What a wonderful surprise awaited for me when I logged in this morning, three of my images were sold, all sharing the same location and theme, but the unique thing about this sale, is that the buyer bought 10 from one image and 2 of each of the other ones. / This image depicting an HDR composition of Avila Beach harbor and piers at dusk had an order of 10 units. / / The following images were purchased two a piece. Australia’s oldest surfing Magazine “Surfing World” has publised 3 of my shots in its current Issue (#290) alongside and interview of World Kneelo Legend “Simon Farrer” These images below are two of the ones published, both these where on a full page spread.. The third shot, was a mug shot of Simon. Which is not on redbubble…. The 2009 Rip Curl Women’s Pro was held over the Easter Weekend at Bells Beach. Saturday morning was cold, plenty of sea spray to coat my lens with, (I didn’t have a cleaning cloth), but the waves were okay, not huge, but good enough for a contest. I posted this yesterday, something I had played with a couple of days earlier, because I’m constantly inspired by the amazing work around me, here on the bub. / Matt Penfold mentioned he’d been tinkering with a screen dump of it, so we had a bit of a chat, and I have sent him the jpg. The quality of the images out of the 5D have constantly blown me away, going from the 20D as I had….and the 5D Mk II is another step up again! Meanwhile, I have been playing with it again…. / in warm tones / in cool cross processing tones / Pretty much as is from the camera, with a bit of lightening in the rocks area And not one of these look anything like the one Matt sent me….LOL! There are so many ways to interpret an image…..

I went down to Winkipop (near Bell’s Beach) yesterday because I heard about a whale sighting. No whales but massive surf. I just kept shooting away as each set of massive waves rolled in. My image “Some Days are Diamonds” has generated a great response, including a few comments as I’ve seen on other images wondering how I created them so I figured I ‘d put together a journal about capturing images from the water! First of let’s have a look at the tools of the trade; I use a Canon G9 Powershot, not the flashest camera but it does the trick in the water. It lacks a bit of speed it is just over a second or so between pushing the button and the image being taken. It has been great for my photography, I get one shot per wave, no holding down the button and picking the best image later, timing is everything! I house the little machine in a Canon Water Housing attached to my wrist with an arm strap and my trusty pair of fins! Next getting out can be a bit of a challenge cause these big things often lurk just below the surface and they are really hard if you misjudge and get pounded onto then, fortunately I have avoided this so far! Once I’m out there I rely very heavily on the trusty fins to ensure that can get under waves, battle the currents and of course get out the way of surfboard quickly. I’ve only had a couple of close calls where I’ve lost these going under a wave, makes for a long swim in! Fitness plays a big part and you need to know you limits, the ocean commands respect and must be given respect in return. I don’t go out on days like this (although i would like to get fitter and give it a go!) I spend most of my time chasing this little man around out there helping him surf so we I manage to get wet most mornings of the week. This is Josh! Going under waves is always fun and creates some cool images, I love the way the air bubbles catch the light! Now there are a few hazards out there and you need to watch out for fins – they bite! However getting in nice and close does have its advantages, you can get some really great images! Now I hope that nothing with fins ever looks at me like this, although there was one day when I had a scare but I try not to think about that! At the end of day its a wonderful world out there and you can capture some fantastic images! Thanks for looking and I hope to bring you a whole heap more! Cheers, / Paul
