking more voluptuous. Whereas, today, if you have the money, its fashionable to get plastic surgery to fit today’s icons of beauty, Barbie, celebrities, etc.
